I’m currently catching up on The Bear (I know, I’m very late lol) and even though Ayo Edebiri is great and nomination worthy, the supporting actress who I think is the best and would make a great supporting nominee is Liza Colón-Zayas. Her performance is so subtle/funny/heartbreaking – often all at the same time – and achieved with a screen time and narrative arc much more limited than most of the cast.

ReplyMay 31, 2023 at 12:22 am #1205446151But the last 2 winners(EEAAO and CODA) are Feel Good Movies so I think they want Feel Good Movies right now
I don’t think two wins is enough to consider as a trend though

Nomadland, Parasite, Spotlight and more recent Best Picture winners are not feel good movies… A lot of the “trends” pointed out on here are accidental and not unimpeachable, especially with an Academy makeup clearly willing to make unprecedented decisions which overanalyses would deem impossible with the nomination of Andrea Riseborough and CODA’s ability to win Best Picture.

ReplyMay 20, 2023 at 7:16 pm #1205435909I think she’s almost certainly Supporting; in his IndieWire review David Ehrlich opines that her character is never afforded the time she deserves and goes on to state that “by the time Mollie re-emerges into the spotlight a few hours later, still the movie’s richest character, it’s too late to plumb the full complexity of her feelings….” It appears she may be largely offscreen for close to two hours.
Hadn’t seen that review since people were saying it had spoilers… Her category feels more confused than it was pre-reviews so I wish someone who saw the film could just provide a clear estimation of her category lol
ReplyMay 20, 2023 at 7:14 pm #1205435903My guess is she’ll campaign for Lead. And I hope she does. This cast and crew is like a dream.
The reviews are making it sound like she should be lead… but I worry that, since she obviously isn’t the primary lead, that she may be sidelined into supporting.
ReplyMay 20, 2023 at 6:58 pm #1205435874I was definitely not expecting this movie to be “campy” and “hilarious.”
Not that it needed selling for me, but this tweet got me even more hyped for the campiness lol
I knew MAY DECEMBER would rule in the first 5 minutes when Haynes zooms in on Julianne Moore, plays a dramatic music cue, and then she announces, “I don’t think we have enough hot dogs”
