If that was supposed to be a quote reaction, I’m just stating a fact. The show is creepy. It turns people off. Not saying it’s good or bad, but it’s underperforming for a reason.
It’s not the only reason but it’s a large part of what turned me off, I really wouldn’t be surprised if it turned voters off as well. But yes, fatigue is also definitely a part of it.

ReplyFebruary 1, 2023 at 7:29 am #1205279309agree but girls5eva will become a hit once it transitions to Netflix and people discover it. once the TikTok generation discovers Wickie she will be everywhere. Queen
It really does have that Tina Fey vibe, if 30 Rock and Kimmy Schmidt can get the viral attention I see no reason why Girls5eva can’t also become a meme factory if put in front of the right audience.

Confident Lyonne will secure a spot.
I also feel like this was a huge factor in Severance taking off last year compared to other Apple projects, stuff like For All Mankind and Girls5eva had the acclaim but they didn’t have the big names that Poker Face does. I also feel like already there’s much more buzz for Poker Face online compared to Girls5eva, which I’ve only really seen critics talk about.

I feel like BB is a pretty straightforward fall from grace narrative that’s easy to follow, very flashy and full of action. For several seasons BCS was two seemingly unrelated tv shows stitched together that took years to show how they were connected, the Chuck and Jimmy storyline is amazing but not nearly as action and violence packed as anything in BB, plus all the time jumping stuff. I prefer BCS to BB but I think it’s a harder sell and it requires some trust and patience from the viewer. I could easily see an emmy voter turning on episode 1, thinking it’s boring or too different and unconnected to BB and thinking “ugh, I’m not sitting through six seasons of this.” Kind of a similar thing to The Wire perhaps where they aren’t easy watches, but at least BCS got nominated every year.
ReplyJanuary 31, 2023 at 9:51 am #1205276019I will say, in the game as well at this point I don’t think I was that invested in Joel and Ellie, which is kind of just how it works as a video game, Joel is his own character but he’s also kind of meant to be someone the player can relate to and stand in for. I think future episodes will really make Joel and Ellie more likeable. Ellie in particular has an episode coming up that’s essentially a parallel to Long, Long Time, so I’m hoping that will get people more invested in her character.
A few people have commented on the writing of Ellie’s dialogue and I think part of the issue here is that so much of it is lifted from the game verbatim. I don’t know why but it just seems more awkward and stilted in TV format; in the game a lot of what she says pops in as you walk around and examine things, and it somehow feels strange just hearing it in a normal scene.

How many seasons of television can say they have not just one but two stunning, iconic episodes that’ll be remembered for years? It’s possible that the finale won’t translate well to TV but based on these first three episodes, I think this is gonna be another Fun & Games, Waterworks, Saul Gone level of one upping itself constantly.

I also haven’t seen it yet so I’m curious what audience they’re aiming for, on the one hand they’re obviously trying to get fans of the original film which would push it towards a more mature audience, but the subject matter and premise feels like it could fit very well into YA fantasy. I feel like it’s not going to become a thing, but maybe it could sneak in a nomination BTL? I’m really not sure. Sorry, this doesn’t really answer your question but I’ve been curious for a while if Willow could make a play anywhere.

ReplyJanuary 27, 2023 at 12:39 pm #1205270878Finally able to watch the second episode and I’m beyond impressed by the way they translate gameplay segments to the show. A lot of the tension in the game comes from playing as the characters and knowing that if you mess up the character will die, and I think it’s something a lot of video game adaptations struggle with. During the action scenes here I felt just as, if not more, tense as I did playing the game. It was shot so seamlessly and written so well that I didn’t even realize they had switched from something that was a cutscene in the game to a section where you’re controlling Joel. Expertly done
