Matilda the Musical has gotten rave reviews across the board. As a lot of the major films predicted have been critic’s duds do you think it might be surprising and pull off a few major nominations? Definitely at the Golden Globes and perhaps the Oscars? Emmma Thompson is getting some of the best reviews (maybe supporting actress?) it was a Tony winner in several categories. Tim Minchin’s music is sublime. Is it an Oscar dark horse?

I’ve watched it and to me it is fairly pedestrian and not as good as several other comedies such as Barry, WWDITS and especially Reservation Dogs. Not sure why the critics slobber all over it. Jason Sudeikis is ok but nothing special. What am I missing?

October 10, 2022 at 8:17 am #1205113464I have not seen any love for Reservation Dogs. It is phenomenally good. Just finished watching its 2nd season in entirety and it is slamming. I have never really seen a show like it before. Full of humor, pathos and such specific references to Native American culture. It leading kids are all great with a special shout out to Paulina Alexis (Willie Jack) and Lane Factor (Cheese). It 2nd season currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. And it won the Peabody Award this year. There has got to be room for it as series and several supporting divisions.
August 17, 2022 at 9:17 am #1205048407I think I am in the minority but I don’t get the love for “Succession”. It is a well crafted show with good acting but the stories seem unbelievable and the people are all so disgusting. There is no one really to root for and I have no sympathy for anyone.

I actually watched it a second time just to make sure I wasn’t having a bad day. Will Smith’s performance seemed to be so fakey and unreal. I’m totally on team Andrew Garfield.his performance is so warm and real.

Her role was underwritten and was confusing (why do the white jets hang out in Valentina’ if she is a Puerto Rican they hate?) If she does get a nom, it will only be for sentimental reasons.

I loved Hillbilly Elegy- I come from that part of the country and the situations and acting were so much like my family and friends I grew up with. I think the critics had it in for he author of the piece because he is a conservative and they began to read their agenda’s into it.
I really didn’t like Mank and I wanted to love it. I think it is very convoluted and unimpressive mess.December 31, 2020 at 6:52 pm #1203955763I really wanted to love Mank. I love Citizen Kane. I love David Fincher as a director. But it was really the emperor’s new clothes to me. As it stands, I kinda liked it. The screenplay was the problem. There was zero emotional connection with any of the characters. I did not care about anyone. And the situations seemed very contrived. I am a huge fan of old Hollywood and the mechanisms of the studio system. However, nothing seemed to click and be genuine. I was particularly disappointed in the last big scene at San Simeon with Mank’s monologue to Hearst. A big so what. It really seemed seemed like the writer and director had a huge axe to grind with Orson Welles because Citizen Kane was so successful. I know it was based on the Pauline Kael hit piece on Welles but I don’t think it was a convincing adaptation.
