I just finished watching BP:WF and we really played ourselves by not predicting Bassett for a nomination pre – nomination. The consensus is that she is winning because of narrative and that makes me believe that people in these forums haven’t seen the film. She is truly magnificent , her delivery of the line “ your brother is with the ancestors” alone was enough to make a case for why she deserved to be nominated and that’s just the first two minutes of the film. The whole funeral sequence followed by the UN meeting, its literally clip after clip for her which comes to a climatic peak in her Big Oscar scene ( you all know which one, that’s how brilliant she is)
I really hope she wins, she has the performance plus the narrative.
January 24, 2023 at 10:03 am #1205263623Can we talk about how any white actress in Michelle Yeoh’s shoes would be sweeping. She is the lead of the best picture frontrunner that got in everywhere it could realistically get, she has the narrative, the performance and the strength of her film to back it up, let’s not forget that her film was a true box office hit, but she is still going to lose to Blanchett who has 2 Oscar’s. What’s more sad is that a couple years from now, Cate is going to be in another film where her performance will once again be heralded as the undeniable best performance of the decade meanwhile Yeoh will probably not get nominated again ( Just ask Angela Bassett, she went from oscar nomination to waiting by the phone for 18 months for another opportunity )
January 24, 2023 at 8:57 am #1205263219My biggest issue with Andrea’s nomination is Did academy voters actually watch To Leslie? Seems to me Frances Fisher called all her famous friends and got them to vote for her and ofcourse the white actresses in contention were left unharmed. Where was this energy when Tessa Thompson amd Ruth Negga gave outstanding perfomances for Passing, i know its a subjective opinion but Tesss was surely better than Atleast three best actress nominees last year Chastain included, do not even get me started on Negga. Where were the woke white feminist when Alfre Woodard gave an undeniably fantastic perfomance? Why is it that black women are always fighting for the last spot?
January 24, 2023 at 6:11 am #1205261542The Woman King shut out sends a clear message to black actresses, if you are not playing a maid, a tortured black woman in the slave era or a renowned musician who was somehow abused and addicted to drugs then do not expect to be nominated in lead.
January 18, 2023 at 9:25 am #1205250703The way i am absolutely terrified that Angela’s path to oscar gold will hit a roadblock tomorrow when she gets snubbed for Bafta. Her and Kerry are neck to neck that if she misses any precursor i think she loses.
January 13, 2023 at 11:25 am #1205241386In over 90 years of the Academy, only one person submitted as lead has been pushed down to supporting, its not going to happen again so soon. Either Michelle gets nominated in lead or she misses altogether, we forget that in that same year Viola Davis was in nominated in lead although she had 26 minutes in her film ( and her film wasnt even nominated in best picture). When a veteran performer gets campaigned in lead, they are always considered in that category. The category confusion plus the SAG miss, things are not looking good for Michelle.
Even in the slim chance she gets nominated in supporting, Angela and Kerry have already solidified their status as frontrunners that i doubt she sneaks in a win.
January 13, 2023 at 4:26 am #1205240814I know Goldderby likes to come up with theories and possible explanations as to why some people miss nominations but I have to ask, could it be possible that Michelle Williams missed SAG because SAG voters did not like her performance? Could it be that simple? Category confusion has rarely ever stopped any veteran performer from getting nominated at SAG and even winning. Viola Davis literally just won for a 26 minute performance ( and yes she was absolutely and undoubtedly LEAD in Ma rainey) . I am actually predicting her to miss, when a Steven Spielberg film makes ensemble and scores an additional nom for supporting actor and a veteran like Michelle misses it essentially spells trouble.
January 12, 2023 at 9:26 am #1205238951The Zendaya underestimation all season long has been puzzling to say the least. Before season two aired most users in these forums were predicting her to not get nominated again, she was supposed to be a one and done winner. Then of course there was the delusion that she won because of narrative alone in a BLM year and the two off episodes of Euphoria missing award consideration was a bad sign for her. When season two aired and essentially became a global phenomenon people still doubted her getting in- go back to those forums pages and alot of people were saying Laura Linney was the only lock for a nomination. When Euphoria over perfomed with nominations, the next argument was that she was not lead enough ( which I now find funny because after finally watching Yellow Jackets , Melanie Lynskey was even more supporting than her) . She was not going to win The Globe because she was the sole nom of her show and now the lack of an ensemble nom for Euphoria is suddenly the final nail to her winning SAG. As has been proven time and time again, Zendaya has never been carried by the streangth her show and did anyone really expect Euphoria to make ensemble?I do believe that her and Coolidge are in a tight race, any of them can win but to count her out so quickly is unreasonable.
January 12, 2023 at 5:49 am #1205238605I think some users here had earlier pointed out that while Condon has everything going for her, she just didnt feel like a winner ( i hate saying that because what does it even mean, right?) but lets take a look at previous winners, Ariana Debose was doing everything from acting to singing to dancing – Academy bait to the T. Yuh Jung Youn was the heartbeat of her film, she had the narrative, the perfomance and everyone was rooting for her, we all wanted to see her win. Laura Dern had narrative( she really should not have won) Regina King had narrative and was basically awards catnip at the point, the emmys simply couldnt get enough of her and the oscars were just waiting to award her, and of course she was fantastic. The list could go on and on. One thing most of these winners had in common was that they were the sole focus of their films, all the awards attention of their films settled on them. The thing about the supporting categories is that when a narrative settles it almost always go all the way through.
with that said I really doubt Angela will win, the academy hates Marvel movies, most of them believe that they have ruined Cinema and i believe that will be be Angela biggest hurdle.
All in all, I really hope she wins because she has been utterly fantastic in her work across film and television- i still think about how amazing she was in AHS – Coven( the emmy should have been hers too). You just never know when these black legends will get another opportunity to be in tue awards conversation.January 11, 2023 at 8:31 am #1205236120I can believe this is happening. I used to pray for times like these

I am genuinely so happy for you. Not just because she is probably winning but because she is winning for playing a black queen in a marvel movie, the stars have aligned
January 11, 2023 at 8:00 am #1205235870i cannot tell you guys how absolutely thrilled i am for Jonathan Banks. He has given the best perfomance by an actor in a supporting role since Breaking Bad and he should have atleast won an emmy for either BB or BCS .
December 21, 2022 at 7:29 am #1205204012The way Taylor swift’s campaign for both categories are about to end in a few hours!!
I love her but she isn’t making any shortlist for either Carolina and ATW
December 19, 2022 at 9:46 am #1205200972Did I miss something?
when did EEAO stans become insufferable? Have I been reading the same threads? cause a part from the usual and expected excitement that has come with the movie recent sweep at the critics awards, most Stans have been reasonable.
December 14, 2022 at 8:26 am #1205194352Pundits choice awards keep getting worse every year, 10 directors, they need to get serious. The way they keep on sabotaging their credibility every year is amusing to say the least
December 12, 2022 at 10:25 am #1205191020Yeah, Jennifer Coolidge is winning again, and rightfully so. Give her all the awards!!!!
