Does anyone know why they didn’t cast Cynthia Erivo as Celie? To me, she’s the logical choice since she has more film and tv experience and she’s obviously played the part on stage.
I think the transition from stage to film can be challenging and that’s really why I will be surprised if Fantasia is even nominated for BA.

ReplyMarch 21, 2023 at 5:52 am #1205358581I thought she was lead. I thought Chadwick should have been supporting.

Sean Penn and Marcia Gay Harden were fantastic in Mystic River.

ReplyMarch 15, 2023 at 5:20 pm #1205353474I saw Creed 3. Didn’t love it as much as the prior poster but it’s highly entertaining. Jordan showed real strength as a director and he had moments of very good acting, though I still find him somewhat limited (but incredibly attractive). Tessa Thompson was great as always. The biggest takeaway for me was that Jonathan Majors is the real deal. He steals every scene he is in and is completely mesmerizing as a performer.

ReplyMarch 15, 2023 at 6:48 am #1205352832Top Gun Maverick is a horrendous joke of a film and further proof that the Academy should go back to 5 films.
Judd Hirsch is a great actor but had no business being nominated for Fabelmans.
I agree with the prior poster who said that Paul Mescal is overrated in Aftersun.
ReplyMarch 14, 2023 at 4:17 pm #1205352383I don’t understand the hesitancy behind The Color Purple. The original movie holds the record for most nominations without a win! The musical has received three Tonys and fifteen nominations! The major players are Fantasia (Grammy winner and twelve-time nominee), Colman Domingo (Emmy winner and Tony nominee), Danielle Brooks (Tony nominee), and Taraji P. Henson (Oscar and Emmy nominee)! Oprah and Spielberg are producing! It is so Locked with a capital L.
A few years ago, there was huge excitement here and elsewhere for Dear Evan Hansen and Ben Platt I was even excited to see Jennifer Hudson slay Memory in Cats
I’m a huge musical fan so I hope it works out better this year.

I will put my money on Color Purple (musicals are so tough, film director and star largely untested on big screen) and Maestro (don’t love the feedback from early viewers or the need to make lots of changes, nor the heavy Cooper makeup). I bet Barbie bombs with audiences – too adult for kids and too odd for a lot of adults, plus Gosling looks ridiculous.
I honestly hope I’m wrong about all 3 of these.
March 13, 2023 at 10:10 am #1205350647I don’t think Dana’s take is hateful, but she undercuts her whole argument by saying Not since Joaquin!!!. He won 3 years ago. So it’s not that big a deal to award an actor in a crappy movie.
My personal opinion is that Joker and Whale were miles better than Bohemian Rhapsody. So were Phoenix and Fraser vs Malek.
March 13, 2023 at 10:07 am #1205350644There is nothing woke about a white straight man in a fat suit winning. Butler lost this because of his behavior during awards season. He was a relative newbie running around like he was Daniel Day Lewis and enough voters were over it.
March 13, 2023 at 9:45 am #1205350572I hope Maestro is good. Would make me feel a bit better about Cooper being robbed for ASIB and Mulligan for PYW.
I am a huge Nolan fan so I hope Oppenheimer is as good as it should be. I’m still bitter about waiting years for Tenet.
