Angel and Indya have always come across as brother and sister. I get the narrative for why the characters are together but Papi has always had more chemistry with guys. He and Damon had sparks!
I so agree. Damon and Angel would make more sense to me as a couple.May 11, 2021 at 10:51 am #1204250883
Lucky? Probably. What with Sidney Poitier being honored the same night, the stars were aligned for both her and Denzel. As Washington said in his speech, the Academy was getting “two birds in one night” (they did the same thing with “Moonlight” a few years ago). I just wish the movie she won it for was of higher quality. Have any of you watched “Monster’s Ball”, lately? It’s fucking awful.
I don’t think Monster’s Ball was awful at at all. I thought it was a gripping drama with great performances.May 11, 2021 at 3:45 am #1204250474
by the time Halle won the Oscar she was hot off her Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe winning role for Dorothy Dandridge. She didn’t just win a random Oscar out of nowhere. She was in the prime of her career.
Halle is a gifted actresses that should be getting better roles. there are plenty of roles over the years i could have seen her in…..Sandra Bullock’s role in Gravity for example.
I hope Bruised pans out well for her and she can really start directing even more and creating more opportunities for herself.
But to answer the question. She was lucky…everyone that wins is lucky.May 4, 2021 at 6:03 am #1204241976
I’ve come the conclusion that some people really haven’t watched many of Viola Davis’s performances. She does not give the same performance over and over.May 4, 2021 at 6:01 am #1204241972
this is an oldie but it is how I feel too. When people say she’s at the same level as Meryl I’m stunned. She’s only been a “known” name for what 12 /13years? Meryl has been operating at an incredibly high level for more than 40years. Yes, she will get nominated for breathing but she gives consistent, varied and often risky performances all the time so people can’t claim its bc she’s white. Lots of actresses are white and they don’t have her career.
Viola can be a powerful performer but I haven’t seen much variation in her roles.
You think her performance in The Help was the same as her performance in How to Get Away With Murder? They couldn’t be MORE different.May 4, 2021 at 5:53 am #1204241960
Its always great to see Kate Winslet get great reviews in a great project. I’m happy for her. I’m a big fan.May 4, 2021 at 3:03 am #1204241880
BLACK PANTHER is one of the best Comic book movies of all time, told a poignant story, and had amazing reviews on top of it being one of the biggest films of all time. Add to that the crafts, the great score, the good acting, and the fact that it is UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK. It deserved all of its praise.May 4, 2021 at 1:47 am #1204241849

Oscar Isaac is the kind of actor I think will win on his first nomination.
other great actors

I think the key difference is that Fonda and Hepburn had sentimental narratives giving them the vote. Whereas Hopkins hasn’t been this good in years and McDormand is the reason why her movie won best picture and its nonwhite female director won best director. Elephant in the room — nobody really likes Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. It got recognized in the craft categories but had no passion to get people wins in the last leg of the season.
Ma Rainey was liked. Its been nominated all season, despite missing Best Picture, has excellent reviews, and won Viola the SAG, and won two Oscars……not bad at all. It was probably almost nominated for Best Picture too.May 3, 2021 at 1:19 am #1204240228
Nobody did Davis dirty this year. She didn’t have the performance and she didn’t have the movie. That’s all. If anyone was done dirty that was Mulligan but her role was never an AMPAS thing. Davis gave a lesser performance in a total AMPAS wheelhouse. Lyp-synch’d while her competition (Day) actually sang. Why would anyone in their right mind vote for Davis?
Narratives shmarratives. They only serve as justification why a weak contender has a shot at winning (from weak contender’s stans POV not from the industry that votes one). If someone who supposedly has a narrative wins, it’s because voters found them the best not because of the narrative. Davis and Boseman only had narrative. They weren’t even close to the best in their categories and their movie was weak. They lost to better contenders. No rocket science.
Now, on topic of lip-synchincing, Malek won for that too but there were huge differences:
his movie was a boxoffice giant (900M worldwide) and a Picture contender
He played a legend and managed enough likeness in the role forhis performance to resonate. And resonated it did (see boxoffice and awards). How many have heard of Ma Rainey? Freddie Mercury level of fame she was not.
He didn’t go agianst a contender who sang on his own and he didn’t compete a year after another actor won for a singer role.
He carried the movie, wasn’t a co-star who is a borderline supporting or upstaged by a co-star
Ma Rainey IS a legend. She was from a very different time period singing a very different music, but Ma was definitely a legen.dApril 30, 2021 at 2:43 pm #1204236803
Well I don’t think we should be pitting black actresses against each other…..talk like “I can’t believe Jennifer Hudson has one but Angela Bassett doesn’t. Jennifer won with the right role in the right year.
