I’ve never seen a backlash like this. I don’t think anyone will take the Grammy’s seriously anymore. Every single music publication came out against this line up. I feel bad for whoever is going to win this year. Their wins won’t be viewed as legitimate.
Abel aside, the state of that AOTY line-up…
November 24, 2020 at 7:22 pm #1203869441On a brighter note, Punisher is my favorite album of 2020 and I’m so happy Phoebe overperformed. She deserved all those nominations. Hope she wins one.
November 24, 2020 at 7:13 pm #1203869376It’s also not just “random people on Twitter” who are questioning it all. Rob Sheffield liked this tweet, for instance, by the deputy editor at Billboard:
Andrew Unterberger @AUgetoffmygold Think folks are actually underselling just what a disaster this album of the year crop is. The Jacob Collier nod is prob the most transparently industry-insider Big Four nom this century. That Black Pumas nod is for the Deluxe Edition of a *June 2019* LP.
Andrew Unterberger @AUgetoffmygold This isn’t just LOL Grammys. Nominating a Coldplay album most folks [didn’t know] existed is LOL Grammys. Nominating these Jacob Collier and Black Pumas albums is genuinely destabilizing, credibility-testing shenanigans. Definitely the worst [AOTY line-up] since they moved to eight noms, maybe the worst since I started writing about music.
November 24, 2020 at 6:59 pm #1203869298it’s very possible someone was bribing people to vote for yummy but there isn’t a pop committee so they couldn’t have just took Abel out.
Technically they can do whatever the hell they want because there is no transparency. Whatever happened, it’s not great.
But it is what it is. The shutout doesn’t negate his success in any way; he’s bigger than ever and he’s doing the Super Bowl show. Unless he has receipts from the supposed negotiations, this will die down without further escalations—just as they escaped previous drama with other artists.
November 24, 2020 at 6:53 pm #1203869278there’s no committee in pop he just didn’t get enough votes to get in there. It’s very possible voters just weren’t liking After Hours as much as we were expecting them too.
There is no conceivable way that Yummy would receive more votes than Blinding Lights, unless something was up—regardless of what they thought of After Hours as a whole.
November 24, 2020 at 6:44 pm #1203869249Boy, this has been a strange day.
Not sure what to say about Abel. Zero nominations just doesn’t happen naturally. Had it been just an AOTY snub or maybe a general field shut-out only, then possibly. But this does seem like something happened behind the scenes, whether related to the Super Bowl or not. It’s just too implausible, whatever your feelings on him and his output. Fiona should’ve been in GF, too.
Lots of great nominations too, though. But this whole thing left a bit of a poor taste. And I don’t think you can say this “happens every year”—I’d actually say this kind of rejection is close to unprecedented for a presumptive frontrunner that people predicted would get the most nominations out of everyone.
November 24, 2020 at 9:48 am #1203863617I don’t even know what to say!!! The drama. Was the BRP drunk when making their picks?
ReplyNovember 24, 2020 at 9:27 am #1203862696I wonder if Adore You getting in for BMV is suggestive of how it’ll fare in ROTY/SOTY…
ReplyNovember 24, 2020 at 9:18 am #1203862345I wanted to put Punisher in AOTY but i thought i was a delusional stan
Lol, same
ReplyNovember 24, 2020 at 9:13 am #1203862225I really hope Phoebe gets into AOTY.
Also my gut tells me Harry’s getting shut out.
This is all too exciting……..
ReplyNovember 24, 2020 at 8:28 am #1203861647I hope we’ll all be reasonably happy with the nominations.
No egregious snubs, please, I can’t take it.
November 24, 2020 at 7:10 am #1203861230I have a feeling that Harry will either do very poorly or very good, so I see either:
Poor scenario: Just BPVA or shut-out (again)
Good scenario: (AOTY), ROTY, BPVA, BPSP
