And Mo’Nique was never offered the role of Minny in “The Help.” Several actresses were considered, but only Octavia Spencer was offered. She had voiced the part in the audio version of The Help and was a childhood friend of Tate Taylor, the director of the film. The idea of her playing Hattie McDaniel (solely based on her Gone with the Wind role) was a complete assumption based on her quite clearly stating she didn’t accept the role of Minny as she felt it was too stereotypical. Am not sure I can find that clip from her talk show, but I’ll give it a whirl.
