Thank you, mrs. ospencer, my darling. I’m firing Theresa May and I’ll hire you as Prime Minister my dear.
Gosh you’re delightful , sometimes with questionable taste and ever so lightly demented , but delightful nonetheless.
ReplyFebruary 25, 2019 at 11:13 pm #1202795196The Oscars are like that one girlfriend or boyfriend you had , where you know they are bound to let you down again but you keep forgiving them because when they don’t let you down , it’s kind of the most amazing relationship ever.
For every year where an incredible movie does win you get a Crash or Greenbrook or Argo…that are forgotten within a year of release .
And Bohemian Rhapsody for editing …what ????!!!!
February 25, 2019 at 1:16 pm #1202794327It’s not actually that surprising that Colman won , it’s less to do with Close in a film that few voters actually saw and more to do with the fact that Colman was the most buzzed about performance in a film with 10 nominations.

February 11, 2019 at 1:07 am #1202771650I’m so sorry sweetie. That’s just my opinion. I imagine Kacey Musgraves is what a Trumpian person would listen to. So I’m assuming that’s you. Janelle Monae’s album was more innovative, creative, and inspired. When will the Grammys reward that over … “safe”? ROTY/SOTY were a step in the right direction.
That Kacey Musgraves record is more than it appears ,that’s why so many people ( that don’t often listen to country , including myself ) loved it, it showed a different view point , connected with a broader subset of themes and was amazing . Janelle Monae was great too but the Kacey Musgraves album was better in my opinion
My use of the metaphor Trumpian was to highlight the kind of black and white simplistic thinking that goes if I don’t like it then it is crap , rather than trying to view things with more nuance and recognise art is often on a spectrum as is life , sweetie .

February 11, 2019 at 12:58 am #1202771639I feel like Rami has already pulled an Adrian Brody if that makes sense .
The film was not well liked by critics at all and I would also add that while it was very widely seen , I’m not sure if it was really that loved by audiences either, on top of that you add the Singer controversies and I’m really surprised to see Rami sweeping through awards season the way he has!

February 11, 2019 at 12:45 am #1202771632The bland, safe, predictable, choice ALWAYS wins. So congrats to Kacey Musgraves on being mediocre! :claps:
In the golden hour MC score : 89 and truly an incredible album. Just because YOU didn’t like it doesn’t mean it bland or boring . Don’t be so Trumpian !
ReplyFebruary 10, 2019 at 6:50 pm #1202770212A star is born for this year. The performances were serviceable and Gaga can clearly act but I found both Cooper and Elliot particularly cloying and too earnest. Seriously I tried with this film, I even watched it a second time with some friends ( all of us movie buffs) and it played even worse to me the second time around. I found it very shallow ,superficial and melodramatic ….and to me it falls into the dances with the wolves category of films. Movies that play well in their day with audience and critics but age poorly.

January 31, 2019 at 4:12 am #1202756385Combine best actor /actress categories into a single best performance category , do the same with supporting, vote for them like best picture with up to 8 actors (minimum 3) included.
I’m not sure how you’d adress issues around gender bias to ensure it was an equitable representation ….but they’d be solutions …..
January 29, 2019 at 1:27 pm #1202754604I think any director that imbues their vision so willfully and intentionally into the medium that it becomes a work reflective entirely on them, from screenplay to tone, editing and cinematography. Everyone else involved in the film works in service to their vision and not the other way around, in effect making them author of the project.
ReplyJanuary 28, 2019 at 12:25 pm #1202753037Listen overdue for a nomination is not the same as overdue for a win.
Of course not , in the context of how the Oscars work sure.
However , qualitatively you could make the argument that it can be the same thing , depending on context and the actor…..e.g. Lauren Bacall. It can be nuanced.
ReplyJanuary 28, 2019 at 12:00 pm #1202752985Yalitza’s performance in Roma was phenomenal in my opinion, it was naturalistic , empathetic, and at times transcendant. Not everyone can do that , actor or not . Roma could never have worked without her !!
This year is one of the strongest years for best actress!!!
January 27, 2019 at 7:32 pm #1202751858I think the Emily Blunt Oscar snub energized the actors to give her the win at the SAGs.
Agree , I also think as the academy becomes more international , with greater recognition for global cinema , SAG especially is going to be a less reliable predictor of the Oscars. I think Roma and cold war might be an indication of where things are going , not the exception.
January 27, 2019 at 7:18 pm #1202751792Good stuff on the close win, the awards race turned into some kind of bizzare Stan war because a well known pop star ( albeit a pretty solid actor I hope to see in more films, but geez man stans are weird !) was in the race this year, hopefully thats over.
Close is such a gifted performer and the insults hurled at her were just gross , ageist and misogynistic, the very thing someone like Gaga would find reprehensible.

January 26, 2019 at 10:41 pm #1202749900A Madonna biopic would be fascinating, I’m not the hugest fan but the scope and cultural impact of her career ,controversies included would make for interesting cinema especially with the right actress .
