So happy for Jessica!
February 27, 2022 at 5:50 pm #1204821154Finally an awards ceremony!
February 16, 2022 at 1:23 pm #1204805289But not The Darkest Hour? or
Three BillboardsThe Darkest Hour is not great but Gary Oldman saves it completely, I can’t hate on that movie just because of him. Three Billboards… not my cup of tea, but I can’t say it’s bad.
ReplyFebruary 16, 2022 at 12:59 pm #1204805256For me, the 90th Academy Awards had one of the better Best Picture lineups in recent memory: Call Me By Your Name Darkest Hour Dunkirk Get Out Lady Bird Phantom Thread The Post The Shape of Water Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri I mean CMBYN, Get Out, Lady Bird and Phantom Thread all in one year? Divine! Plus, A Fantastic Women winning International Film was the cherry on top of it all
Okay, yes, but TSOW and The Post kinda ruined it for me.

ReplyFebruary 13, 2022 at 1:40 pm #1204800122Not possible. Being the Ricardos was rejected by the general membership and all other branches. Visibility was not an issue for the movie because it was being helmed by Amazon studio spamming FYC ads everywhere including the actress round table (which Kidman was not even a part of). It made it at the Globes (Best Actor/Actress, Screenplay), AACTA, WGA, PGA, and BAFTA (Original Screenplay and Best Score). It’s Ma Rainey 2.0.
I was talking about TLD.
February 13, 2022 at 1:21 pm #1204800092The Lost Daughter missing Best Picture at BAFTAs and Oscars makes me think voters don’t like the film. People say don’t pay attention to audience score, but that score is the worst score for Best Actress film nominee since forever.
Maybe not enough people outside the actors’ branch watched it to make the final 10?
February 12, 2022 at 4:21 pm #1204798697I personally loved Cher in Silkwood as well, she’s my win that year. I love Cher in Five and Dime Jimmy Dean too.
I loved her Silkwood too! Such an underrated movie.
February 10, 2022 at 8:17 am #1204794414Is BAFTA even relevant this year? It went 0/6. There’s no Gaga or Haim or Scanlan at the Oscars, so the entire British bloc will place their votes behind Colman. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Yeah, I think so too. Even if they didn’t vote for her at BAFTA, she’s their obvious pick for the Oscars.
February 10, 2022 at 8:15 am #1204794410Yeah better, but still couldn’t get back their tiny budgets. For the life of me, Gucci would have been a better BP contender than Nightmare Alley which was a terrible sleeping pill. Anyway, call me when Spencer gets back its budget. I heard Neon is broke already. Lol
You need to stop being so damn bitter.
February 9, 2022 at 11:50 am #1204792504Over the past few months, I hate to mute/unfollow some many people from film twitter. The pettiness, the messiness, just nothing short of primary school behavior. They have way too much time on their hands to interact/bait the trolls and the stans. They should be watching and reviewing more movies instead. I don’t know where Im gonna get my news from now. But at least, thank god Film Updates always keeps it professional. And I’m shocked that people are still doing it even today. Move on. Focus on the performances that are actually nominated.
The way I ignore people left and right everywhere here too. I don’t hate muting/ignoring though, it makes my life easier.
February 9, 2022 at 10:53 am #1204792342I really love Gaga and thought she would be a deserving nominee, but coming for Cruz makes no sense. Just because Parallel Mothers wasn’t Spain’s submission does not make it obscure, it’s still an Almodovar film starring an Oscar winner. We all know Sony knows how to run a late campaign (The Father), so it shouldn’t be that big of a surprise. I think what this race shows is that everyone was within very close margins of each other when the top 2 BAFTA nominees are Oscar snubbed and SAG only lined up 3/5. Also, I really only think Gaga missed because people assumed she was safe and put their vote elsewhere. Similar to what I imagine happened to Amy Adams in Arrival.
I’m also leaning towards this. With how competitive this category is, I’m sure many voters went for passion picks over actors they thought would be safe.
February 9, 2022 at 10:43 am #1204792314One detail that I don’t see people mention is the fact that it still got Best Original Score over Spencer and BTR. The latter received a BAFTA nomination in that category.
Sad that the score for Spencer didn’t make it. I thought it was so good.
February 9, 2022 at 8:58 am #1204792032Besides the Oscar nom, this role confirmed Gaga as a movie star. It’s the only drama that made money in almost two years and that’s probably 60% because of her. The role wasn’t a mistake. She will be fine.
This. She’s easily among the most bankable movie stars of the post-pandemic era, I see her getting countless offers and roles in the near future. Hope she chooses wisely.
If anyone out there is trying to remake The Little Foxes and needs a perfect Regina… But then, maybe she shouldn’t just do impeccably dressed women who kill their husbands.
February 9, 2022 at 8:22 am #1204791932God Madonna stans are going to go so hard on Gaga for this. Why can’t the Academy just nominate her? This is so embarrassing. I need therapy now.
I assure you Gaga doesn’t give a shit.
