Butler doesn’t give the best performance. Farrell does. And he will win. If not him, Fraser will.
January 10, 2023 at 3:49 am #1205230017I got the chance to see the full season, and I also played through the first and second game.
This is a good adaptation. Just to give a brief review – it expands on certain parts from the first game and recontextualizes the personalities of characters so no one is in the dark about the direction it takes between the two leads played by Pascal and Ramsey and the ambiguous ending which is directly recreated from the game.
The strength of Neil Druckmann is in his character writing which can at times outpace many seasoned movie or TV writers. And it’s something that Mazin, as a TV writer himself, can’t match. So for Mazin to bring in his attention to detail, knack for world-building and atmosphere and Neil to bring in his characters makes for a great marriage of strengths that bolsters the storytelling. It is essentially treading the same ground that other post-apocalyptic television series’ have tread before though, which will potentially be a drawback to more seasoned TV viewers.
Ramsey is the breakout here. She’s at times steely-eyed, hopeful, determined, heartbroken and all-around electrifying in her performance. And she will deserve whatever awards attention she may garner in future. Pascal is essentially delivering a remodeled take on his work in The Mandalorian, his performance is very understated and has a Brolin-type gruffness to it. Still, it does stand very well against Ramsey’s more extroverted charisma.
The pacing of the show does waver. I do wish Mazin and Druckmann just allowed the camera to stay on its beautifully produced world and conjure up more beautiful imagery of the terrifying monsters that the leads encounter, or even just the sparse but masterful sound design that was imbued here, but again, this is a tight 9-episode series, so some liberties have to be taken. Again, a minor quibble.
All in all, it has a strong level of variance between episode so everything is fresh, and that’s what Druckmann wanted. No episode feels the same. The ending is still impactful. Every single character in this show feels real. I do also wonder how they will take steps to implement a series based on the more divisive Part 2 game, but that’s for another time. Excellent series that will convert many a fan of this genre over who didn’t play the games.

December 20, 2022 at 7:59 pm #1205203494Looking at this year’s contenders, I think we will have a repeat of the last two years where the nominees of the SAG lead actor category determined the Oscar lead actor category, so if an outside contender, say Jackman or Mescal upset Cruise at SAG, that’s their outside-chance nomination confirmed.
Look, Cruise is solid in Top Gun but it isn’t a role he plays where he’s significantly transforming himself or acting his pants off, not to mention he’s soured himself somewhat amongst the younger actors of the actor branch who also oversee the acting nominations, so an upset nom at SAG and eventually the Oscars is a possibility.
December 18, 2022 at 10:49 am #1205199840I’m not so fond of PTA as a person or even DiCaprio, but to call either of them overrated is quite the exaggeration, particularly PTA. He’s perfectly rated, and he’s an all-time great. This is coming from someone who, as I said, finds PTA problematic.
The guy is potentially the most talented auteur in America at the moment, and he’s also a terrific director of actors so DiCaprio is probably set to pick up another Lead Actor Oscar if this news is true
ReplyDecember 12, 2022 at 6:09 am #1205189830Pretty sure Banshees and Farrell will take a lot of main show awards this season… just seems like that type of year for McDonagh and Farrell. And they richly deserve it.
Kind of disappointed Aftersun and its lead, another Irish actor and a relative newcomer to film in Paul Mescal was not put into consideration in any of the main categories but oh well. A lot of the underacted performances/restrained films seemed to have been snubbed which I suspect will not be the case at the BAFTAs/Oscars.
February 12, 2022 at 1:23 am #1204797880Dame Jane Campion is winning. Simple.
That’s definitely looking likely at this point!
February 12, 2022 at 12:58 am #1204797874What’s the probability of PTA sneaking in for Best Director to everyone here? I know that PTA has a very strong reputation amongst the Academy, but he, and his films as well, do have a reputation for being rather auteur friendly, and that demographic isn’t very populated in the modern Academy. But the appeal of a film like Licorice Pizza in terms of setting and story can’t be denied. Is it possible that PTA could get enthusiasm votes off of that?
February 12, 2022 at 12:55 am #1204797872Is it just me, or has Best Actress been way stronger this year? I won’t mind any of this nominees winning except Bardem, but this feels like the most uninspiring acting category this year.
For the former part of the 21st century, Actress has been stronger. That’s started to reverse since the 2010s. Many uninspired and bland picks in Actress this past 12 years, even in terms of winners.
Best Actor has been where its at in terms of performance for at least the past 10 years now.
February 8, 2022 at 6:27 am #1204786955I’m sorry Kenneth Branagh’s direction on Belfast is absolutely… nothing special. He did not deserve to get nominated (in my opinion), and there are several I’d take in that category who didn’t get nommed over him.
ReplyApril 25, 2021 at 8:51 am #1204221121I know a lot of people think I’m cuckoo or over doing it but from what I’ve been taught, calling out such comments is the first step to erasing such mentality.
Again, I didn’t say anything racist. Andra Day will not read that, nor would she give a damn if she did.
April 25, 2021 at 8:44 am #1204221100Day-Lewis has a wider voice, accent and general character range, although Hopkins is far more naturalistic.
As someone above said, for most of Day-Lewis’ post 2000s work, you can feel the performer-y element in his work even though he is extremely method as an actor and wants to live and breathe his characters. Hopkins has a more classical feel as a performer, tends to find truth in his character from the people/things around him and his character’s personal circumstances rather than full on transforming into his character like DDL does.
DDL’s performances in the 20th Century were a lot like Hopkins’ in general in a lot of ways – more understated and naturalistic.
Depends on what you want really – both are among the greatest actors ever, and both give two of the greatest performances of the 21st Century (There Will Be Blood, The Father).
ReplyApril 25, 2021 at 8:37 am #1204221078I don’t need a racist like you or wattswhatever to tell me if I’m ‘okay’ or not.
You need help from someone close to you to see that not everyone you encounter is a racist. Especially when they don’t regard a Black actress’s work as superior to a White one.
And this is coming from someone who likes both Andra and Viola. The latter deserves a win, sure. But what I’m saying is that these two don’t deserve it more than Mulligan.
April 25, 2021 at 8:20 am #1204221051Ignoring racist retorts is nothing new here and that has everything to do with the owners being white.
There’s the answer to my question – you’re not okay.
April 25, 2021 at 7:49 am #1204220967Reported. Waiting to see if any action is taken or the white folks here will ignore it like they usually do.
What does this have to do with the owners being white? You okay?
