August 15, 2022 at 8:01 pm #1205046923Not sure if all of the following films should have won, but they’re my personal favorites:
/1928: The Racket
Reply
/1929: The Hollywood Revue
/1930: The Divorcee
/1931: Cimarron
/1932: It’s a toss-up between Five Star Final and Shanghai Express.
/1933:42nd Street (Little Women would be a very close second)
 Cleopatra
 David Copperfield
 Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
 A Star Is Born
 Jezebel
 The Wizard of Oz
 The Philadelphia Story
 The Maltese Falcon
 The Magnificent Ambersons
 Casablanca
 Double Indemnity
This year is stacked! I’ll choose Spellbound for the Hitchcock-Bergman collaboration.
 It’s a Wonderful Life
Mourning Becomes Electra (this wasn’t even nominated)
 Hamlet
Either Twelve O’Clock High or The Heiress (as different as they are).
 All About Eve
 Quo Vadis
 High Noon
 Julius Caesar
Most of my favorite films from this year were not nominated (Carmen Jones, Sabrina, A Star Is Born, Magnificent Obsession). The only exception being The Country Girl. For me it’s a toss-up between Carmen Jones and A Star Is Born.
 Marty
 The King and I
 Sayonara
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Suddenly, Last Summer (I know it gets a lot of hate). I immensely enjoy Pillow Talk too, one of the best rom-coms ever, in my opinion.

 Judgment at Nuremberg
 Sweet Bird of Youth
 Cleopatra
 Mary Poppins
 Darling

 Chinatown
 The Sunshine Boys
Carrie (honorable mention to Face to Face)
 The Turning Point
Autumn Sonata (Interiors is a very close second)
 The China Syndrome
 Ordinary People
 Only When I Laugh
 Tootsie
 Terms of Endearment

 The Color Purple
 A Room with a View
 Fatal Attraction
 Dangerous Liaisons
 Steel Magnolias
Misery (I still don’t get how it wasn’t nominated)
 The Prince of Tides
 Death Becomes Her
The Age of Innocence (one of the biggest snubs ever)
 Nell
 Leaving Las Vegas

Debra Winger in Terms of Endearment or Ingrid Bergman in Autumn Sonata.

Penelope Cruz in Parallel Mothers or Charlize Theron in Bombshell.
July 28, 2022 at 4:33 pm #1205028189Bassett.
Angela Bassett in What’s Love Gotta Do With It or Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story.
July 28, 2022 at 4:27 pm #1205028175Black Dahlia (2006). I love the cinematography and costume design. The cast is pretty good (Josh Hartnett, Hilary Swank, Scarlett Johansson, Mia Kirshner and special mention to Fiona Shaw and Rose McGowan). As much as I enjoyed seeing Swank and Johansson play their roles, I do think the movie is flawed. Perhaps the problem is in the script/pacing.

ReplyJune 30, 2022 at 3:41 pm #1205000841Helen Hunt wasn’t exactly a surprise. She was the predicted winner although a lot of people thought it could have gone to Judi Dench as well. It was a two way race. Winslet was third in line to win and people thought that she could win only if there was a clean sweep by Titanic although some felt the Academy Members would reward the film at other place and not through newcomer Winslet. Helena Bonham Carter’s chances of a win had evaporated weeks ago after she lost GG to Judi Dench. Christie was #5.
Thank you for your reply! Interesting info.
