Just a good church going southern boy, who always watched the Oscars as religiously as church. One of my favorite places to be is in a dark theater, getting lost in another world for a couple of hours.

I think the fact that the part was frumpy, unlikable, and, well, a psychopath probably. These days, some would use it as their “Oscar vehicle”. A stage actress like Bates saw the great character underneath it all. I think it needed an unknown and someone willing to let herself get lost in the character.

Agreed, I think these were close races, especially 98. I just think she was in films with less support than her competition. She lost to women who were in the Best Picture winner, while her films got just 1 other nomination. I was pleasantly surprised she won for Misery, though. What an amazing performance that was!!

I think Bates was a VERY close 3rd for Primary Colors. I think Redgrave just squeaked by her because of more love for Gods & Monsters. For About Schmidt, I think she was 4th. I think Streep and Moore were above her.
I loved Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes, but I love Midler in For the Boys too (and I read the book Fried Green Tomatoes and the…[Read more]
Looking at these awards, I must say I’m not too shocked. NY loves making bold choices in the Best Actress category over the past 25 years (Linda Fiorentio, Cameron Diaz, Diane Lane, Hope Davis, Rachel Weisz, Regina Hall). I’m glad to see them go with Lupita in a mesmerizing performance. The love for The Irishman is not shocking either. Could…[Read more]
I read somewhere that folks may have been saying Luke not booing.
Happy for Maren, Kacey, and Ashley. American Scandal by Ashley is one of the best songs I’ve heard by anyone in a while. I sometimes listen to it 4-5 times in a row on repeat.
I can’t wait to go back and watch some of the performances. I’m eager to see the opening with all the…[Read more]
So I will be the naysayer (there has to be one in every crowd) and say this was an awful season. I didn’t like the writing, the directing was meh and the performances (outside of Lily Rabe and most of the time John Carroll Lynch) were just no (that’s even with me not taking amateur Gus into consideration). Coven was the last AHS I completely…[Read more]
I have hate watched since most of Freak Show (stopped during Hotel, skipped Roanoke and Cult, went back to Apocalypse out of peer pressure) and yeah, this season is bad. I can’t even enjoy it on a fun campy level. It was good seeing Lily Rabe on last night. It shows how good acting can lift iffy writing. I’m glad that Lily has branched out past…[Read more]
I thought the work that he did on As the World Turns when he came in as head writer with no soap experience was AMAZING! I know Martha Byrne credited him immensely for her Best Actress win. What he did for the Lily/Rose storyline and especially Barbara’s storyline was amazing.
I only watched ATWT near the end of my soap…[Read more]

I’m in the middle of episode 3 and stopped (for what I can’t recall. Football game? Dinner? Something at least) and this has some entertaining moments but some moments that play to Ryan Murphy’s worst instinct. It has too much camp to be grounded in reality and too much reality to be grounded in camp, so tonally, it can be a mess at times. Ben…[Read more]
