Why does Best Actress have to be the most dramatic forum thread of every single year holy shit.
because the gays like to fight. it’s exhausting and boring
(don’t come at me mods, i’m gay too lol)December 22, 2022 at 8:39 pm #1205206927
just got back from seeing iwdws. there were only three groups of people in the theatre. naomi gave one of the best performances of the year. as a whitney stan, she had her mannerisms and voice/cadence down to a t. the movie started out really strong but kinda lost its way to standard biopic wikipedia tropes in the middle. the end scene was incredible. every performance scene was electrifying. biggest downfall for me was they didn’t go deep enough into her substance abuse/family issues. they showed them, but it was really surface level. i realize they wanted to celebrate her more than rehash what everyone knows, but they missed out on going deep into whitney’s psyche. overall it was worth seeing for ackie’s performance alone (the supporting cast was great too.) but i struggle seeing a nomination for naomi this timeDecember 20, 2022 at 8:10 am #1205202380
Reviews for I Wanna Dance With Somebody are starting to come out. Strong praise for Ackie’s performanceDecember 17, 2022 at 3:22 pm #1205199221
does naomi ackie have any chance still? i feel like they’ve really dropped the ball on iwdwsDecember 17, 2022 at 3:20 am #1205198648
I sorry i just can’t see it for Bassett, like, it’s a Marvel Movie, i get she has the narrative and it’s Disney main push in acting (Disney Disney, not Searchlight Disney) but… It’s a Marvel Movie…
If she gets in I’m predicting her to win because… It’s a Marvel movie, and the academy in 14 years of Marvel never nominated no one. Because, again, it’s Marvel.
I quite liked her in the film tho so a nom would be deserving, i just don’t see it.
just to clarify… is it a marvel movie?? i don’t think the point is clear enoughApril 28, 2022 at 3:02 pm #1204936171
Alleged first test screening review for I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Apparently it’s just another bland biopic but Naomi Ackie is reportedly “amazing.” As a Whitney stan I’m excited to hear that the film goes into her lesbian relationship with Robyn. I still can’t get over the terrible film title thoJanuary 30, 2022 at 12:09 pm #1204760029
nah. liza was just getting started in the early 70s when she won her oscar. she went on to become a broadway AND hollywood legend, despite not having many other big film roles after cabaret.ReplyJanuary 1, 2022 at 2:30 pm #1204690731
I could swear you’d said this before lol
But she’s doing something VERY new. The Rachel Syme profile of her & Hilton Als’ Instagram post really nails how this is so different from anything she’s ever done before.
well you’d be wrong because the only other time i’ve commented on the supporting actress thread was about west side story 😛
and just because she’s doing something “new” or “different from anything she’s ever done before” doesn’t mean she deserves to win an oscar for itDecember 31, 2021 at 8:26 pm #1204689523
just watched the power of the dog and i just don’t understand all of the buzz around dunst’s performance. she was good but it wasn’t anything spectacular imo. and i love kirsten!December 28, 2021 at 8:19 pm #1204684592
i just watched west side story. i’ve been a fan of rita moreno for my entire life and thought she did incredibly well with what she was given, but i don’t think her role warrants an oscar nomination, nor do i think it will receive one. i think they missed out on making her scene with anita in the shop more impactful. while that scene was good, the writing could’ve been stronger to allow a stronger performance from moreno.
folks keep saying she’ll get in for the nostalgia factor or because she’s a legendary oscar winner making a comeback, but just last year they said the same about sophia loren and ellen burstyn. and while i know wss is a much bigger player than the life ahead and pieces of a woman were, i think that should be taken into account.December 24, 2021 at 2:06 am #1204676838
Viola Davis talks with JHud about ‘RESPECT’
I know Jennifer has almost no shot at a nomination at this point, but this is a cool interview with two iconic black performers for anyone interested 🙂November 24, 2021 at 2:25 am #1204602818
JHud and Carole King just got nominated for the Grammy for Best Song written for Visual Media. They’re getting inReplyNovember 22, 2021 at 5:02 pm #1204595924
Now that all of HOG, The eyes to Tammy…, and Respect are all underwhelming movies with great lead actresses, can we bring back Hudson into the conversation ? And also elevate people like Tessa Thompson ? Because this trend of recognizing white actresses in average movies without giving it more thought vs second guessing every actress of color in legit great movies or similarly average movies has got to end.
THIS! I don’t think it’s intentional by most posters on these forums but a lot of the time white actors get far more praise and recognition than their poc counterparts. It’s white privilege.October 3, 2021 at 11:44 pm #1204500870
easily her best album! it’s soo good. i’m not sure why there’s never any media coverage or reviews written about her stuff considering she’s on a major label and has been around for so long, but i’m hoping this album will bring jojo her flowersReplyAugust 14, 2021 at 4:43 pm #1204397194
I saw Respect yesterday and was very underwhelmed. JHud was incredible as were the other actors but the writing was very lackluster and the directing was so uninspired. I’m not sure why they hired a first time screenwriter and director for a film about the Queen of Soul. The director gave herself a minute long vanity cameo in the movie, yet left out many important elements of Aretha’s life which would’ve given more context and depth to the film. I could definitely see Jennifer getting a nomination based on her performance but the overall blandness of the film itself might keep her out. Ive been looking forward to this movie for a few years so I’m definitely disappointedNot now
