I love Thompson as much as the next person but disappointing box office for Late Night means I just can’t see it this time. If Amazon couldn’t pull off Holly Hunter in The Big Sick as the vet actress in upmarket Summer comedy slot, I don’t think they’ll be able to do it for Thompson. Youth was probably Fonda’s last chance, and the rest of her career seems to be too comedy-focused.
Close and Winslet were probably second-place to win each of the last times they were nominated, so have a lot of good will going forward.
I would hope that Jessica Lange at 6 has another chance to be nominated.
Could happen for Streep this year with The Laundromat and Little Women.
Perhaps Antonio Banderas for Pain & Glory and The Laundromat too.
Netflix (Marriage Story) vs. Amazon (The Report) could potentially have a great proxy battle over for which film Adam Driver is pushed for Best Actor… unless Johansson ends up being more of a lead than AD in…[Read more]
