10. We Own This CityNovember 28, 2022 at 7:06 am #1205168900I haven’t seen The Offer but this list was decent until it got to no.10
Even that person isn’t technically recommending it lol
ReplyOk, here’s the 10. Number 10 doesn’t deserve to be on the list, but I needed there to be 10, so it is what it is.
A significantly inferior follow-up to 2020’s Normal People, this Sally Rooney adaptation from director Lenny Abrahamson finds some life in corners of inner-city Dublin and in a strong lead performance from newcomer Alison Oliver, but its 12 episodes drag as uncharismatic supporting players (Sasha Lane especially) do little to enhance Rooney’s tiresome Dubliner creations.

November 25, 2022 at 8:45 am #1205166478My main problem with The White Lotus is that its satire and commentary comes across as more shallow the deeper it tries to dig in. There are some fun individual scenes but its overaching narrative is not as incisive as the show itself likes to think. It also often loses the balance between commenting on privilege and reveling in it but that’s a problem with many shows these days.

Martin McDonagh would like to have a word with both of you.
ReplyNovember 22, 2022 at 8:04 am #1205163685No reason for Till/The Whale to submit at Gotham but not here. Spirits are higher profile and have a relatively wider eligibility criteria. Too many stronger Oscar contenders in the mix hurt both of them imo.
November 21, 2022 at 10:54 am #1205162819SAG should rectify their mistake from last year and award Yellowjackets the ensemble award this time.
November 21, 2022 at 3:20 am #1205162404Can the Gaga stans stop spamming and derailing the thread when she’s not even competing? Last year was enough headache.
November 5, 2022 at 3:59 pm #1205142917Vince Gilligan’s work pre BB:
Hancock 41%
Pulse 11%
Home Fries 31%
Wilder Napalm 25%
Robbery Homicide Division 57%
The Lone Gunmen 38%
There can be other factors holding someone back. Creating a super acclaimed show on your own isn’t a fluke.
November 5, 2022 at 1:23 pm #1205142769ROP was just a generic fantasy show with the LOTR tag attached to it. Amazon didn’t have the rights to The Silmarillion which is the book that actually goes into detail about that Age. They relied on the LOTR appendices for a broader view of things but they ignored and distorted much of it as well. In the end, it ended up resembling nothing Tolkien wrote.
I’m sure The Last of Us will not have any such problems. Bella Ramsey is the only aspect of the show I’m nervous about. I’m not convinced she has the required chops to do justice to a difficult character like Ellie but we shall see.
November 5, 2022 at 12:47 pm #1205142742I feel like Succession will hit the 80s and The Last of Us mid to late 70s on MC but what do I know Yesterday I thought Crown could hit the 90s.
If they adapt the games properly, I see no reason why it can’t go 80 or even 90 plus. The source material is more acclaimed than most things in recent memory and the game lends itself well to a tv adaptation due to its cinematic nature in scope, storytelling and characterization.
November 5, 2022 at 12:43 pm #1205142736Johan Renck has actually dropped out of the show if I’m not mistaken. Beanpole director Kantemir Balagov has helmed the pilot instead.
Ah I was waiting for that Chernobyl reunion. Beanpole was a good film though so Balagov might prove to be a decent replacement.
November 5, 2022 at 12:38 pm #1205142734The Good Fight will probably end up in my top 10 if its finale is as strong as the season has been so far (I’ve only included shows that have finished airing seasons).
It’s likely top 5 for me. Great television. I don’t know if it’s an unpopular opinion but I might prefer this show to The Good Wife in the end. I think it has been more biting and consistent than the latter.
ReplyNovember 5, 2022 at 12:10 pm #1205142693All I know is Succession is coming for a threepeat
Not when they will be accepting their Emmys for The Last of Us
