I will definitely be voting for Sophie Thatcher (young natalie) on my GoldDerby tv award ballot this year. Her performance was deeply felt and affecting to me, particularly in the last 2 episodes.
ReplyMarch 1, 2023 at 8:54 pm #1205328537Hey, I am cautiously optimistic about the removal of the unlimited ballot, I hope that results in shows not getting 5-8 acting noms, spread the wealth!
I was wondering if anyone remembers the year that the unlimited ballot got introduced, and how the nominees changed from the year before to the next year
I also wonder what rule changes that you all feel have caused the best award show improvement.
I think:
1. The 50 percent guest rule.
2. Half the ballots being in reverse alphabetical order
3. The acting winners not being ranked choice voting (went from Peter Dinklage beating Jonathan banks to Tatian Maslany winning)June 18, 2022 at 12:22 pm #1204989165Reservation Dogs everywhere you can!
Especially series, Zahn McClarnon, and Gary Farmer!
Our awards get added to actors accolades on imdb and wikipedia, so why not use our force to boost the careers and of these incredible actors and writers. As a bonus, this show is absolutely deserving too. Might be the best debut comedy season of all time
ReplyFebruary 14, 2021 at 5:29 pm #1204042396As somebody who LOOOOOOOOOOOVES Carrie Coon (she’s up there with Kirsten Dunst as somebody who is just undeniable to me), The Nest might actually be the one occasion where I see why she’s not super in the conversation. She’s fantastic, but her role & the film overall is a bit too oblique. It’s not bad, it just feels like it could be…a bit more. It’s not as good as Martha Marcy May Marlene.
But I’m with you. She should win every dang award yesterday. I saw her on stage twice and man is she electric.
I def see your point of view, and definitely agree that The Nest tended to stop short whenever it seemed like it had something to say. But Coon and Law elevated the hell outta it for me.
I am also a huge Dunst-head. Both need to get the career that will show how they are some of the best of cinema
February 14, 2021 at 4:59 pm #1204042368Always stinks when you see a performance and it ends up being the best of the year and should be winning but its such a small film it wont touch the nomination.
But yea, Carrie Coon in The Nest should be running away with this. She better be allowed to headline a bigger project in the next decade.
And yes you were also fantastic too Jude Law, dont worry
January 15, 2021 at 6:21 pm #1203985756Kingsley Ben-Adir is indeed fricking incredible with power and righteousness that was both subtle and towered over the entire film.
This might be one of the greatest Best Actor years in recent memory. Delroy Lindo, Chadwick Boseman, Riz Ahmed, Steven Yeun, and now Kingsley Ben-Adir have given incredible performances that nail both the subtle and the big moments. I know probably only 2 or 3 of them will actually end up being nominated but I cant remember the last year there were 5 best actor contenders with performances I coudlnt stop thinking about AND actually have a chance of being nominated.

December 30, 2020 at 12:17 pm #1203953505Dare I say Nick Offerman for Parks and Recreation?
He gave the male favorite performance on the show and was the male face of the show. Supporting actor was so hard to break through during the peak of Parks and Rec emmy love (seasons 3 and 4) due to the Modern Family guys. I know Rob Lowe submitted lead in those seasons but I dont think he would have siphoned votes away from Offerman. He might’ve been able to get a lead actor nomination in 2011, 2012, or 2017.
ReplyDecember 30, 2020 at 12:06 pm #1203953490No one told me that Beaver’s Nose was gonna be one of the best tv performances of year!!! A true spectacle in directing and editing. Nicholas Hoult tore through the finale too, playing a full range of emotions while never breaking from the tone of the show. Seriously, this show wouldn’t work if every actor didnt understand perfectly the hyper-specific tone of this show and they do! For that reason I think it should win SAG ensemble.

2) What hyping up every year and underperforms in acting every year are you talking about? Last year yes The Crown under-performed for its least acclaimed season that hardly anyone watched. But when The Crown s2 no one was overhyping it. People went to the lengths of predicting Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley over Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith and some had it in 6th in Series by the time of the ceremony when in reality it almost won over Game of Thrones. This year it has the most acclaimed season of a Drama Series this cycle (and probably will have one of the most by the end of it if not the most), is a season that a lot are calling the show’s best and is one actors, writers and directors and other notable people in Hollywood have raved about online saying it deserves to win all the awards. Just because it under-performed during the first season of this new era (a complete reboot for the show) it doesn’t mean it will again.
Season 1 it missed Jared Harris, Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith
Season 2 it misses Jodie Balfour (who was absolutely incredible) and Matthew Goode
Season 3 it missed Tobias Menzies and Josh O’Connor
And I’ve been on the forums for a while and literally everytime the Crown comes out, it monopolizes chatter for at least a month after here and then months later when nominations come out buncha actors missed. Thats what I mean by overhype.
Hey those are really good points! With 8 nominees, and no Succession, Crown can probably get a supporting actor nomination. You will probably be right on that
ReplyNovember 27, 2020 at 5:03 pm #1203878417Agreed.
I honestly believe HBC’s performance in it is one of her career best (I know it sounds like I’m using career best incessantly because of what I said about Lindsay Duncan the other day without knowing she was in The Leftovers but I genuinely mean it here).
It’s a performance that is both subtle and loud and HBC doesn’t play her over the top. She’s played her with a lot of empathy without being afraid to touch Margaret’s quirkiness. Just like Kirby did (although imo even better than what Kirby did).
I agree with you whole-heartedly, and I wish HBC got hers over Julia Garner. Cri de Coeur and her arc in it sorta works as a thesis for the entire premise of the show, and it should’ve been their writing submission.
And since you brought it up, Lindsay Duncan absolutely slaps in The Leftovers
November 27, 2020 at 4:57 pm #1203878400Bold of you to think that considering how weak the Emmy field is…
(1)The Crown underperforms for acting every year despite people hyping it up every year the month after it comes out.
(2)I think there will be under 8 nominees in the category since there will be less submissions.
(3)Handmaids Tale and Morning Show are popping with supporting actors, beloved by acting branch and confirmed coming back.
(4)Succession is the same except it is only likely coming back.
(5)Tom Pelphrey was snubbed just last year. All those reasons make me think that Josh O’Connor will be snubbed. I also think Gillian Anderson might be too
ReplyNovember 26, 2020 at 7:03 pm #1203876337Ethan Hawke, incredible should sweep and might even deserve TCA
Special notice needs to go to Joshua Caleb Johnson who also deserves a LEAD nomination and had a much harder part to play, had to be subtle and sell his character reconstruction.
And though the part was small, Daveed Diggs crafted the most interesting portrait of Frederick Douglas i’ve ever seen. He felt heart-wrenching
ReplyNovember 26, 2020 at 6:59 pm #1203876323I’ll preface this with saying that, since tapes dont matter, Im giving the episode where I thought each gave the best performance (not the best arc, tape, most screentime)
Of Whom I think Will Be Nominated
Olivia Colman- Fagan
Emma Corrin- War
Gillian Anderson- War
Helena Bonham Carter- The Hereditary Principle (lol)Of Whom I think Will be Snubbed

Josh O’Connor- Avalanche
Tobias Menzies- Gold StickWhy are you reporting this post? (optional):Not now
