I know, how is this even a debate? If Ledger could do it in 2008 then this is a done deal.

Elazul replied to the topic MANK from David Fincher in the forum Movies 1 month, 1 week ago
“Depending on Mank’s reception, I’ll either go see them [Netflix] sheepishly asking them what I can do to redeem myself or take the attitude of the arrogant asshole who’ll require making other films in black and white,” Fincher joked. “No, I’m here to deliver them ‘content’ — whatever it means — likely to bring them spectators, in my sma…[Read more]

That’s disappointing because the supporting actors of Mank were great, unlike the lead actor and a certain actress…

Fincher went from a best seller adaptation (which was a box office success if I recall well) to this. And then recently he was bragging about his Netflix deal and that whether he should do more black and white films to justify the deal, or something along the lines. Netflix is also bending over backwards to make sure they get BP and this is the…[Read more]

Dern had one scene that was singled out and remembered by those who watched the movie. Seyfried really doesn’t have that (nor had Basinger in my opinion).

I cannot decide whether Helen Hunt or Gwyneth Paltrow is the all-time worst winner.
I haven’t seen Central Station from that lineup either, is it similar to something like Roma?

Elazul replied to the topic MANK from David Fincher in the forum Movies 1 month, 1 week ago
I think it was too different in tone compared to the rest of it. (BTW I saw there was debate whether drama or comedy but the funeral and related scenes are there to make sure it is drama…) I guess I’m just a bit too critical on Oldman now as at times it was too Trumbo-ish.
I agree that it’s tailor-made for the preferential ballot, no way…[Read more]

Elazul replied to the topic Did Glenn Close turn down her Oscar winning role? in the forum Movies 1 month, 1 week ago
Redgrave’s role is more like supporting, the real leads are the young couple. So it is possible if Close was in the role she would have been in the supporting category instead…

Like I said in the Mank thread, she is basically Kate Hudson playing The Great Gatsby getup. You know if this movie was done decades earlier like they wanted to, Hudson would have been in the role.
She does a lot more than Margot Robbie with her car and picnic scenes but it’s still just not nomination worthy. I guess the Basinger comparisons…[Read more]

I thought the part where she fells down the water was razzie-bad and also when she cries with the coal on her face. I seriously hope this doesn’t get her to be a five time nominee.

Elazul replied to the topic MANK from David Fincher in the forum Movies 1 month, 1 week ago
You must be joking, it’s impossible to think a film could be any more of an Oscar bait than Mank.
I mean, the script is littered with Hollywood inside-jokes, there are quotes about the great depression that can be linked to the current pandemic, tons of behind the scenes stuff (I mean, the MGM walkthrough alone makes the academy cream their…[Read more]

Come on now, Oldman’s drunkard scene was atrocious. He is lucky he had the Winston Churchill role. I still don’t see him snubbed, if Bryan Cranston did get in for a similar role but an even worse performance…

The monkey lines AND the stuff about the depression ending and movies blooming in his first scene are total industry bait and he should be getting in.

Meg Ryan should have been in contention. I guess she never really caught on with the industry but HFPA did like her so the snub for this one just a year after Sleepless In Seattle comedy nomination is baffling.

Just mentioned in the Mank thread that three of its supporting actors should be recognized.
Tom Burke
Charles Dance
Arliss Howard -
Elazul replied to the topic MANK from David Fincher in the forum Movies 1 month, 1 week ago
Well I guess this is the new definition of “Oscar bait”, Fincher literally begs for it and so does Netflix.
I think screenplay is a very likely winner.
Editing, cinematography and production design, these are shoe-ins.
I thought this was a movie where 3 supporting actors could get recognition. The guy playing Orson Welles for obvious reasons,…[Read more]
