Born in Portugal, the love for movie began when I was a child. Growing up watching Harry Potter and Spiderman movies, my interests soon became more serious and then I watched "Lost In Translation" and I fell in love with independent filmmaking. Predicting the Oscar is much more than fun, it's a game...

I loved the movie back then (and I still like it. I mean… who doesn’t like a rom-com?), but Weaver’s performance is a nothing performance!
I mean, Nicole Kidman got that atrocious snub for THE PAPERBOY, but Weaver got nominated…………ReplyEdgar Pereira

Negga manage to get a big couple of critics associations noms… So, far I think only North Dakota has nominated Winslet for Best Actress

https://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.com/January 18, 2021 at 11:26 am #1203989999About TOTC7 being TOP 2 at the Oscars… I really think it will win Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. Still, I want SBC to be nominated, but he doesn’t deliver winning material (fingers crossed for Daniel Kaluuya)
I must confess it is my #2 personal favorite movie of the year (behind SOUL) – guilty!ReplyEdgar Pereira

https://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.com/January 18, 2021 at 8:41 am #1203989470In terms of the top 3 in wins in Actress before the televised in 2018, 19 and 20-21.
2020-21 (so far)
1. McDormand – 12
2. Mulligan – 8
3. Davis – 2
3. Flanigan – 22019
1. Nyong’o – 23
2. Johansson – 10
2. Zellweger – 102018
1. Colman – 17
2. Collette – 11
3. Gaga – 5Flanigan aside, which I believe it will be a miracle to be nominated despite her big critics wins, I really believe Mulligan will be the “shocking snub” of the year

I know early reactions suggest the movie misses to achieve the brilliance it aims for, but it seems there’s universal praise for Day’s performance. I mean, Lee Daniels was able to pull great performances from Sidibe and Mo’Nique (PRECIOUS, Oscar nominated) and from Nicole Kidman (THE PAPERBOY) and Oprah Winfrey (THE BUTLER). I know Day doesn’t have the same status as the later two, but she plays a real-life icon. I don’t think she’ll win, but I still expect her to be nominated.Edgar Pereira

https://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.com/January 14, 2021 at 6:54 pm #1203984188Politics aside, I’ve just re-watched PYW and I believe it will be a hard sell for AMPAS members. Getting 1 nomination will be the reward (better than getting none) and I think it might well be in Best Original Screenplay instead of Best Actress.
Right now:
#1 – McDormand, NOMADLAND
#2 – Davis, MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM
#3 – Kirby, PIECES OF A WOMAN
#4 – Day, THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY (I believe Day will get some major award push and an Oscar nomination for playing Billie Holiday. She looks amazing in the trailer)
#5 – Loren, LA VITA DAVANTI A SÈ
——
#6 – Zendaya, MALCOLM & MARIE
#7 – Mulligan, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
#8 – Flanigan, NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS
#9 – Streep, LET THEM ALL TALK
#10 – Pfeiffer, THE FRENCH EXITEdgar Pereira

https://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.com/January 9, 2021 at 7:13 am #1203971709The attempt of getting Scarlett Johansson nominated at both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress back in the 2003/04 race for both GIRL WITH PEARL EARRING (lead) and LOST IN TRANSLATION (supporting).
I think it was that attempt of frauding her for supporting for LOST IN TRANSLATION that costed her an Oscar nomination back then. She was great in both, but voters didn’t bite it (although Critics’ Choice Award nominated her in Best Supporting Actress)ReplyEdgar Pereira

https://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.com/December 27, 2020 at 9:55 am #1203947761The movie has plenty of good intentions. I liked the approach to Diana’s grief for Steve’s loss and Barbara’s take on feminism, but things just get messy and lost in the third act. The trucks action sequence could have been epic, but it was a mess (and we all know Jenkins could have done better if you remember the No Man’s Land action scene in the first movie). WW1984 was doing just fine until the third act… then it just got bad and it wasted all the fine character development behind. It’s like a waste of character development.
Thank God Gal Gadot is such a luminous screen presence and a wonder to watch!ReplyEdgar Pereira

https://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.com/December 26, 2020 at 10:33 am #1203946279To be honest, I think Carey Mulligan’s Oscar chances got hurt with the Drama placement at the Globes… No matter how less Oscar-worthy the other performances might be, the thing is I believe Mulligan would win in Comedy, but now she’ll have to face some ferocious (and more popular) competition in Drama.
Focus should have tried a strategy where Flanigan would compete in Drama and Mulligan in Comedy.Edgar Pereira
