For that empty spot in drama lead actor Forest Whitaker is contention however I see that another EPIX show Perpetual Grace, LTD, starring Ben Kingsley, has more critical acclaim (besides than a score of 40 all the others are 90 and above.) This is from one review:November 18, 2019 at 1:44 pm #1203185426
This was their best episode and based on the promo next week’s seem even more ambitious.November 17, 2019 at 4:11 am #1203182911
I see that many users are not predicting Stranger Things. I’m aware that sometimes HFPA drop shows for no reason but Stranger Things really had a stellar third season.November 16, 2019 at 1:21 pm #1203182303
– That last limited slot is indeed tricky. I am going with True Detective. Its Emmy nominations suggest that visibility was high and again, they nominated China Girl. – Russell Crowe is not getting nominated because The Loudest Voice is getting totally overshadowed by Bombshell just like All the Money in the World totally overshadowed Trust.
I think China Girl benefited from a fall timeslot. I would also say that True Detective would be a player for limited series if it had premiered after Emmys. If Truth Be Told is indeed bad I think Years and Years can take that last spot.
Trust had competed in drama and was a complete nonstarter for awards once it didn’t have any critical acclaim. The Loudest Voice also does not have any critical reception that would help it but I think there is a consensus that Russell Crowe is awards worthy. Lead actor category is also a bit weak in terms of competition.November 15, 2019 at 2:19 pm #1203181241
I definitely enjoy watching Watchmen but I don’t get why critics are obsessed with it. Maybe I’ll regret saying this as so far only 4 episodes have aired but still.
It would have been great for The Good Place to not have any leftover episodes for 2020 as it seems like the kind of a show that has an amazing finale, but the first batch of its final season really does not justify its place at the year’s best list.November 15, 2019 at 5:10 am #1203180507
Drama Lead Actor is such a hurdle to predict. Besides than Billy Porter and Tobias Menzies no is safe. I also have Brian Cox because he gave an amazing performance but other than that I don’t know who to predict. I feel like they might even return to Rami Malek, Liev Schreiber, and Billy Bob Thornton.November 15, 2019 at 3:10 am #1203180435
Last night I watched The Irishman and have to say that it should win Picture. De Niro and Pesci were amazing. Pesci should win supporting actor. Director should be between Bong Joon Ho and Martin Scorsese.November 13, 2019 at 6:43 am #1203177398
I am still predicting Truth Be Told and Octavia Spencer. These voters nominated The Alienist, The Sinner, and Top of the Lake: China Girl quite recently. They must be really liking that genre and none of them were critical favorites.
Also HFPA has been welcoming towards new platforms more than any other awards. Netflix did great with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Amazon Prime’s Transparent really built buzz with its Golden Globe wins. They recognized Hulu first with Casual. They even nominated EPIX’s Graves, a show no one has watched. Therefore I expect Apple Tv+ to do well, especially given that it is the first platform to have contenders from all three categories; offering voters to spread acknowledgement.November 13, 2019 at 6:19 am #1203177379
I would LOVE for it to be Collette as I found nothing about Watson’s performance to be all that special (sorry but not sorry). Collette, on the other hand, was riveting.
That’s actually why I don’t want to predict her. The fact that Chernobyl lost the acting races at the Emmys, despite the absence of a potential vote split, while winning both writing and directing shows that people who watched it are aware that performances are not that good. Due to how weak lead and supporting actor are I have both Harris and Skarsgard getting in easily, and that might be enough for Chernobyl. Watson is still a huge possibility though.November 12, 2019 at 4:11 pm #1203176580
House of Cards was one of the best shows of this decade, at least with its first couple of seasons. It’s a crime that Spacey and Wright has never won.November 12, 2019 at 4:06 pm #1203176576
I don’t think it ever had that supporting actress slot. To me, Streep, Dern, Arquette, HBC and Watson are such easy frontrunners. And the real threat now is Toni Collette.
You may replace Watson with Collette because they will handle the annual slot of Emmy nominated supporting actress in a limited series with Arquette. IMO, Emma Thompson is a contender as well.November 12, 2019 at 3:43 pm #1203176554
Am I the only one who doesn’t think The Morning Show is dead? It’s Apple’s headline show and the general audience loves it even if the critics don’t. I get more confident by the day particularly as it’s weekly episodes means it will sustain some attention all through voting. I say all this as someone who has considered The Politician finished ever since it got its reviews.
Both The Morning Show and The Politician are safe. Though, The Politician loses the supporting actress slot with both Paltrow and Lange in contention.November 12, 2019 at 7:29 am #1203175889
I think Don Cheadle is safe as well, especially after that Emmy nomination. HFPA has been really forcing to recognize Showtime after almost completely snubbing them a couple years ago that they nominated Jim Carrey and Frankie Shaw which were complete nonstarters at other awards. They even brought back William H. Macy.November 11, 2019 at 7:37 am #1203174382
Your logic about the recent winners is good, i will give you that, but you cannot be that sure that Newton would have been the winner without Strahovski and Bledel nominated, this is not serious enough.
Acknowledging a performance is subjective, but this is something objective: in 2017 Newton deserved to win over Dowd. By losing to Dowd, who has won due to strength of THT, Newton has immediately reached the overdue status hence why she has won with a performance inferior to her first time.
