I won’t mind her likely Emmy win because she’s overdue and should already have received recognition for other pieces of her filmography but there are around 5 other performances eligible in that category that are more deserving of the win.
Make that 10.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 16, 2021 at 11:07 am #1204204049First celeb death in quite sometime that I’ve been completely blindsided by. Felt like she hadn’t even peaked yet. What an actor.
She definitely hadn’t peaked. She was capable of Emmy/Oscar winning performances and I was really hoping she got the right role to break through at that level (as Manville did for Another Year and then Phantom Thread).

She was the best in cast and only had the final episode.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 16, 2021 at 9:09 am #1204203738This is unrelated but I just read that Helen McCrory has passed away. I’m in complete shock. She was so talented and shone in every role she played, and was definitely under-recognised by the industry. I’m sure she will be included in the BAFTA in memoriam (and probably the Emmys too).

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 16, 2021 at 4:34 am #1204203430No, when Moonlight won, Spike Lee said that it happened because of #oscarsowhite. Now, it seems like Emmy doesn’t really have the same issue, but it may happen since this series’ topic is mainly related to slavery and slaves’ struggle.
That being said, I don’t think the people’s reaction will prevent this to do well at The Emmy (of course if this turns out to be what has been expected), but I wonder others here have a different opinion.
That comment (which he made months after the ceremony during an interview) can’t be categorised as ‘backlash’ against Moonlight. He wasn’t speaking out against the film – he was speaking out against the industry/Academy.
As you say, the issue isn’t as big with the Emmys, which just awarded Watchmen in the same category The Underground Railroad is competing for this year. I think the other posters were commenting on general public perception rather than what voters think specifically. Public perception is (to some degree) important in shaping awards narratives though.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 16, 2021 at 3:57 am #1204203395BTW, will Emmy get a backlash if this wins like they did back when Moonlight won? It was a very small backlash actually, but people like Spike Lee made a statement for that.
I’m assuming you mean Green Book (which Spike Lee spoke out against), and no – the issues with that film are different to the point being discussed.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 15, 2021 at 5:17 am #1204201743Christopher Rosen briefly raised a really good point on a recent video chat with Joyce Eng which I’d like to expand upon…
I just watched it and I got the sense that he was underestimating The Father (despite saying he was predicting it for Screenplay). He suggested that Riz Ahmed was ahead of Hopkins in the best actor race for example (which is obviously wrong).

Emmy voters, if you’re reading this, please make it happen. She need her second nomination.
She should already be a winner.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 12, 2021 at 7:48 am #1204195507I do think there’s possibly an element on the forum of wanting The Father to win something and collectively giving it more of a chance than it actually has. I definitely don’t see the Philomena comparison though. That was a Weinstein push lacking the natural passion that The Father has generated, and it didn’t have a reason for missing the guilds (unlike The Father which didn’t send screeners). I don’t think the 12YAS comparison fits either. McQueen was always losing Director in that race, while Nomadland is covered by Picture/Director/Cinematography. It needed the Screenplay win in a way that Nomadland doesn’t.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)April 10, 2021 at 8:20 pm #1204191354Exactly we have opinions here BUT the mere fact that she won Critics Choice, Globes, and fuc*ing SAG means it was worthy. You all are perplexed about why she is sweeping. Lol.
You’re new here so it will take you time to fully understand the different factors to consider when predicting awards. Performance is only one factor. Someone winning an acting award doesn’t automatically make them the best performer.
