If Years and Years breaks through in the US when it eventually airs on HBO, it has major potential for Limited Series category nominations. I believe it’s airing in June/July, so it has time to build a cult audience. It’s incredible. Emma Thompson and Russell Tovey are my stand-outs so far, but there are some great performances by some lesser known actors as well. It’s shocking and addictive and already making a splash in the UK.June 7, 2019 at 4:06 pm #1202927577
Jonas Brothers are getting solid reviews… with a hit song that already hit number one and has longevity that should see it through the summer, I can’t help but think they will get a few nominations. I could see this as the obvious Pop Duo/Group winner, likely Pop Album nomination and maybe ROTY/SOTY.May 31, 2019 at 5:04 am #1202917632
Katy Perry did not hold back on this single. It seems like a battlecry for her career and it’s her best since Teenage Dream in my mind. It’s catchy, summery, anthemic and empowering. I hope it takes off and I do hope she ends up with a Grammy. This feels more like a Pop Solo winner than thank u, next. I think radio will really grab onto it. Plus she has the comeback storyline.
Camila and Mark’s song is super fun too. I don’t see it being huge, but I’ve already played it a few times.
Cardi B’s new one seems like a throw away. Her fans have been waiting for it and it’s fine, but seems more like a deep cut on an album.
Miley’s album is more like Dead Petz… It’s fun, but will disappear.
Two under the radar songs that are solid are King Princess’s and Tove Lo’s new ones. Also, Sleater-Kinney’s St Vincent produced single and Rosalia’s are great!
It’s a good new music Friday!May 17, 2019 at 11:49 am #1202897816
Big day for new music…
Tyler, the Creator’s new one is fantastic and has a lot of buzz. It hit number 1 on Apple Music, outpacing DJ Khaled.
With that… DJ Khaled has a few tracks on that album that could contenders, the SZA one and the Nipsey/John Legend ones in particular. The video for the SZA track is also pretty epic.
Halsey’s new song and video will keep her relevant throughout the summer and maybe lead to a full album before the season runs out.
The National’s reviews are good enough for Alternative Album nomination, but I think it’s Vampire Weekend’s to win and they’ll have the AOTY alternative / rock push
Carly Rae’s reviews are really good, but the album won’t have the commercial success needed to get into the Grammy’s and the reviews aren’t CRAZY good to push her like Lorde, Kacey or Janelle.
Megan Thee Stallion is a major BNA contender and could get into some rap categories.
Chance the Rapper’s new song… meh.
Lewis Capaldi… not enough buzz to breakthrough.
Maluma… a really fun latin summer album.
The Black Keys, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen all released album tracks, but none are really going to push them into commercial success yet. Their albums need to get great reviews or sell well to make an impact with the Grammys.
Rammstein… not my thing, but maybe big enough to get some Rock field love.
Old Town Road video solidifies it as a contender in a few categories and should keep it at number one for a few more weeks.
I Don’t Care’s video… meh.May 16, 2019 at 3:01 am #1202895945
Mavis Staples has a new album this month that will definitely be an Americana contender. She could go the way of John Prine and just stay in the field categories, but could have potential to cross over to AOTY if it’s as well received as it’s buzzed to be. It started a preview streaming online today. She’s definitely more accepted with a younger audience than most aging Americana singers. She still does the festival circuit.May 16, 2019 at 2:57 am #1202895940
Yeah, like I said, nominations are very likely now that it’s proven to be a blockbuster of a song and should continue throughout the summer with the release of what looks like a solid video coming on Friday. I could see ROTY, BNA (if he has a follow-up hit), Rap/Sung or Country Duo/Group or Pop Duo/Group, Remixed Recording for Diplo and Music Video (if the still is any indication it’ll be well shot and has some Tarantino vibes). Winning is a whole other situation though, the buzz will definitely die off by next year, but it’s hard to ignore that people love this song and it’s not just a joke or viral song. It’s an actual hit.
Old Town Road won’t win any Grammys this January. Period.May 15, 2019 at 4:09 pm #1202895510
I’d love to see Carly Rae climb up as a critical darling and get some Grammy love. She VERY likely won’t as there’s no committee for pop and I don’t see her touching the general field, but one can dream.May 15, 2019 at 4:06 pm #1202895507
If only Truth Hurts by Lizzo was eligible because it is on its way to big time summer hit.
As for Old Time Road… it has now blocked Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes from hitting number one. It has the kind of buzz of a Despacito. It will likely get nominations within categories like ROTY or Rap/Sung, but probably will have the buzz die off by February too much to actually win, but it’s hard to ignore what a massive hit it is. AND… dare I say, it’s not actually horrible for a viral hit.May 13, 2019 at 3:44 pm #1202892600
I really think the committee will block A Star is Born soundtrack. It would really feel like a rehash of what was celebrated last year. The album really wasn’t what was so huge, it was Lady Gaga at the Oscars and Shallow. The album sold well, but it’s like Greatest Showman… it’s not really a great album, but people go out and buy it to relive the movie without actually watching the movie. Lady Gaga should release something before the end of the summer and this talk of it getting in AOTY will likely fizzle. It already feels like ages ago that it was out and I really feel people got exhausted of Shallow by the end of the season, which is the song people think of when they think of that movie. This is not a blast on Gaga or the awards it received, it would just feel VERY lacklustre in 8-9 months time.
I feel like it’s between these 12 so far…
The Black Keys
Chance the Rapper
Vampire WeekendMay 13, 2019 at 12:19 pm #1202892350
Mendes hit number 2 on the Hot 100. I feel this song will have longevity if he continues to promote it and it’s not a one-off single that fizzles. It seems like a summer radio grower and could likely land him in the SOTY and Pop Vocal Performance this year if the momentum grows. People just really like the kid, he has a voice, he’s inoffensive, but his songs keep getting a bit better.
Bieber / Sheeran need to release the video this week or it could lose the buzz quickly. It could also be a big radio hit this summer if they promote it. Shawn Mendes definitely does a better job working the promo machine than either of them, so I expect his generic white-guy pop song to do better.May 12, 2019 at 4:59 am #1202889863
Jamila Woods’ Legacy! Legacy! is getting incredible reviews (92 on MC after 8 reviews) and is definitely going to be an R&B contender. The panel will eat her up. Technically she could be a BNA contender despite her last album being a critical success. She has yet to break through on a commercial level, but she’s a sure thing on the critic lists at the end of the year.May 11, 2019 at 5:31 am #1202888691

It sounds like Ed and Justin’s song could be a family-friendly summer bop. I expect it to be a hit from the clip I heard, along the lines of Can’t Stop the Feeling and Happy. Yeah… it’s for Angry Birds 2… but I feel it’ll be forgotten quickly that it was for the movie and continue on through the summer. Grammy’s tend to take a break from artists, like Ed Sheeran, after they had a big success and I feel like they did that with Divide. I think they’ll go back to feeling OK about rewarding him in the General categories and it’s an easy Visual Media / Pop Duo nomination.
