Babe, people (as in Twitter and pundits) have made awards nuclear science. They’re not happy with any performance, unless it’s a woke one like Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu and Carey Mulligan.
What, pray tell, makes Yeoh or Hsu’s roles “woke” (I could at least see why you apply that to Mulligan’s, even if “being concerned about societal tolerance for ‘boys will be boys’ behaviour” is something I’d hope we could all agree was important)?
March 12, 2023 at 8:47 pm #1205349091That was actually a good film
We lost tonight. Parasite is a masterpiece and they choose EEAAO instead
How exactly did they choose EEAAO “instead” of Parasite, a film from three ceremonies ago?
Butler lost because he wouldn’t stop doing the Elvis schtick.
Luhrmann films don’t win acting awards, historically. I highly doubt the Elvis voice played any role.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 8:40 pm #1205348991With Blanchett’s loss, half of the Best Picture nominees walk away with zero wins, and three of the five that did win something have only one Oscar. Everything Everywhere All at Once and All Quiet on the Western Front account for eleven wins between them.
EEAAO’s tally is the most for a Best Picture winner since Slumdog Millionaire.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 8:28 pm #1205348771FUCK YES!!!
EEAAO now joins A Streetcar Named Desire and Network in the three wins club. I guess we were due another, it’s been almost fifty years.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 8:25 pm #1205348727And now, the moment of truth for Michelle Yeoh. Blanchett would be a wholly deserving winner, but I admit I’ll be a bit deflated if Yeoh doesn’t get it.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 8:14 pm #1205348515Directing teams are almost never nominated for the Oscar, but when they are nominated they almost always win, this is the third win on four nominations.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 7:55 pm #1205348204Can’t believe EEAAO is winning so many undeserved Oscars. It had no business whatsoever winning original screenplay or supporting actress.
It deserved supporting actress, just for the other nominee.
Screenplay was completely deserved. That film is a massive acting of writing imagination.
March 12, 2023 at 7:50 pm #1205348117How many awards are left?
Picture, Director, the lead acting prizes, Editing, Sound, and (of all things) Original Song.
March 12, 2023 at 7:44 pm #1205348019Polley gets her Oscar, and the All Quiet surge finally hits a breakwater.
March 12, 2023 at 7:40 pm #1205347938Banshees will be going home emptyhanded.
March 12, 2023 at 7:17 pm #1205347638EEAAO is not losing Best Picture but I’m calling it now, it’s winning that and Editing, losing screenplay to Banshees, 5 wins in total (picture, director, editing, supporting actor & actress).
What that has happened tonight would make you think it won’t win Original Screenplay?
March 12, 2023 at 6:28 pm #1205346758My third miss of the night.
March 12, 2023 at 6:18 pm #1205346565A good early omen for Fraser.
I thought this one was an easy call, they always go for that sort of extensive prosthetic transformation of a major acting nominee. And yeah, Elvis technically also had that, but not nearly as much.
March 12, 2023 at 6:16 pm #1205346517And now, an early test for the strength of Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor candidacy.
