ReplyJanuary 28, 2023 at 2:16 pm #1205272749I’m not saying the campaigning itself was against the rules, I don’t think it was, but that’s how it felt, she also happens to not be like the kind of nominee the Oscars go for.
1) She wasn’t a critics darlings that precursors rejected
2) She wasn’t a precursors push
3) She wasn’t a critics push
4) She wasn’t in a strong Picture contender
5) She wasn’t a cottail nod
6) Her film wasn’t popular and widely seen
7) Shes’s not a veteran.Like I said, even when her campaign wasn’t against the rules, it just felt weird about how it happened.
January 28, 2023 at 1:51 pm #1205272724So what if they “made more sense”? Shouldn’t we want the Academy to make outside the box choices? This kind of talk just sounds like bitterness from those who didn’t see the nom coming…..
The weird campaign made Andrea look bad. All sharing the same copy/paste post, everything happening in the last week of voting, actors that never cared for the film suddenly where talking about it and plenty of them were big names. It looks fishy, even if it’s not. It didn’t felt organic, if their support have come a couple of months ago, when the film premiered and kept the exact same campaigning with all the big names pushing for it, it would have looked much better.
January 28, 2023 at 1:42 pm #1205272710Also, when will people realise that the Academy have five slots and also chose Williams and De Armas over Deadwyler and Davis? I know it’s easy to conflate Andrea’s (deserved) nomination with the reasons for their snub, but you’ll have to try harder because it isn’t adding up
De Armas and Williams made more sense to get in than Andrea’s random nod.
Williams was in a strong picture contender and we know how easy is for a white Actress to make it even if she underperforms at precursors.
De Armas proved with GG, AACTA and London Film Critics that she had support even when her film’s reception was abysmal, SAG and BAFTA just gave her a more solid ground to make it.
While all 3 of them are being strongly critized for their nominations, Michelle for her performance, Ana for her film and Andrea for her campaign, De Armas and Williams made sense.
January 28, 2023 at 10:05 am #1205272535Agree. It’s weird and actually quite rude of people acting like she could never possibly get another good role, as if she hasn’t just delivered knockout performances in The Harder They Fall/Station Eleven/Till in a very short space of time.
The problem is not her talent, it’s the racist industry and Academy that can easily ignore Black actors, especially Actresses.
I think she’ll get a nod in one point, especially because she has goodwill right now due to the whole Best Actress mess this year.
January 28, 2023 at 8:34 am #1205272417I think is more likely for The Fabelsman to be shut out than Banshees.
ReplyJanuary 28, 2023 at 5:52 am #1205272214Whatever is the veredict regarding the investigation, the Academy has to make changes about campaigning, promotion and voting. Maybe even have a jury like BAFTA does.
What Ricci said is true, smaller films get ignored simply for not having money for promotion. The Academy needs to help those films to also be in the conversation and make the field even for everybody. You can compare a film that does 5 screenings vs one that does 50. Maybe limiting the screenings per film, especially for the acting branch.

WTF
January 27, 2023 at 2:13 pm #1205271013When we said we wanted surprises and shocking moments during this race, we weren’t talking about this
January 27, 2023 at 1:37 pm #1205270959January 27, 2023 at 12:28 pm #1205270858Andrea has never been nominated before and rescinding this nomination would ensure she would be viewed as a controversial enough figure to never get another one because of bad history.
I think she’s in a lose-lose situation no matter what the Academy does regarding the investigation. This marks a bad precedent for her, if she keeps the nomination, people will still be skeptical about it, if it gets rescinded, it’d be a proof about the fishy campaign.
January 27, 2023 at 7:32 am #1205270359Frances Fisher and Mary McCormack will get suspended from the Academy.
They should be kicked out, this whole mess they made is dragging Andrea’s name to the mud.
