I’m sorry for my rant and I may disappoint some people but I lost my faith in SAG-AFTRA and Oscar for giving EEAAO Best Picture, really? it seems that there are people who want it to win (regardless) because of representation, because of age, other than looking solely on acting. And when it comes to acting, it isn’t the best. EEAAO is a pop corn comedy movie which is a water down version of Matrix (Keannu Reeves movies) with some family struggles. Years ahead from now, people in the industry will look back at the movie, oh… okay.
Based on your very, very basic take, I can definitely say that the entire cast is losing sleep thanks to your comment and are currently in the process of returning their trophies to the academy as we speak.
March 12, 2023 at 6:01 pm #1205346234At least Network was for deserving performances. These wins will age like milk
I’d understand this for JLC, but for Ke and potentially Michelle? Cope.
March 8, 2023 at 9:27 am #1205338308Cate has always been winning and she deserves it. But a lot of people on this forum are SO overacting and spreading fake news like “Michelle calling out Cate” when Cate was never mentioned by Michelle. A lot of people have so much time on their hands and are so bored, next please.
March 7, 2023 at 10:25 am #1205336187It’s the sound and editing stat. Do you think EEAAO would have won over Top Gun had they been in the same category at ACE? That is the question. Comedy was easier to get.
While that may be true, it won against TGM at the BAFTAs for editing so, I’d day EEAAO has the edge here.
March 3, 2023 at 5:21 am #1205330256JLC- Veteran, SAG (Industry)
Angela- Veteran, CC (Non-industry), GG (Non-industry)
Kerry- Critics Darling/ Frontrunner (By a HUGE margin), BAFTA (Industry)
On paper, Kerry’s winning. She has both the critics and industry’s support. Angela hasn’t won a single industry award, and it doesn’t help she only has very few critics’ wins.
Yes, actors who haven’t been the critics frontrunners have won. (Aka recently with Benedict vs Will– Benedict was winning by a landslide with the critics) however, even if Will had such few critics wins, he won at least one (2 actually) industry awards (SAG and BAFTAs) over Benedict. The only people who fit Will’s situation are JLC and Kerry (with Kerry being the critics’ frontrunner). I think Kerry has the edge here, with JLC second, and Angela 3rd. In a perfect world we would’ve had Stephanie winning, but Kerry’s a worthy winner, too.
March 2, 2023 at 3:44 am #1205328720Has anyone considered if Everything Everywhere could win score? I know it’s considered a long shot but I find it strange that with the film being such a juggernaut and score being such a wide-open category, no one seems to have raised the idea of the BP frontrunner being able to take advantage of that (kinda like All Quiet at BAFTA). Everything Everywhere‘s score is almost wall-to-wall and scores containing elements derived from a specific musical culture often win here: think the Indian sitars from Life of Pi or the various African drums and wind instruments of Black Panther. Everything‘s score contains Chinese paigu drums, gongs and Mayan flutes, and generally feels like the most layered and distinctive of the five nominated scores. (As a side note, it also includes the wittiest rearrangement of Debussy’s Clair de Lune I’ve ever come across in a film, and that piece is overused to high heaven.)
I agree with this take. Babylon only won once (GG), and it wasn’t even an industry award. I’d be sure of Babylon if it won CC, but it didn’t. All Quiet was the best pic winner that rode the wave to the Original Score win in the BAFTAs. Arguably, I think the same can be said for Everything Everywhere here in the Oscars.
GG- Babylon love= Score
BAFTAs- All Quiet love= Score
Oscars- EEAAO love= Score
(My parallelisms above are pure speculation and untrustworthy but they were fun typing nonetheless, haha.)
