Good luck with those attacks, dear. Its not catching on.
I think you of all people should watch your mouth more when saying things aren’t going to catch on.

January 17, 2021 at 2:03 pm #1203988387Upon realising I liked Ammonite more than basically every other film this Oscars Race* upon rewatching it, this is what I imagined this thread’s response will be.
*Except Nomadland and Wolfwalkers.

January 16, 2021 at 11:07 pm #1203987512I’m going to be honest, I think trying to read tea leaf patterns isn’t the way we should go. Sometimes, recurrent themes – such as racial identity, activism, how art expresses yourself – just exist. They were made roughly in the same time, with the same cultural background. This is also a year where big budget films that might vary up the lineup either weren’t that good (sorry Tenet), or delayed (Dune).
I know before any precursor nominations this is kinda dull, but keep your wits sharp. Focus on what it seems like the voters are
- Watching (access to screeners, priority for voters)
- Liking (how are VOTERS [not the general public, remember] responding? Do they have fondness? Is it divisive)
- Recommending to others (thus making them the priority films – word of mouth even in such a highly marketed scene matters)
- Passionate about
Let Me Ask The Thread This – What Films This Oscars Season Will Be The Priority Watches?

January 16, 2021 at 2:15 pm #1203986838I’m having PTSD and freakin that Minari could be completely shut out.. someone talk some sense into me
Know that Minari will gain over time in reputation, and its merits will remain even if the Academy does not recognise them.
I cannot comfort you because I have that same gut feeling too.

January 15, 2021 at 7:28 pm #1203985802Watched One Night In Miami. Really well made movie, I think it’s better directed than expected – feels a lot less boxed in than Ma Rainey’s.
My earlier phase of thinking this was the Best Picture winner might have gone too far, but I think this stands a competitive chance, and I am not predicting a snub. Hell, I might even think Regina King in Director could slip in, given Director seems weak this year.

January 14, 2021 at 2:45 pm #1203983926I will say this – The Trial of the Chicago 7’s weakness is that it’s on Netflix. That is to say – this is a film of comfortable milquetoast platitudes that would do very well with an older “traditionalist” branch’s perspective on cinema, but that branch has also been historically harsh on Netflix. It’s kind of the same problem the Irishman had – the sort of movies “they don’t make any more” plus Netflix equals a compromised campaign.
It’ll probably get too many nominations and (gags) the Original Screenplay win, but to get that Best Picture Netflix needs to make themselves appealing to a set of voters that won’t like that.

January 10, 2021 at 12:06 pm #1203974460I feel kinda ridiculous for doing this but I’m predicting a full minari shutout. I do not believe that the Academy will go for this film – it’s going to be 6th in a lot of categories, and not get the steam to get into picture. I want to be proven wrong, but The Farewell told me don’t trust the Academy. Just as with the farewell, the Globes’ dumbass rules are going to slow precursor momentum.

January 10, 2021 at 12:04 am #1203973539I get the arguments for Mank or One Night in Miami or The Trial of the Chicago 7 missing – the critical passion isn’t there, and they are the sorts of film that would benefit a lot from a critical push.
That having been said … I’m not sure what gets in instead. Minari? A24’s not gotten a best picture nominee since Lady Bird. The Father? Sony pictures classics isn’t that on fire lately, and this could easily just be performances and screenplay. Promising Young Woman? Screenplay and actress is kinder to movies this Provocative with a capital P, but even with an academy that gave Best Picture to Parasite and a scalie romance, I don’t see them going that far.

January 7, 2021 at 12:39 am #1203966923I feel like the Academy’s response being as out of touch to the realities of the world as picking Chicago 7 would be so outdated and tactless that I can see them doing it.
The only thing I have to say is that the old guard who might be harbouring a little bit of that reactionary energy might also not exactly be looking to support a Netflix film.
I am not sold on Chicago 7 being the big response film the Academy will go for. In general, this year doesn’t have a film like Parasite or The shape of water that makes a big, obvious, broadly appealing message with allegory to real issues.
Nomadland is a film about people put in a rough place by a failed system, but it’s not Ken Loach, and is much more a tone piece. I think people saying THIS will be the political response are missing what will appeal to voters – it’s a film headed for a semi traditional cinema release not streaming with a big actress they love, craft quality, and a chance to reward rising talent with Chloe Zhao.
One Night In Miami is specific to an era more so than the message of Chicago 7 – it is about a very specific moment in Black history, culture, and activism. There are elements that suggest areas of no change and recall present day developments, but I would argue it isn’t a candidate primarily pushed on politics.
Da 5 Bloods is the most directly politically engaged film in this year for me. Delroy Lindo’s character is a very blunt but fascinating character piece on what motivates a black Trump supporter. The scene that sticks out for me is a late one, where a donation is received by a Black Lives Matter chapter. For a film that is gory and defined often by bitter resentment of the past and present, the scene of gratitude, support, and community feels so different and so proudly compassionate that it feels rousing to the core.
Da 5 Bloods is a movie that is stylistically divisive and nowhere near as accessible as BlackKklansman, so I don’t think Best Picture is happening, but I wanted to say a piece.

January 5, 2021 at 2:44 pm #1203964743It feels awkward for me to say given that Frances Mcdormand won recently but she really is my favourite performance I’ve seen all year. Reserved, the kind where the weariness of the years can be implied by a gaze or a facial expression. I love this kind of performance.
I think this is a quality year for Best Actress and comfortably better than last year though, so a Carey Mulligan or a Viola Davis win would still be good news to me.

January 3, 2021 at 11:39 pm #1203960904Watched nomadland. It felt really nice liking a movie again. Frances Mcdormand at her best – I get why she won’t win, but I loved her. Felt like a caring movie with heart, and I know that’s kinda basic as a compliment but it felt warm and carefully restrained in a way that made me feel like it wasn’t trauma tourism but empathetic and understanding.
I would love this to win.

January 1, 2021 at 12:04 pm #1203956734I feel like in a better year Mank would perform like First Man and miss above the line only getting technicals despite being considered a golden child candidate beforehand. This year, however, there’s enough of a lack of flashy candidates that I can maybe see a director and supporting actress still happening in nominations, with picture Maybe.

December 29, 2020 at 1:13 am #1203950961acclaimed except where it counts. the box office. So much for being another get out. All that spam for nothing!
Not to be rude, but maybe someone in your life should tell you to think before you speak. Box office in general is unreliable as a metric with the nature of the pandemic and cinema. Also, accusing other people of spam … hypocrisy isn’t a good look.
I’m all for alternative opinions in oscars threads, but this isn’t an opinion, rather a temper tantrum. Do something better with your life.
