How many Best Picture winners won with only DGA as their guild win? Granted, The Power of the Dog could win ASC, but it can easily lose that too.

Off the top of my head, I can think of Daniel Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread and Saoirse Ronan for Little Women as recent examples.

The only comparable precedent for a Smit-McPhee win would be when, in 2002, Chris Cooper won for Adaptation. over Christopher Walken for Catch Me If You Can. Like Kotsur, Walken had won SAG and BAFTA. Like Smit-McPhee, Cooper won a Golden Globe. Golden Globe winners usually don’t triumph at the Oscars over SAG and/or BAFTA winners, but Cooper is…[Read more]

It nabbed one MPSE nomination, for its foley work, which it lost to Dune this weekend. Even though it was widely predicted to nab the Best Sound Oscar nomination, especially early on, it maybe got that nomination by the skin of its teeth.

Belfast isn’t even nominated at CAS, so it would need to become the first film to lack a Best Cinematography Oscar nomination to win ASC to have any guild win under its belt, which is highly, highly unlikely.

Last year they nominated 4/5 films with no sound noms, but the Editing winner still had the Sound nomination (and win).

I have to wonder now why Kotsur couldn’t have won the Golden Globe and just swept.

This bodes well for Cumberbatch to win, if you ask me. BAFTA was unlikely to give one film two acting awards.

I have found out that it does have a nomination at MPSE for Sound Editing Effects Foley. Other than that + ASC + PGA, it looks like that is all that is left for Belfast as far as its guild run goes.

It isn’t nominated at WGA. BAFTA and CC aren’t guilds.

Please correct me if I’m mistaken but, other than PGA, Belfast‘s only remaining chance at winning a guild award is at ASC, right? Or is there another guild that has yet to announce their winner that Belfast has been nominated at?

And, in its entire history, the DGA winner hasn’t aligned with the Oscars an additional three times.
1968
DGA: Anthony Harvey The Lion in Winter
Oscar: Carol Reed, Oliver!1972
DGA: Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather
Oscar: Bob Fosse, Cabaret1985
DGA: Steven Spielberg, The Color Purple (not nominated at the Oscars)
Oscar: Sydney Pollack, Ou…[Read more] -

We’ll have to respectfully agree to disagree on this haha. I think Dune was more deliberately paced, like Villeneuve’s work usually is, whereas King Richard’s pacing was faster (and I have to say, it paces its 140 minute runtime very well and it mostly runs by without dragging; compare its pacing to Don’t Look Up’s, which has a similar runtime…[Read more]

All Dune needs is the BAFTA win to win the Oscar. I’m not gonna panic unless Dune loses that award next week.

Critics’ Choice ties are egregious and just ridiculous, but I now am kinda hoping they give Best Supporting Actor to Kotsur and Smit-McPhee in a tie. If they are both there at the ceremony, it would be a wonderful moment to see them both winning together, side-by-side.
