Isn’t the directors branch only like 500 people? 2 shocking snubs also feels very possible….January 25, 2022 at 1:00 pm #1204748659
Does anyone know if AACTA didn’t get screeners for TLD or something like that? It’s weird that Olivia missed there, given she won supporting the year before….I’m beginning to think her strength might be overestimated. AACTA has always nominated and/or awarded the eventual winner going back to Meryl.January 19, 2022 at 6:31 pm #1204739344
Well there’s around ~2,000 actors in the actors branch of the academy, and they’re all SAG members. Each year’s SAG film nominating committee however is a random selection of 2500 out of all 160,000 SAG-AFTRA…so the actual overlap is probably only a couple of people each year.
jk this says there are about 1250 academy actors:January 19, 2022 at 6:29 pm #1204739340
How many SAG members are also Academy voters? Is there like an approximate figure?

Out of curiosity does anyone know how large the bafta juries are? I know they try to make them a diverse mix of actors/directors/producers etcJanuary 16, 2022 at 4:52 pm #1204732718
Actually, a second lead Oscar is a very big deal, don’t look how Frances managed to get second and third so close, Anthony Hopkins and Meryl Streep waited decades. They don’t give it out easily.
She managed by being the central figure in an Oscar sweeping BP winner, and imho it was also an award for getting a very timely and important movie made (she optioned the book and hired Chloe, not the other way around).
Kidman transformed herself to be sure and did amazing, but given that BTR is such a cut and paste biopic film and there’s probably going to be at least 5 more Nicole Kidman oscar-worthy performances in the future, I don’t think it’s happeningJanuary 16, 2022 at 11:45 am #1204732064
Not sure if anyone has pointed this out but I find it interesting that Blade Runner’s critic and audience scores were higher than Dune’s, same with Arrival:
Villeneuve’s is still really strong I think but the narrative that it’s his best work doesn’t hold waterJanuary 15, 2022 at 7:57 pm #1204730636
Yes. Its been discussed at length. Its clear that critics wins really don’t matter. All of Kristen’s critics wins couldn’t get her a Golden Globe win OR a SAG nomination.
I agree having a lot/the most critics wins counts for nothing, I’m saying having none and so few nominations compared to other contenders is a pretty unprecedented winner. Zellweger and Meryl Streep had a ton at this point, and BTR isn’t a BP frontrunnerJanuary 15, 2022 at 7:42 pm #1204730614
Has anyone brought up Nicole not even having a single critics win so far? the Globe is her only: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Being_the_Ricardos#Accolades
Chastain has 3 I believe and tons more nominations and Meryl had at least that many by this time when there weren’t half as many critics groups.
I just can’t get over her being anointed the frontrunner from only the corrupt Euro-cabal tweet spree that was the Golden Globes. Most of their influence on the race imho was from giving actors an early stage for emotional speeches in front of a dressed up & boozed up industry.
I’ll eat my words when/if she does win but I really only see Gaga fending off Olivia Colman right now…January 15, 2022 at 12:14 pm #1204729837
Anyone else see Hamaguchi bumping Branagh out of director? The bar is pretty high and artsy for B&W movies in director, and with the juxtaposition to Macbeth….January 15, 2022 at 8:59 am #1204729404
What’s the main criticism against HoG again? It’s too pulpy and historically inaccurate? Not now
