I too think Lupita could pull an upset at SAG but we could also see an upset at the Oscars and I truly don’t think it will be Renee nor Scarlett winning.
I could be wrong but my gut is telling me Cynthia Erivo could pull a HUGE UPSET at the Oscars.January 15, 2020 at 5:39 am #1203285578
I have to agree with the title that THIS OSCAR SEASON IS BORING AS HELL…………I hope we see some upsets because there has been a lot of SNUBS this seasonJanuary 14, 2020 at 5:00 am #1203283421
joker and jojo’s costumes had interesting color stories but over dolemite and rocketman? give me a fucking break, just lazy decisions all around. and joker for makeup? painting on a clown face is the easiest makeup job in existence, it’s like giving your neighborhood kid’s halloween look an oscar nomination, just goes to show you the terrible impacts of this shortened voting period
Exactly! I’m still fuming over these nominations especially Ruth Carter’s snub considering she was the favorite to possibly win!January 13, 2020 at 12:39 pm #1203281936
Why are we at the stage where there has to be a female nominated director each year just for the sake of it? Voters should be choosing the 5 directors that displayed the best direction in each year in their films, irrespective of race and gender. The fact that less female directors have traditionally been hired by studios (same for PoC directors) is a problem with the industry in general, not with the Academy.
You’ve referred to whitewashing. Are you implying that voters are deliberately not nominating PoC performances due to their race, and are deliberately nominating white performers instead? That seems to be the insinuation and there appears to be zero evidence behind it. Could it just be that voters thought the non-PoC performers were better this year? It’s a competitive year and not everybody can get in. Awkwafina, Nyongo and Erivo were all on the cusp of a nomination in their category, Erivo got in, the other two didn’t make it. Simple as that.
The Oscars are not some sort of affirmative action initiative where PoC performances should be nominated just for the sake of it. Just last year two of the four acting winners were non-white (three if you count Malek as being an Egyptian American). This year the major acting contenders happen to be non PoC performers. That doesn’t mean the Academy are racist or are “whitewashing”.
People need to think critically about what they are saying before posting soundbytes online about “Oscars so white” and “whitewashing”. It’s tiring to read and insulting to the performers who were nominated this year.
Some of us have a reason to be upset because that’s the majority of who’s nominatedJanuary 13, 2020 at 10:20 am #1203281456
Thank you. Let MORE of the backlashing continues…..January 13, 2020 at 10:19 am #1203281451
Overall, it’s way better than the lists of GG ,SAG, BAFTA ,and Critic’s Choice Awards. (Edit: for example, the snubs of Antonio Banderas)
SAG nominations are FAR better than GG and BAFTA nomination. Critic’s Choice kinda hit the spot with their nominations so I give them a pass!January 13, 2020 at 9:32 am #1203281275
I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed to get 5/5 in a category lol. What’s frustrating is that a nom for Lupita might’ve reminded people who don’t follow critics and film twitter that great acting in genre horror films exists. It’s not just snooty Academy members who fail to realise this; I would wager a large majority of people automatically associate great acting with straightforward dramas, or at best dramedies. Many who went to see Us were probably not thinking about the acting at all, they were too busy being freaked out. Sad but true.
Very trueJanuary 13, 2020 at 8:15 am #1203281042
These BS nominees. Very happy for Cynthia Erivo and Saoirse Ronan but Academy, for you a$#holes to snub both Awkwafina and critics darling Lupita Nyong’o????? 😡😡😡😡😡😡
Hope the backlashing continues…..January 13, 2020 at 7:41 am #1203280898
Yeap and have a feeling more is comingJanuary 13, 2020 at 6:18 am #1203280213
So you want a majority to be black just because…isn’t that racist? Who cares what color the nominees are? Best performances should be nominated. I didn’t like the Eddie Murphy or Jamie Foxx snubs but the academy always nominated performances from the same few movies they like. Are they lazy? Probably. Racist? Think that’s a stretch
ALL POC not just Blacks. I’m fuming over the snub of Awkwafina