ReplyMarch 1, 2023 at 10:51 pm #1205328614EEAAO could in theory win every category it’s up for (though not all of its nominations because no way is JLC tying with Stephanie Hsu). But I really don’t see that happening. Winning CDG over Wakanda Forever is huge but I feel like that’s a combination of just loving the movie and also perhaps not being huge on Wakanda Forever compared to the first film and it just locks up Elvis in that category. Song… I don’t get where pundits are getting this idea. Naatu Naatu won both Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice and This is a Life wasn’t nominated at either. The nomination truly felt like a coattail not only because the song isn’t popular but because Mitski’s music is incredibly niche. Maybe if there was a situation like in 2020 where Lift Me Up or Hold My Hand won the Globe and Naatu Naatu won the Critics’ Choice I could see a scenario where This is a Life could come up the middle and win, but that wasn’t the hand we were dealt. It could maybe win Score since Babylon lost BAFTA and Critics’ Choice which makes it vulnerable, but it would be an unusual Score winner as much as I would be for it (to the extent that I’d be fine with Babylon losing score, which does not go very far if that makes sense). I feel like Supporting Actress (JLC) is the biggest question mark of them all. I feel like the fact that the movie swept SAG means something and also doesn’t mean something idk. The fact that the SAG lineup and the Oscar lineup is 5/5 is kinda eating at me. I don’t like the idea of her winning, especially over Stephanie Hsu, but I also think it would be stupid to say she can’t win. The one that’s giving me the most trouble is Actress but that’s for a different thread… I’m also not 100% sure about Editing just yet. I’m pretty sold on the other four though.
I do feel like EEAAO can win score. It really isn’t an odd choice fot score, it’s bombastic and grand, just like how Black Panther was back then. As for editing, I think it will win. Experts will defend the whole sound/editing combinations to death. Well, if you rewatch TGM and EEAAO you can clearly see who has not just the most editing, but the smartest editing as well. EEAAO has some amazing continuity editing that just go sooooo well with each other. This will be the year where sound and editing do not match, in my opinion.
February 27, 2023 at 3:11 am #1205321767People saying Jamie and Stephanie splitting on the oscars makes no sense at all. If they were to split, they would have split here in SAG, yet that have not. The frontrunner is Kerry, and she is winning this.
February 26, 2023 at 10:49 pm #1205321463I really enjoyed both Coda and Nomaland but Everything Everywhere is definitely the best winner of the last several years alongside Parasite.
+1 to this! EEAAO and Parasite!
February 26, 2023 at 3:28 am #1205318344EEAAO winning (if it does) will be great because it is anti Oscarbait.
This is SOOO true. An almost all-asian cast with hotdog fingers and dildos, gotta love it, haha.
February 24, 2023 at 10:35 am #1205316507Even if Michelle wins SAG, Cate is winning the Oscar. I’m team Yeoh but Cate did an absolutely breathtaking job in TAR. Cate is just as deserving to win and let’s just be happy that a deserving nominee is winning this year.
February 20, 2023 at 7:01 pm #1205311662Is anyone predicting SAG ensemble for Banshees? It won Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in BAFTAs against EEAAO which had 0 acting wins.
February 20, 2023 at 6:01 am #1205310885I think Barry Keoghan will win the Oscar. He’s the heart of the movie and the definition of what a supporting performance should be.
The problem with this is, Ke is also exactly like this. Honestly, if the win does go to a banshees guy, I would prefer Gleeson to win.
February 20, 2023 at 2:07 am #1205310753Keoghan is not Winning. But what this Will impact in the Oscars is that Condon have a lot if chances of taking Oscar home. Banshees got 2 BAFTAS for Acting awards and that could be traduced in at least one Oscar in a Acting categories. Yes ,is the same BAFTA that choose Will Smith over Cumberbatch, Ariana de Bose over Jesse Buckley or Judi Dench. Same BAFTA that choose McDormand, Same BAFTA that choose Hopkins over the overhyped Boseman. So , yeah , is about the performance. Are the same BAFTAS that choose once Mahershala Ali or Monique. Stop that excuses that BAFTA choose white first. Condon gave a better performance than Bassett. I don’t know if Keoghan was better than Quan, but Quan has many Oscar Winning Moments. I don’t think Basset has one. Oscar nomination moments yes, but no Oscar winning Moments.
Bassett actually has that one speech at the start of the film, but honestly I do not think it’s enough. As long anyone other than JLC wins, I’m fine.
February 20, 2023 at 2:03 am #1205310751In Original Screenplay, could EEAO/Banshees be like Green Book/The Favourite?
Green Book won WGA (The Favourite was ineligible there like Banshees). The Favourite won BAFTAs but Green Book surprises everyone at the Oscars.
