It is incredibly childish of Taylor fans to try to shame and bring down other pop stars by pointing out difference in Grammy success. Madonna is and will most likely always be (especially due to the move from physical sales to streaming) the biggest female pop star in history, put some respect on her name. If you feel that you need to defend Taylor (no one is attacking her I am a casual fan) you can do so without dragging other pop stars down.
ReplyApril 20, 2023 at 8:34 am #1205400458Okay, as of right now I can see Midnights taking BPVA but mainly because her competition is not there. Taylor has 12 Grammys, they like her we know this, however it is impossible to not point out only one of those wins come from the pop field which she has competed in since 2015. Similarly, Lady Gaga who debuted around a similar time to Taylor and has a comparable win/nomination count at the grammys has won 5 pop field grammys since 2015. Both are well liked by the Academy but there is precedence that the pop field prefers one to the other.
Do I think Taylor has a good shot at BPVA in 2024? Yes absolutely, more so than in BPSP as there is steeper competition. However noting that Taylor lost to Sweetener and Future Nostalgia is not shading Taylor it is simply noting that in the pop field, when voters have a plausible alternative to Taylor they usually go for it regardless of commerical success of her albums, the 2016 BPVA was incredibly weak excluding Taylor and both sides must be taken into account.
ReplyMarch 28, 2023 at 8:20 am #1205367053Um…don’t get me wrong I like his music, but is Bruno Mars determined to mine every single nostalgia bait ever? What is his musical identity outside of nostalgia throwbacks?
March 16, 2023 at 8:24 am #1205353950Nicki was always against super hard competition in in all her nominations till 2016, and was shut out in 2019 with Queen due to a combination of reasons including but not limited to:
- How messy the rollout
- The general attitude towards her at the time, some self inflicted some not
- None of her singles where super successful this era with the exception of maybe Chun-Li, but Rap Performance & Rap Song where super competitive that year, with Drake’s God’s Plan & Anderson & Kendrick tying.
- Her best option for a nomination was Rap Album, which had a weaker line up, with Cardi B being the most commerically successful nominee. Miller obviously had a lot of support behind him and Pusha T had a very good album as well. Nipsey had a pretty well received album but it wasn’t the most commerically viable and the voting/ceremony happen before his death, however he had a good fanbase at the time. Last but not least Travis Scott obviously tying Cardi B for commerical success. Nicki is stationed as a commerical rapper. She can make non-commerical music but her stance in the music industry requires her to pull in the numbers, something Nicki herself seems to care a lot about. Queen just didn’t get that, and with the positive but average reviews about the album being good but too bloated made her not get in a solid 5 person line-up
- As for Super Freaky Girl, personally I wasn’t a fan of that song. It was obvious that although Nicki says time and time again she dislikes her pop music, she wanted a pop hit and called up Dr. Luke and had one of the most blatant samples of 2022 (First Class and Big Energy being the others). Was Suoer Freaky Girl fun and catchy? yes. Should it have been nominated for a grammy? no, and neither should have Big Energy when there were better picks to be nominated.
I think that Nicki deserves a grammy. I am not a barb and do not like Nicki’s attitude towards people who don’t even mention her. She made a very good argument about the Big Energy/Super Freaky Girl situation but the argument got lost when she got into it with Latto. She should have gotten more nominations between 2010-2017 and might have won had her competition not be so steep. However, after looking at the 2019 rap categories, she wasn’t getting in, but tbh she was probably 6th-10th in voting for some categories. She needs to make at least somewhat commerically successful music with decent acclaim and stay away from anyone who can cause a scandal (Dr. Luke) as she already married a walking scandal. If the Kim Petras collab is true, then she is not following this path.
ReplyFebruary 9, 2023 at 8:58 am #1205298087My 3 favorite artists of all time are Beyonce, Gaga and Britney, and the only one of the three my close friends and family harp on me over is Beyonce, because they think she is overrated and don’t like how she seems to be put on a completely different level than the rest of celebrities. My mom particularly thinks it is rude of Beyonce to expect fan support so implicitly but then doing no promotion. I mean it is evident that Beyonce can get away with it but my mom argued to me that is part of an artists responsibility to provide their fans with content, yes they deserve their own lives of course, but it’s different thinking you can ignore your fans who continue your public recognition. I have heard much of the Beyhive complain about Beyonce’s lack of content this era, as even the Lemonade era had music videos and high profile performances (Grammys, VMA’s, Superbowl), I mean obviously it works for Beyonce as they are all buying her concert tickets (me as well) but I understand the argument.

February 4, 2023 at 1:12 pm #1205284038I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Beyonce/her team that came up with the idea of being a surprise performer. The Grammys at least when it comes to her performing will wait on her hand and foot, I think the media attention and public neediness for the artist to be her is a good image boost ahead of tour time, although pre-sale sign-ups have shown whether or not she performs she is set. I am eating so good with concerts, last year Gaga this year Beyonce.

January 10, 2023 at 1:51 pm #1205231200I listen to a lot of music, I probably have listened to Anti-Hero once on the radio tbh. While, I heard SZA’s song once, and have revisited Kill Bill many times afterward of my own volition. I simply have never been overly interested in Swift. She doesn’t do anything bad, but I do think her songwriting is overrated. Her songwriting is good don’t get me wrong but I think her being heralded as the goddess of songwriting is too much, especially when I don’t think she is much better of a songwriter than other female pop stars who write their own music – Mariah, Gaga, Madonna, Janet, Lorde, SZA, etc. I also am tired of her underdog narrative she keeps singing about, she is on top of the world, breaking every record this is not 2016-2018, she has won. Idk I guess that is my I don’t like anti-hero that much. Midnights is a very good album, and in a 8-10 slot lineup with absolutely get an AOTY nomination, but she is not winning – Folklore is Taylor’s strongest AOTY winning album and that was after Fiona, Abel, Gaga all got cut. In order for her to win again she needs to make her best album to that point. At this rate, after listening to Midnights once over for the first time I rank her albums as this (this is my opinion):
- Folklore – (AOTY winner, 5 nominations, lost PVA)
- 1989 – (AOTY winner, 10 nominations)
- Fearless – (AOTY winner, 8 nominations)
- Red – (AOTY nominee, 4 nominations, lost CA)
- Evermore – (AOTY nominee, sole nomination)
- Speak Now – (no GF nominations, 3 nominations)
- Midnights
- Reputation – (1 nomination)
- Lover – (3 nominations)
- Self Titled
November 16, 2022 at 1:26 pm #1205156692I actually am not as mad at this years nominees compared to last year. I would be fine with anyone winning besides BTS based on the videos, but I truly think Woman is the best and deserves the accolade.
ReplyNovember 16, 2022 at 1:24 pm #1205156687Based on personal taste I would like Beyonce to win all her R&B nominations, but I would be satisfied with 2/3. If she only wins 1 or 0 I will be crying into a pillow. These 3 songs are some of my favorites of hers
ReplyNovember 15, 2022 at 11:07 am #1205153852Yes but Doja was legit just nominated as a solo act in Rap Performance for a top 10 hit so I think she still qualifies as a rapper. She also got 2 rap nominations last year as well.
Doja: – 16 nominations total
GF – 7 nominations
Pop – 5 nominations
Rap – 3 nominations
MV – 1 nomination
TBH not that big of a difference between the two.
November 15, 2022 at 9:16 am #1205152885the megan disrespect is horrifying, though I love that Doja has 3 noms already
