No way EEAAO wins Score over All Quiet and then loses BP to All Quiet. The contradiction.
I see what you mean, but in NGNG predictions I think the spirit is to predict surprises, especially outright shocks. That spirit means it’s almost a necessity to go against perceived wisdom, historical stats, category-links, etc.
I don’t really see what I’ve put in terms of it adding up to a contradiction, anyway. For example, I would have no problem picking, say, Butler in Actor yet not picking Elvis in Makeup & Hairstyling – historical category link stats be damned.
Look at the number of BP winners recently that win BP yet win not much else? That’s a seeming contradiction, but not so much if you alter your perspective.
So, maybe voters think that EEAAO had the best Score; and that All Quiet was the better film. Or the other way around. Possible and not irrational.
Now, what if in addition you had included my Prod Design NGNG of All Quiet? If it wins that then would an All Quiet BP win be as surprising?
Btw, I do follow the logic of your point: that if in the Score category, EEAAO, ranked as weak, beats All Quiet, which is ranked as strong, then that is a definite indication that EEAAO is even stronger than thought, and that All Quiet is probably weaker than thought.
Then again, if your making a broad range of NGNG predictions, like I’ve done, then it’s fair and indeed arguably sensible to NOT approach with a single underlying narrative or take. A broader range of potential narratives or paths, lacking internal consistency, probably makes more sense.

Good point! I agree! 🙂
My actual lodged predictions are different. I’ve treated this NGNG thread as a separate predictions log.

Will Smith faces more humiliation as Jada Pinkett Smith’s ex-lover August Alsina references ‘entanglement’ affair in new song and is ‘set to write tell-all book about their sex life’Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith admitted to her affair with August Alsina in 2020
At the time, Jada, 50, referred to the years-long fling as an ‘entanglement’
Now, R&B singer Alsina, 30, has referenced the affair on a new song
He is also rumored to be penning a tell-all memoir that will detail the romance
Comes as Will, 53, faces continued repercussions for slapping Chris RockWhat does Will do now to defend his wife’s honour?
N.B. I couldn’t find a single mention of Ukraine in that entire article. Then again: why would there be a mention?
ReplyApril 5, 2022 at 3:19 pm #1204905376Surely this take is completely reductive? Violence is violence and unnecessary full stop? It has no place on the Academy stage.
Yes.
Some of the Will Smith apologists are willing to denigrate the black community in general, in order to try to defend Will.
ReplyApril 5, 2022 at 10:53 am #1204905040The best European movie of 2021 for me was “The Worst Person in the World”. The Academy got it right.
Agreed. I’m still obsessed with that film and Renate Reinsve. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve watched it. For me, it was Best Original Screenplay.
ReplyApril 5, 2022 at 10:46 am #1204905030That’s probably because she would never have given such a fake, emotionally manipulative, egotistical acceptance speech less than an hour later, nor gone dancing arrogantly to her own music at a crowded party in front of cameras and sycophants, sandwiched between the crocodile tears and the publicist’s apology.
This is entirely a male scenario. You can racialise that if you want.
The most unusual attempt so far to racialize it seems to have come from Tiffany Cross, who’s said that said the incident was “about how Black people relate to each other.”
MSNBC Guest Claims Will Smith’s Slap Is ‘Hard to Explain to a White Person’
Then there’s actress Yvette Nicole Brown, who’s said, “On Twitter, a lot of us were like, ‘y’all sit this out for your protection,’ because when we need to have a conversation, we’re gonna have it.’”
She continued. “If you put your nose in something Black people need to discuss amongst ourselves, it happens. I am from East Cleveland, I would like to say that I’ve seen harder slaps at family Spades tournaments than what happened on that stage.”
Tiffany added: “I think it is utterly ridiculous to center this in the opinions of white folks. This is just about what happened there. The jumping-off point should not be, ‘Oh, but what might the white people think about it?’”
So there you have it: according to Tiffany Cross and Yvette Nicole Brown: White people aren’t allowed to have an opinion on the incident.
But Tiffany’s most peculiar comment came when she said:
“There’s a level of disrespect that every person can handle. Some people use their words, some people use their hands. It is what it is. In the black community we understand that.”
So, there’s a black person actually claiming that the black community are more understanding of the need for some people to resort to physical violence when their disrespect level threshold has been breached.
Strange.

ReplyApril 3, 2022 at 10:53 pm #1204902800You’re looking in the wrong place for objective discussion here. Because I posted a few times criticising the man’s criminal act, and didn’t enjoy his movie/performance this year automatically means I hate the man personally apparently. Let the stans stan. Movie forum in a nutshell, moving on now…
But do you think they’re Will stans or Jada stans?
I phrase it as an either / or as I guess it must be complicated / problematic to be a stan of the both of them, given the traumas and fallouts (publicised by them!) of their open marriage.
ReplyApril 3, 2022 at 10:40 pm #1204902784All of this could have been avoided had they given Benedict Cumberbatch — who was a million times better than Will — the award. I can’t believe Will’s good but snooze-worthy performance ended up winning. The Oscars are hopeless.
Will was the worthy winner.
I doubt anyone was a “million times” better than anyone else.
ReplyApril 3, 2022 at 9:56 pm #1204902700I thought Will Smith deserved the Oscar. In his Richard Williams role he gave what was head and shoulders the best and most subtle performance of his life. Will was the best in category. I imagine that Andrew Garfield (rather than Cumberbatch) probably finished 2nd to him in the Best Actor vote.
About the GI Jane joke, from out of the conversation on this thread…
Who ELSE would be in the running for the lead in a GI Jane 2?
…”I realised the level of compliment Chris Rock was giving Jada when he suggested her as the new GI Jane, given she’s half a century old and certainly nowhere near the A-Lister that Demi Moore was when cast in the original film.”
Will showed two reactions:
A) His initial enjoyment and laughter at the joke.
B) Followed by his rage after seeing Jada roll her eyes at the joke. His positive reaction to the joke was much the better and more apt reaction as Chis Rock was giving Jada a compliment and a generous one at that.
ReplyApril 2, 2022 at 8:05 pm #1204894991Some of you here need to relax and take a breath. I mean having all these feelings of hate for someone who will never know you exist is absurd and kinda sad. Looking at you vicki Leekx, its ridiculous that you posted how much you hate him. Maybe calm down a bit, the dude is sorry and has resigned, what more do you want, for him to be arrested?. He will make another box office hit and studios will line up for him again.
Luckily for Will, Chris Rock demonstrated the grace or mercy to repeatedly refuse to have Will arrested.
If commenting on Chris Rock being assaulted counts as evidence of “hate” then on that basis it follows that the assault on Chris Rock must definitely count as “hate”.
