That was assuming both Renée and Scarlett are in Comedy/Musical. If Renée’s in Comedy/Musical but Scarlett’s in Drama, then obviously Scarlett will win.
what happens if we get a curveball and Marriage Story goes comedy and both of them end up in comedy with Charlize lolOctober 18, 2019 at 6:49 pm #1203143174
Does anyone here think Marriage Story’s award prospects are wins for Scarlett Johansson in Best Actress and Laura Dern in Best Supporting Actress, but only a nomination for Adam Driver in Best Actor? The reason why I think Adam Driver loses even though he does seem to have the best acting performance in Marriage Story according to people who have seen it, is that Joaquin Phoenix is overdue and will win over Driver. Leaving Marriage Story to win only the two actress categories. I’ve already said why I think Scarlett will win Best Actress, but basically because Charlize and Renee have already won (particularly for Renee who will likely not be in a BP nominated film), and Scarlett has the commercial and critical pedigree to warrant a BA win at some point in her career, and that seems to be now. Moreover, Scarlett is all over the map this year – two BP contenders and Infinity War. Her success is multi-faceted.
as much as it saddens me to think Adam won’t win. This is definitely a possibility especially considering Dern and Johansson haven’t won and are potentially in 2 bp nominees
I would say it all comes down to if the overdue narrative is strong enough for Joaquin. Technically, I believe his performance in You Were Never Really Here was more impressive but was snubbed by the academy despite weak competition that year … so how strongly does the academy believe Joaquin is overdue?October 18, 2019 at 4:17 pm #1203143061
I just feel like people are 100% sold on Phoenix and think they’re is no way he’ll lose because his film is out right now and Driver’s isn’t. After seeing both films, I can see a scenario where either sweep but I’m leaning towards Driver.
It’s all pretty up in the air but once we know who wins the GG I would say the path is almost set.
Unless, Netflix and HFPA pulls a curve-ball and puts Marriage Story in comedy which will make things extra complicatedOctober 17, 2019 at 4:24 pm #1203141747
I’m curious how much of Adam’s other work you’ve seen because I’ve seen everything he’s done and his work in Patterson and Hungry Hearts especially is absolutely magnificent. There definitely is a reason why Scorcese said that he is “one of the best, if not the best, actors of his generation.”
Just shows you can have the same haircut, same physical weight yet completely disappear and make every character distinct and believable. He’s not known as a chameleon actor but, his body of work can attest that he should be.
His range is fking amazing, in MS it seems he has a chance to demonstrate that and infuse a marriage of character elements from his past roles. His douchey charisma in This is Where I Leave You and Frances Ha. And comedy chops from Girls and The Dead Dont Die. And his introverted intensity in Paterson and the emotional explosiveness and drive in Hungry Hearts.October 17, 2019 at 2:46 pm #1203141637
Darlings, Nose is being outacted by Johansson in his shared scenes. I can smell it. He’s not winning against Joke. And that’s sad, because Clownery is a disgusting mess, but the clown will win.
they’ve intentionally not spoiled all of his oscar worthy scenes. Don’t you worry, your opinion will change when you actually see Marriage StoryOctober 17, 2019 at 7:46 am #1203141001
I know it’s just a trailer, but Adam Driver will not win an Oscar for this. Joaquin might lose, but NOT over Driver! https://youtu.be/bK19jmrtWUM
alright expert you better buy yourself a lottery ticket and make some money off of your psychic ability to see 100% into the future lolOctober 16, 2019 at 5:17 pm #1203140230
I’ve said it and I’ll say it again. Bohemian Rhapsody’s success at the Globes last year hurts Joker. If the HFPA start awarding the movie that made the most money every year they’ll lose all prestige.
depends from what pov you look at it. From award pundits and enthusiasts like us on goldderby the HFPA’s Bohemian Rhapsody fever did delegitimise the already fame-hungry show.
However, if you read it from HFPA’s position, Bohemian Rhapsody did win 4 Oscars so perhaps HFPA were not so off the ball.October 16, 2019 at 5:11 pm #1203140216
Rough guess since I’m fairly unfamiliar with what is considered indie Best Picture Booksmart Parasite* The Farewell The Lighthouse Waves** * They rarely nominate foreign language films, but this is a big breakout and Neon gets recognition by them often ** I’m not sure I actually believe Waves is going to get nominated, but I’m unsure what else would. Is Marriage Story indie or not?
First of all. Based on their official criteria for years. Parasite is not eligible, only films that have American directors and/or a American credited lead producer are eligible.
Gothams represent Independent Film and always reference that the eligible films must be made with an economy of means. But, the interpretation seems to be fluid as bigger films like The Departed (Budget: 90M) and Tree of Life (Budget: 32M) all got nominated. The Favourite last year had a budget of 15M and was eligible so Marriage Story’s 18M budget is fine.October 16, 2019 at 3:22 pm #1203140093
Joaquin Phoenix’s performance has become an absolute fan favorites to be honest. I didn’t expect it to be this explosive but it is.
Oh come on stop with this ‘joker is exceeding expectations’ bs.
Joker and Joaquin were always going to be the big names in contention. Comic Book movies have a huge following and Joker is one of the most beloved cbm characters to exist, it’s just fact.
Of course Joaquin was going to be a fan favourite, who else was? Jonathan Pryce playing a pope?? Antonio Banderas in a foreign language film??? COME ON
I’m not hating on Joaquin, imo his performance is the best of the year so far, but all this fakeness about Joker being an unexpected fan favourite when twitter is essentially a cbm moshpit and cbm popularity in general audiences is at an all time high is kinda annoying.October 16, 2019 at 1:54 pm #1203139945
It was nice of Scarlett to ask her dear friend Jeremy to do a bit of PR marketing for her hahaha I’m joking
Basically the lowdown is, Jeremy Renner is having a very public and legal spat with his wife whom he divorced. There’s a lot of big serious accusations each of them have thrown at each other and I guess the user was highlighting the parallels of that with the divorce happening in Marriage Story.
If anything it just bolsters the notion that the academy could really embrace Marriage Story because the film is centred on two people in the industry, and majority of Hollywood is divorced so there is a huge level of relatability and sympathetic emotional connection to the material creating an impetus to vote for it and Driver.October 16, 2019 at 6:12 am #1203139097
Nominations should go to the top 5 performances but let’s not ignore the fact that this category is looking like 4/5 will be white blonde nominees. I’d love to see some diversity in here. It’s not the white actors fault, it’s the fact that there aren’t enough films made with fully rounded poc roles or those films aren’t properly handled for awards contention.October 16, 2019 at 5:36 am #1203138992
I know for a fact Renee Zellweger & Scarlett Johannson are in. Other three would probably be Saoirse Ronan, Cynthia Enrivo & Awkwafina. I have a feeling Alfre Woodard is going to replace one of these three. I’m hearing people say Renee will win but I have my doubts, we MIGHT see an upset.
Charlize is basically in too, I wouldn’t count her out.
