June 18, 2021 at 9:40 am #1204306861Is there a reason season 3 of Master of None isn’t being considered more strongly? It has yet to lose writing, and Chapter 4 received critical acclaim. I’ll admit I’m biased, but it feels like it checks a lot of boxes for a nomination (known series, recency, positive reviews, Emmy favorite, etc).
ReplyApril 15, 2021 at 5:34 am #1204201763If HBO’s FYC is correct and Euphoria does go Drama, would that make Colman Domingo be eligible as guest giving he’s in technically in the half of the episodes/specials (literally, 1/2)
Maybe they’ll make an exception but the rule for guests is “For performers appearing in less than 50% of the eligible drama series episodes.” Since it’s only two episodes, if you appear at all, you’re in 50% of the series. So is anyone guest eligible?
ReplyApril 6, 2021 at 12:10 pm #1204182144Coel reminds me of Shira Haas last year. Or like Riz Ahmed for The Night Of. Neither are big names but their work on their shows has a lot of buzz and acclaim and there is such a strong drive to award I May Destroy You like there was with Unorthodox last year and The Night Of a few years ago. I am currently predicting that I May Destroy You gets enough passion to overtake The Queen’s Gambit in Writing. A bit like Unorthodox having enough passion to win directing last year and Riz Ahmed and The Night Of having enough passion for him to win without any precursors.
This is an honest question, so I apologize if it is dumb or comes off differently than intended, but can you explain where the drive to award I May Destroy You is manifesting? I’ve just seen the gushing over The Queen’s Gambit, particularly in the US, but I’m not as clued into things apart from the awards and nominations handed out.

March 22, 2021 at 8:53 am #1204150667WandaVision will get category frauded into Comedy, plunging all of our predictions into chaos.
I’ve been thinking about this so much since I read the post this morning. While this may not be the right thread for this question, how many wins would WandaVision walk away with in Comedy? I feel like with the weaker field, it and Ted Lasso would dominate.

So was Deadpool.
Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but with Deadpool, Wonder Woman, A Quiet Place, and Crazy Rich Asians (mentioning these for closeness, not quality) all getting PGA nominations recently, the distinction doesn’t seem as close as it might otherwise.
ReplyAugust 3, 2020 at 6:39 am #1203623192Succession had a bigger over performance though, being the only show to do well in every field, unlike Ozark which missed out on two seemingly easy acting nods.
I’ve been thinking about this. As sofan pointed out in the Creative Arts discussion, 13 of Succession’s nominations are above the line. Half of their nominations come from a single branch. Does Ozark having nominations from three additional branches help even out the explosion of support Succession got from actors? Also, and maybe this was just in comedy series, but I thought I remembered there being some correlation with series wins and being nominated for sound mixing.
The breakdown looks like this (and pardon the order, in my mind it made sense):
Ozark
Series – 1
Acting – 3
Directing – 2
Writing – 3
Editing – 2
Casting – 1
Production Design – 1
Music Composition – 1
Cinematography – 2
Sound Mixing – 1

Ahh yes, that’s why Homeland (previous drama series winner) and Modern Family (five time comedy series winner) are swimming in nominations this year. Or why Veep (three times comedy series winner) performed so well last year.
As much as I wish Better Call Saul would have an Emmys explosion like Breaking Bad did in its final year, I don’t think it will happen. Maybe I’ll reconsider if it finally wins an award this year. BCS falling out of actor and editing bodes poorly. But I’d love to be proven wrong whenever the final season is eligible!
I say Stranger Things. Riley’s post above was very persuasive.

Didn’t he win for The Office as a producer in 2006? And for writing on SNL in 2002?
ReplyJune 30, 2020 at 10:00 am #1203558742It is listed as a comedy campaign priority, yet they are also not pushing it to us for interviews. Not saying that we would get Michael Douglas or Alan Arkin or even Chuck Lorre necessarily, but it is not like they are throwing us Lisa Edelstein or Sarah Baker or Andy Tennant or Al Higgins or the editor or the casting director or whoever else. Reiser seems to be the only one doing a press run right now.
Riley, do you think this means I can start to allow my hopes for Sex Education to rise a tad? It’s not listed as a priority on the FYC site, but you’ve done interviews with Ncuti Gatwa and Gillian Anderson and I saw Deadline posted one with Asa Butterfield earlier. I wasn’t sure if those interviews are being “pushed” as you described or not. But seeing Anderson and Butterfield pop up in the same day has me feeling more hopeful than I probably should be.
June 25, 2020 at 10:36 am #1203551598From what I understand, Kristen Bell will still be in Central Park. She’ll just have a new character. Molly will be recast as early as season 2, which is already recorded. If they find a replacement soon, Bell could miss a year, but she’d be back for season 3 as someone new. Big Mouth is keeping Jenny Slate for its upcoming season, then Missy will be recast for season 5.
ReplyJune 20, 2020 at 8:24 am #1203543596Considering Limited Actress will (most likely) have 5 nominees, I’m seriously considering dropping both Reese and Kerry for Shira Haas. I just don’t see voters making their minds between both LFE girls and Shira reminds me a lot of Joey King. Her show is an International hit and her performance is hugely acclaimed.
I may be wrong, but the voting process is still the same, right? You can still vote for an unlimited number, so no one will need to make up their mind. They can check them both off and Shira Haas. It’s the being nominated that depends on the number submitted, right?
