April 24, 2023 at 5:37 am #1205408352A factor you need to consider with The Diplomat is that this is THE Keri Russell. In her first major TV role since her historic performance in The Americans. The show is performing very well in these first few days since release, and critics like it a lot more than we initially expected. It may be stan goggles, but I have her in comfortably unless I see an indication of the field becoming a lot more competitive.

April 22, 2023 at 5:48 am #1205406827I am definitely curious to see how this affects Yeun and Wong. Because it could really knock them or do nothing at all. Sadly, I would not be surprised if Wong is the one who takes the hit because society always expects higher moral standards of women than men. Plus she was more vulnerable in the first place as the less known of the two. Hope I’m wrong.
I swear if this happens I’m gonna be mad – she is so brilliant in the show. By most accounts, Yeun is the one who is actually friends with Choe outside of the show. The statement was awful and a PR nightmare for all involved, but I hope people have the same energy for all parties – and of course the numerous problematic contenders from other shows. It would be so Hollywood for Wong to miss and someone like F. Murray Abraham to still get in 💀

April 10, 2023 at 5:10 am #1205384218I will always insist that Better Call Saul was never as good again as in season 3. Just incredible stuff there that they never were able to match after. This episode absolutely the highlight of that.
Agreed. Season 3 is its peak, and McKean gives the best performance on the show (sorry Seehorn stans).

April 10, 2023 at 4:45 am #1205384194Don’t let Breaking Bad stans see this
Chile 💀 incoming mass downvotes from them. The way they mobilised to take away Hannibal’s 10 for the S2 finale.

March 27, 2023 at 4:40 pm #1205366264My favorite line was either Roman’s “you can pop it back in your mouth now Kerry”
Yeh Shiv’s slick shade at the start of Roman’s phone call with Kerry, then he had to one-up her and throw a whole solar eclipse with this line 💀 another great scene.

March 26, 2023 at 6:38 pm #1205364910I need to watch this, does eisenberg return to form, he feels like he has just been dealing it in over the past few years
He’s convincing in the role and the character is written really well, but none of the material falls outside of Eisenberg’s comfort zone (unless the finale changes things). Of the three ‘leads’ of the show, I find him the weakest, but still good.

March 25, 2023 at 4:15 pm #1205363772Finished Andor and it’s currently my Series winner 💀 I wasn’t expecting this level of writing at all – I was just catching on shows I hadn’t watched due to film season taking up my time.
Its difficult to expand on what has already been said by its fans (a journalist I follow describes it as “an incredible show about revolutionary struggle, imperialist extraction, and the transformative power of solidarity”), but I’d like to add that I’m doing this, the show impressively subverts the current television landscape. A lot of the shows and films critiquing contemporary power structures (usually by examining the banality of rich people – see Succession, The White Lotus, The Menu, Triangle of Sadness – to name a few) fail to truly articulate the root causes of the issues we currently face as a collective. I’m not saying that Andor is identically tackling the same themes as the examples listed, but it’s refreshing to see the dismantling of societal power structures reflected on screen in such a universal and entertaining way. This is vital television, and who knew Star Wars would be its vehicle.
O’Reilly, Shaw, Serkis and Skarsgard all deserve nominations, but the quality of performances given by almost the entire cast is high (Lesser is fantastic in a small role well within his wheelhouse). While I don’t think his work warrants a nomination, Luna is a compelling lead. It of course deserves Writing and Directing nominations. Looking forward to seeing what Succession brings now.
