Yeah I see your point. So far no Black actress’ leading performance ever garnered enough passion to sweep anyway (which is beyond ridiculous). Only 4 of them had an actual shot, all of them were on shaky grounds and 3/4 eventually lost
Halle : lost the Globe, won SAG, no BAFTA nom, ignored by the critics, won Oscar
Whoopi : won the Globe, no BAFTA nom, LAFCA runner-up, lost Oscar
Angela : won the Globe, no BAFTA nom, loses Oscar
Viola : lost the Globe, won SAG, lost BAFTA, lost Oscar
Viola will need a serious critical push and at least a Globe win. Then BAFTA may follow
Halle was nominated for the BAFTA for Monsters Ball, and won the National Board of Review.September 15, 2020 at 12:48 pm #1203708406

If anything I’d say she’s in “danger” at every precursor
HFPA doesn’t really “love” her
SAG does but she won so many already, they might go for someone else (this also applies to McDormand btw)
BAFTAS are racist, she’s facing a British ingenue (Kirby) and no black woman ever won Lead Actress. This may finally be the time though
BAFTAS are racist, but it is interesting that they nominated Viola for Widows when no else did.September 13, 2020 at 7:10 pm #1203704384
i watched nomadland last night and it truly deserved the golden lion imo, i know i haven’t seen the other venice contenders but WHEW this was something special. i really adored frances’ performance but with how subtle she was i’m not sure if she’ll win a 3rd with this just yet, i’ll wait to see the other contenders (i see pieces of a woman this week too!) and chloe is beyond coming for director!!! can’t wait for you all to see this.
And the thing is Frances has ANOTHER baity performance coming up….Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” with Denzel Washington. WHEW!September 13, 2020 at 11:10 am #1203703342
I swear if Netflix campaign Streep more than Kirby…
Just saying whilst the record of Viola doing well for August Wilson plays is too good to ignore it’s worth baring in mind that Viola has missed the win for acclaimed performances before.
Viola Davis’s performance will be something very different for her. And like someone said before, if she does her own singing its a WRAP.September 13, 2020 at 10:56 am #1203703280
Did I just read that Aretha Franklin is not as much of a household name as Freddie Mercury?
I can assure you that Aretha Franklin’s name is more well known across ALL groups of people more so than Freddie Mercury. For example, more white people have probably heard of Aretha, than black people that have heard of Freddie Mercury….if that makes sense…
Aretha Franklin is the most well known female singer in the world (her and Whitney probably), and the first woman inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.September 10, 2020 at 1:04 pm #1203697597
If Bruised disappoints, Barry Jenkins should cast her in a supporting role so she can get nomination #2.
I have this vision of her being cast as a dance professor/teacher/instructor in the Alvin Ailey biopic he has coming up. I want her to work with more black directors.September 10, 2020 at 8:11 am #1203696992
I love Viola but I wonder why is she always predicted to win lead actress.?.?
Because she won an Oscar and two Tony’s for August Wilson works. She excels especially with works by August Wilson. On top of that we have never seen Viola do a role like this before, so it will seem new to us and the Academy. She is expected to slay.September 10, 2020 at 8:09 am #1203696986
Halle Berry preparing for her Rocky moment with Bruised…
I really want this to be a great moment for her. If this even gets good reviews she’ll have easier opportunities to direct, and get better roles…but more importantly get projects off the ground.September 8, 2020 at 3:03 pm #1203693526
You know there are other great working black actors besides Denzel Washington, right? I was just wondering why he is the only one.
That being said Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks are the two best, followed by Gary OldmanAugust 13, 2020 at 7:32 pm #1203644888
Fantasia (the best performer and singer). She would have been a star without the show most definitely.

Blanchett does seem likely to have one of her biggest decades yet, maybe bigger than the 2000s.
Nightmare Alley, Don’t Look Up, Lucy and Desi, and Armageddon Time all sound very promising and those are just the beginning. With all these projects she could very well get double nominated in one year (again).
Lucy and Desi, if the film is even received fairly well, will be the one to get that 3rd Oscar. Her performance will, of course, be amazing. I wish they would hurry up with that movie.
