Bruce Springsteen – Western Stars
Gave it a listen and enjoyed it. Might be one of best in the rock field so far. Certainly worthy of a nomination there and perhaps for AOTY. Mostly good reviews with 83 on Metacritic so far (25 reviews).
Father Of The Bride has a decent chance if nominated, being a safe choice for Grammy voters. Traditional instruments, no rappers, no explicit tracks, nothing to offend conservative tastes.
There are some weak lyrical moments like this line, “Something’s happening in the country / And the government’s to blame”
Wow, real brave political statement…[Read more]
While Morning Phase more acclaimed than many of the nominees that year, that might be saying more about the other albums than anything else. There were also more acclaimed albums that could of and should of made the cut (St Vincent was one).
But you have just made a good case for the safe choice winning. Pick the album(s) with no explicit…[Read more]
I can almost see the opposite happening. During the nomination period in 2013, Lorde has just one hit song (‘Team’ would go Top 10 later on), but ‘Royals’ was #1 for most or all of the nomination period and remained in the Top 5 or Top 10 during the final round voting.
Billie might enter the nomination period with multiple hits, but perhaps no…[Read more]
Perhaps you should look at the AOTY winners for the previous decade.
2000 – Santana
2001 – Steely Dan
2005 – Ray Charles (posthumous award)
2008 – Herbie Hancock
2009 – Alison Krauss & Robert Plant – Plant never won a Grammy as part of Led Zeppelin when they were at their peak
Edit – was tempted to add U2 (winners in 2006) to the list, but the…[Read more]
I’m glad people are finally recognising Old Town Road as a potential nominee and with each week at #1 it is looking more likely.
Lil Nas X’s anthem, “Old Town Road” is on pace to be the #1 song in the country for the seventh week in a row. This week, Nas’ track will fend off a debut from a power collab, Ed Sheeran f/Justin Bieber’s I Don’t Car…
That makes 6 weeks at #1 for Old Town Road and it looks like it might be strong enough to hold off Ed Sheeran&Justin in the current tracking week. The video is coming on Friday, which suggests it will get 8 weeks minimum, but probably more.
Good to see Lizzo charting with “Truth Hurts”
Would love to see her somehow reach the top 10.
You don’t know how the Critics Year End List Aggregate works do you?
This is not about the review scores from critics during the month of the album release. This is about the end of the year, when most music review site/publications post their list of 10 or more top albums of the year.
There is no requirement that they have made a review of…[Read more]
While Shallow was praised by some critics, ASIB didn’t make the top 50 in the aggregate critics year end list:
Unlike ‘The Suburbs’ which was #2 in that list in 2010, or 21 which was #7 in 2011, RAM #4 in 2013, Morning Phase #16 in 2014, 1989 #15 in 2014 and 25 which was #18 in 2015.
Having a few good/known songs plus filler never stopped people from winning before.
The difficult part might be getting past the committee who could decide that the ASIB soundtrack and Gaga have already won a Grammy for one of those known songs.
If ASIB gets the AOTY nomination, it will probably be the ‘safe’ choice for the Grammy voters. The…[Read more]
There are three versions of Old Town Road charting in the US iTunes Top 20 right now.
Lil Nas X – Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) [Remix]
Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus & Diplo – Old Town Road (Diplo Remix)
Lil Nas X – Old Town Road
They’ve probably finished production on the OTR video by now, but just haven’t needed it yet. This week OTR is…[Read more]
It’s a good job this wasn’t a prediction.
In any case, I don’t think we’ll be seeing Me! nominated for the general field (if anywhere). There were no nominations for the #1 “Look What You Made Me Do” and I can’t see this one doing any better.
It appears that the Ed Sheeran / Justin Bieber song could be for the upcoming Angry Birds 2 movie soundtrack.
Perhaps not be a serious chart contender or Grammy contender in that case.
Edit: This appears to have been contradicted and the song is most likely not for a movie. Song…[Read more]

Her post on IG was
Bunch of f***ing savages, 30 will be a drum n bass record to spite you. Chin up eh
Most likely a joke with fans and it won’t be drum n bass and won’t be called 30 either, since she said in the past that she didn’t want more named with age numbers.
‘This will be the last album after my age, I believe in trilogies,’ she said. ‘…
I’d agree that ‘When The Party’s Over’ is more grammy-friendly, but her team have to balance that up against ‘Bad Guy’ being a bigger hit and for SOTY they might want to nominate a song where Billie has a writing credit.
I don’t get upset over Grammy wins (at least not anymore), perhaps over some of the people that missed out, but I don’t take the Grammys too seriously as an indicator of great music.
One example mentioned earlier was Lionel Richie win with ‘Can`t Slow Down’ over ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘Born in the USA’ (also great albums from Tina and Cyndi Lauper).…[Read more]
Her team isn’t stupid and I’d be surprised if they’d release a non eligible track that might compete for sales and streams against her lead single.
Perhaps the live performance, like most live performances in pop music, was not 100% live and contained samples from the original production (instruments, backing vocals etc). In this case her team…[Read more]
