If playing Billie Holiday guaranteed an Oscar nom, we’d see a Billie Holiday biopic every year. Andra Day received a nomination because AMPAS voters watched the movie after reading and hearing about the raves her performance was receiving. Of course a baity biopic role helps immeasurably, and the quality of a performance isn’t the sole factor in getting a nomination, but it is an important consideration, and was the single most important reason Day received a nomination over Zendaya despite the fact that more Oscar voters saw Zendaya’s performance before the nominations were announced.

HFPA has so many problems but somehow they can still afford to be petty af… Perhaps it’s naive of me but I’m still hoping most studios won’t submit their movies.
How are they being petty when Critics Choice were the ones to swoop in and steal their dates? They even went as far as trying to get their venue? Make it make sense?October 12, 2021 at 12:15 am #1204514638
. If I remember correctly cuz I asked the same exact question two years ago and I forgot who it was that explained why but the gist of it was Bafta cuz it has been the most accurate the past years
In split races :
Bafta : Affleck (Washington 2 time winner) , Hopkins (Boseman)
SAG : McConnaughey (Ejiofor), Bridges (First), Penn (Rourke)
Benedict is not beating a huge American and INTERNATIONAL star like Will SmithSeptember 28, 2021 at 11:16 am #1204490678
Apple is giving Swan Song starring Glenn Close and Mahershala Ali a cute AFI Fest premiere, I think Glenn Close is winning.September 25, 2021 at 4:20 am #1204484777
Frances McDormand is not missing, the placement is irrelevant cause she’s that big to get nominated in lead just like Viola Davis last year.September 21, 2021 at 3:12 am #1204476485
As much as I would like Will Smith to take home an Oscar, there’s a lot holding King Richard back. It’s not the kind of multi-category movie that usually gets nominated for Best Picture, and unlike the Actress category, the Actor one tends to overlap with Best Picture quite heavily in the nominations. It’s possible for him to maintain that momentum, but a nomination is probably more certain at this point. Right now Cumberbatch is my frontrunner (given that The Power of the Dog won’t have any of the aforementioned problems), and honestly, I wouldn’t mind it much at all if he won.
Cumberbaatch won’t win, his performance is too quiet and not showy at all, Smith will easily beat him.September 19, 2021 at 1:58 am #1204468993
We are over on that discussion. The amount of personal comments I was getting, it’s truly scary. I’m not living under a rock. I’m having a different opinion. Deal with it.
Well, it’s really not about having an opinion, Mulligan, Day, Kirby, Davis and McDormand were factually acclaimed if not more than the girls this year.September 19, 2021 at 1:07 am #1204468964
It was pretty weak. Two women as sole nominees, Viola Davis in a passionless film with no BP/BD/BAS mentions. The industry awards being all over the place means absolutely nothing. None of these women had nearly as acclaim as Kristen Stewart, Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, heck even Olivia Colman. Blanchett would have to overcome her whole cast first, then the raves of others with no narrative whatsoever. That’s almost an impossible task to achieve.
It doesn’t work like that, and you must have lived under a rock because they all got personal reviews as astounding as the ones you mentioned. Also for next time movie acclaim =|= personal reviews.September 15, 2021 at 1:25 am #1204460669
So many people are saying Chastain is in, I haven’t seen her yet but I want to believe them, she must be that great.
