With Taylor in the game, there really won’t be room for filler nominees like Camila, Selena, Halsey, or Justin.
Dua, GaGa, Harry, Post, & Taylor are more than likely locks.
But Harry has never even been nominated for a Grammy, with one direction or by himself. There is always a new person who hasn’t been nominated before who makes the pop category. But I don’t think he’s getting in over Camilla. I’m not really a fan of either, but at least Camilla has some Grammy history.July 24, 2020 at 8:37 am #1203599789
Well, Pop Vocal is set.
Chromatica, Lady Gaga
Fine Line, Harry Styles
folklore, Taylor Swift
Future Nostalgia, Dua Lipa
Hollywoods Bleeding, Post Malone
This is probably close. But I’d substitute Camilla cabello’s romance for Harry styles album.July 24, 2020 at 8:31 am #1203599759
If I were a Pitchfork critic I would give Folklore a solid 7.8.
So basically Taylor called up Jack Antanoff and said “I need to have my Norman Fucking Rockwell moment”, and they half way delivered. Some of the lyricism and melodies are very pretty. All of these songs are good but none of them blew me away. There is no song poppy enough to become a chart smash, and there is no song beautiful enough to become an indie classic.
Sometimes I am able to sink into the somber mood of this album, but then she makes some childish rhyme with a bubble gum pop cadence and it takes me out of the moment and completely reminds of which artist I am listening to. She has certain pop impulses that she just wasn’t able to shed and that break the mood of the album for me. I don’t think Folklore will have a lot of replay value for me, outside of a few songs like Mirrorball, Cardigan, and Seven.
For sad/chill vibes indie songstress type albums this year, Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher is my favorite by miles.
This album walks a line between maturity and accessibility that makes it very baity for both critics and Grammy voters. I do see the Metacritic score settling in the high 80’s, an over-performance IMO. I could see this album winning pop-vocal since Taylor is a huge star, it’s probably better than the other contending albums, and it’s also in a different lane while all the bubble gum albums will split votes.
As for her odds in AOTY, I have no idea what is going to happen but I think the most likely scenario is that she gets nominated but loses, stealing votes from Fiona and helping The Weeknd.
2nd most likely scenario is that this album falls off the charts quickly and the panel decides to snub her to avoid the backlash of giving her a third win.
3rd most likely scenario is that the album wins AOTY. I am really hoping this does not happen, the album is not strong enough to be an AOTY winner let alone a third time AOTY winner.
Perfect synopsis. But then again I felt the same way when I heard lover for the first time. Folklore might eventually grow on me, like lover did. Folklore is very similar to Norman f Rockwell. Not too pop radio friendly.November 20, 2019 at 11:52 pm #1203194196
If Ariana gets anything it will be pop vocal album. Billie’s music doesn’t sit well with me, she has a whispery voice. Ariana’s album was much more pop, radio friendly, and easier to understand. And it was much better than Sweetener.November 20, 2019 at 11:33 pm #1203194187
I really think Ariana will take this years album of the year. I think she will be this years Bruno Mars. TUN was a winter album and some of the ballads on the album like needy and imagine were so melancholic and soothing to listen to. I just picture myself being some where cold and desolate near a fireplace with the music playing lol.November 20, 2019 at 11:18 pm #1203194170
I think they wanted to make it harder to predict who would win the genre categories. Because normally if you had an album of the year or record of the year nomination you would of won the genre album, or genre vocal performance. By putting 8 nominations in the general fields, it makes it harder to guess who will win the genre category.November 20, 2019 at 9:31 am #1203192363
She said she cried when red didn’t win album of the year. And when speak now was snubbed for aoty she was upset. And she didn’t attend 2019 when reputation was snubbed for aoty. She comes across as a bit entitled sometimes.November 20, 2019 at 9:23 am #1203192331
I doubt Taylor will even attend in 2020. I’m pretty sure she hates when she gets snubbed for album of the year. Because she’s used to winning them.November 20, 2019 at 9:15 am #1203192278
Boyfriend was actually a great song. I’m not surprised it was nominated.November 15, 2019 at 9:54 am #1203180858
Yes, Ariana Grande copied a tune from the Sound of Music. I can already see this song being robbed in Best Pop Solo and ROTY.
Not really copied, because the sound of music/My favorite things writers were credited as songwriters on 7-rings. But she also did get criticism for copying two other rappers “flow” or something like that on 7-rings. Which they did not get credit for. I think it was Soulja boy, and another female rapper.November 15, 2019 at 9:49 am #1203180847
I’m pretty sure Lizzo will get a BNA nomination. I won’t be shocked if Billie Eilish gets snubbed completely.November 15, 2019 at 6:57 am #1203180635
Bold prediction: Grande misses out on Pop Solo nom with “7 Rings” and only received Pop Vocal Album nom (in the Pop field that is).
You beat me to it. 7 rings was not her best. I was mad to hear that she submitted 7 rings for pop vocal. She should of submitted TUN.November 15, 2019 at 6:49 am #1203180609
Can someone please tell me(if her submissions were real) why did Ariana grande submit 7-rings over TUN for pop solo and record of the year? 7 rings wasn’t her best vocal performance, it was too self indulgent, she just attempts to half-rap. It also received some negative reviews from critics, as being a misfire on the album. While I think TUN was a beautiful uptempo ballad.August 24, 2019 at 7:09 am #1203037413
I didn’t really like this album. Though I’m not a swift stan, I did like 1989 and most of reputation. I just felt these songs were not catchy or listener friendly. I think she needs to go back to Max Martin.August 24, 2019 at 6:56 am #1203037386
Not true. If she pulls it off, I’ll gain mad respect for her. The reason I’m not a fan, is because I don’t see her as a true artist. She isn’t a songwriter or producer. She has no artistry in her work. Her music videos are always commercial and boring. She’s no different than Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. She just has more appeal. If she proves herself as a songwriter, I’ll definitely change my mind about her and have more respect for her. I always respect true artists whether I like them or not. I’m not a fan of Billie for example, but I can at least appreciate her sense of artistry.
Well Ariana may not be a great songwriter, you can’t deny she’s a great vocalist which isn’t that supposed to be the most important part? Taylor Swift can write songs, but she doesn’t come close to having the vocal prowess of Ariana grande. Thank u next imo was a much better album than lover, much more approachable, and much more easy to listen to. Taylor is a poet yes, but sometimes I just feel like she reading a novel when she’s singing. Ariana is a vocal chameleon, and has great variance in her tone. Hence why she’s able to do unbelievable musical impressions of other singers. I still believe she’s arguably the best female vocalist in the under 30 age group at the moment.
