House of Gucci and The French Dispatch seem very likely contenders just from appearances.
Don’t count out something like The Humans making a splash. From the reviews I’ve heard Mass is uniformly brilliantly acted but it’s a four person piece for the most part apparently, which makes it pretty unlikely, but again who knows.

Actress and Supporting Actress is wide open, the non-Oscar nominees could definitely get a win here and I’d be happy for ‘em – it’s not just a McDormand v Kirby race in Lead, and someone like Kosar Ali could surprise in Supporting – neither Bakalova or Youn’s films seem that popular with the BAFTA membership overall (neither made it into the screenplay categories) while Rocks did.

Is she really a legend in Korea? It’s odd. Her Wikipedia page was only created in March and her IMDb bio looks very recent too. If she is so famous there I’d have thought somebody would have put her on Wikipedia sooner. (or maybe they just don’t use it as much there.)
It’s just not really as important to a lot of countries overseas. Like you look at the Wikipedia and IMDB bios to Japanese screen legends like Tatsuya Nakadai, and it’s all relatively brief in contrast to the impact he’s had on cinema there.
It’s important to acknowledge the gap in between the Western (specifically here, the American) bubble and the rest of the world sometimes when it comes to films. I’ve seen so many articles claim that Youn is a ‘breakthrough’ artist. No she isn’t in the same way as say, Paul Raci (who’s been working in very low-profile roles for a long time) is, she’s won countless awards in Korea and worked with very notable directors there as a high-profile character actress and has a super popular cooking show.

Me too. Just remember that Barkhad Abdi didn’t get many roles in Hollywood after Captain Phillips despite being a BAFTA WINNER and a ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE…
And he should’ve won the Oscar that year too, Leto’s win was not good and has only aged even more poorly with time.

Here’s 5 that come to mind:
– Julianne Nicholson
– Hiroyuki Sanada (I guess I’m referring more specifically to his Hollywood roles where he is horribly wasted, in a similar vein Lee Byung-hun)
– Matthias Schoenaerts
– Angela Bassett
– Lennie James

For those looking for more good Youn performances, she’s pretty solid in Beasts Clawing at Straws last year where she plays another character also called Soon-ja. And she’s fantastic in The Housemaid.

I’m not gonna focus on what this SAG win means for the Oscars – anything can happen, things are all still up in the air.
I’m going to focus on how wonderful it is to see Youn getting recognised and getting a chance to make a fantastic speech. It’s what she deserves!

Close and Colman’s reactions in particular were so wholesome.

Youn’s speech was the purest thing in the world and loved seeing how happy in particular Colman, Close and Odom Jr. seemed for her.

One good thing about SAG speeches being recorded beforehand is Zengel won’t have to stay awake till early hours for a long awards ceremony. I know if I was her age and needing to do all that I’d have just dozed off.

I remember going to see Black Panther on opening day, and I remember the audience’s reactions (and well, my reaction too) to T’Challa’s return in Avengers: Endgame. It wasn’t just superhero fans who were in awe of him, thet role alone made him a cultural touchstone. Add in the fact he played Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall. And this heartbreaking swan song performance. I’d say, in the very brief time he had in the spotlight, he more than solidified himself as a legend.

Should’ve gotten in for Sicario over Lawrence (though that was never going to happen). And she was fantastic in The Devil Wears Prada but I really don’t know who I’d take out of that lineup.

Youn is not Asian American, but she actually lived in the States for awhile back in the 70s/80s and actually had some interesting things to say in a recent interview (I’ll try and find it) about the gap between the generations of Asian immigrant experience.
I will say though. If Youn wins SAG, people might bring that narrative up, but mostly she’ll be winning because people love Minari and want to award her performance. She was in the conversation long before these recent incidents, in fact all the way back to Sundance I was hearing buzz for her performance.

Yeun is so amazing in this movie; he doesn’t get enough credit. He goes through so many emotions in Minari, but makes it look seamless. Between him, Boseman, Hopkins and Ahmed, we are just spoiled.
It’s really nice to see such understated performances get in. I wouldn’t say the Oscars never go for that kind of performance – after all, off the top of my head, they nominated Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson which is even more understated – but yeah the low-key nature of his role being acknowledged is wonderful. I’m glad he’s gotten the love he deserves.

Those Trial of the Chicago 7 ad header on this site putting in pictures of the actress who played Dave Dellinger’s wife, the undercover agent and the girl who took phone calls alongside the rest of the cast underneath the 3 SAG NOMINATIONS is hilarious and cringeworthy. It’s like Netflix realised ‘damn we’re the only Ensemble nominee with an all-male cast listed for SAG Ensemble eligibility, let’s change the narrative with these three cast members who had like 5 minutes of screen time altogether’.
