I like that she’s returning to what she’s known for and it’s definitely very catchy and very gay. It’ll be a moderate hit, but her fanbase is aging and aren’t as obsessive as they once were. It won’t get the streaming numbers it needs to be massive. I’d love to be wrong! It’s a fun song and I find a lot of music lately is missing that fun side, that’s why Lizzo took off… she is just pure fun. Looking at other successful pop artists they’re a little more low-key, like Billie and Ariana. Their music is great, but they don’t have these big fun anthems that make you feel good.January 13, 2020 at 4:06 pm #1203282520
Another one of these know-it-alls that often gets proven wrong when submissions roll around and then they go quiet. One thing you can’t count on, is a sure-thing disqualification in BNA. Look at Lizzo this year… if there’s no documentation of the rule, then it can be bent very easily, they ignored rules for Lizzo this year that are even on their website. Don’t be surprised that if Roddy Ricch continues to have a great year, that they find a way.
There’s not.January 13, 2020 at 3:44 pm #1203282432
I’m pretty sure there is a consideration around lead versus feature in the performance categories. Cardi was a lead on her single when she was nominated. I might be making this up entirely or it might be outdated, but I’m pretty sure if you’re nominated as a feature and don’t win and you fit within the other rules, you’re good… but again, you all will argue this until October 2020 and the truth is his breakout year is this year and it’s unfortunate if he’s disqualified and only shows the award rules are holding this category back.January 13, 2020 at 3:21 pm #1203282397
I’m pretty sure the rules are you can’t have over 30 songs or 3 albums before the eligibility year, so he’s good there, as only two mixtapes were before the eligibility period. His nominations this year are for a feature on Rap Performance, Rap/Sung Performance and Rap Song, so he SHOULD be fine there if he doesn’t win. I believe you have to be the lead artist in a performance category to be disqualified. It’s really subjective though, so who knows until we get the submission lists in October. For now, I’d say it’s OK to consider him a contender for BNA until we know for sure by him winning at the Grammys, then again after submissions are leaking in October. It’ll be a year of people debating it though… and really it’s a toss up until we know for sure.December 30, 2019 at 3:10 pm #1203254418
Did The Outsider get optioned for a season 2? I read it was a miniseries.December 30, 2019 at 7:29 am #1203253974
I’m just catching up on Watchmen. It definitely is a stand-out from the year, but I’m unsure if the Emmys will jump on it. HBO has Succession, Big Little Lies and Westworld. The New Pope likely has to move to Drama Series now like Big Little Lies. HBO also has a bunch of miniseries that could be in contention: The Outsider, The Undoing, The Plot Against America, I Know This Much is True, Perry Mason. Some of those will likely not be released in time, but that’s still a lot. I feel it’ll get The Leftovers treatment.December 30, 2019 at 6:01 am #1203253884
I think he’s technically eligible, he only had two mix tapes before this album and was only nominated as a featured artist and song writer. Who knows though…
Is Roddy eligible for BNA? I know he has 3 nominations this year, but they are all features, so maybe there’s a loophole for him. Tierra Wack was eligible despite getting a nod last year.December 29, 2019 at 8:10 am #1203253184
It’s really looking like The Box, Roxanne and Circles are in a tight competition for number 1 once the Christmas songs are gone. I don’t like that Roxanne song. I’d like to see a new number 1 though, so I’ll go with hopefully The Box keeps rising next week. It’ll be an easy number 1 for Bieber for at least a week unless Yummy REALLY bombs. There’s too much hype being built for this new song, so it’ll get the initial streams and sales before we find out if it’s a Heartless or if it builds back up like a Lose You to Love Me.December 27, 2019 at 10:30 am #1203251693
I think with what I assume to be a low point week next week and even lower the next, Bieber can hit number 1 even with a single that isn’t great, just based on buzz. It would be similar to The Weeknd or Selena Gomez.December 27, 2019 at 9:48 am #1203251668
What’s going to be number 1 after this week, before Yummy comes out…
Circles, Roxanne, Memories?
I think it’s going to be 1. Roxanne 2. Circles 3. Memories
Other songs in the top 10…
Futsal Shuffle 2020, The Box, Good as Hell, Falling, Dance Monkey, BOP, Someone You Loved
Bieber and Rihanna in January might spice it up a bit.December 11, 2019 at 4:48 pm #1203232583
Predicted to get number one over Circles by a small margin and Lucid Dreams is ranking high (sometimes predictions underestimate songs with a lot of streams or ones that are building throughout the week). I bet it’s still between Juice WRLD and Mariah with Mariah taking a larger margin lead than the prediction numbers. A long deserved number one. Memories is continuing to grow and could be a number one after AIWFCIS runs its course if nothing else new comes out, which would set it up for a Pop Duo/Group nomination. Glad to see streaming is getting holiday songs up there with Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree coming in at 4.December 11, 2019 at 10:36 am #1203231846
Mariah just released the signed CD single with digital download for $5, plus she’s pushing her Amazon mini-doc. Good as Hell is a worthy number 1, but I don’t see it beating out Mariah this week, it was on the downward trend before the new video, while Mariah just leaped up the charts and will continue to. I would expect number 1 this week, but we should have predictions tonight!December 10, 2019 at 12:33 pm #1203229486
It’s looking like Harry Styles has the critics mostly on his side, it looks like it’s a bigger critical success than his previous album. I see him being a contender next year with the right submissions and if he can build any commercial buzz. Unfortunately he’s releasing this year, as year-end lists won’t help him next year.November 23, 2019 at 7:36 am #1203198510
Beck and Coldplay both put out albums with average reviews (better reviews than normal for Coldplay).
I don’t see either selling THAT well unless there’s bundles involved (I cannot wait for them to put some rules on that next year).
I don’t see either being relevant this time next year, but definitely could play in the Alternative and Pop genres.November 12, 2019 at 9:01 am #1203176071
So far the new streaming platforms haven’t really added anything to the Emmy race. The Morning Show is a bit of a dud, despite getting renewed and the other three are forgettable. The Mandalorian is purely entertainment, I don’t see it being an awards magnet. Maybe HBO Max will have some Emmy bait when it launches in May, but if it rolls out shows week-to-week they won’t qualify, but I’m sure they have a plan.
