In a interview conducted with Paul Raci, they mention he’s rooting for CODA. Troy and Raci are very close so the more detached response in that EW ballot was already a red flag as was the assumption that Raci has been part of high profile films. The desperation around here is getting embarasssing.
ReplyFebruary 28, 2022 at 9:24 am #1204824005I get preferences vary and I respect that, but boring, disappointing, uninspired, underwhelming are certainly very tone deaf adjectives to use for a historic moment where we have our first latina and queer woman of color winner here at SAG and potentially the first openly out acting winner at the Oscars, giving one of the most acclaimed performances of the year in one of the most acclaimed films of the year which doesn’t seem to be enough. Her closest competition is another privileged straight white woman and it doesn’t look like her sweep would be labelled as such no matter how many other deserving contenders people would list who weren’t even in contention. Personally believe there are less crude ways to express your opinions on such matters. Progress shouldn’t be an issue only when it’s favourable to your needs or opinions and empty statements don’t mean much when the actions are in direct contrast with the words. I thought some of you knew better than to behave like this.
February 26, 2022 at 2:10 pm #1204818776Euphoria is in the same boat as Big Little Lies in my eyes. Not because of all the stuff people said above or the increased viewership or the viral moments but also because of the rotten behind the scenes drama. Every week there’s a new story about how toxic it all is with Levinson and the cast and crew. That bad buzz can be very damaging, even if it’s not for the cast. Winning for the previous season didn’t help Kidman get a nomination again if you people remember.
December 28, 2021 at 7:52 am #1204683185I haven’t seen Lost and im sure that’s a great episode but the Sopranos finale is arguably the most dissected and analyzed tv episode of the past two decades
I think it would be disingenuous to say that when it’s not really the episode that is being dissected or analyzed. Any conversation generated around it has been because of that cut to black ending and there isn’t much else to it. That is not a worthy argument to support its win as a writing achievement. You have Lost right there if you want to actually talk about a heavily analyzed finale. I’m sure you will agree with most folks here when you end up watching Through the Looking Glass.
ReplyDecember 9, 2021 at 2:29 am #1204639269It’s ridiculous to predict a film to win both Screenplay and Director but also say it can’t win Picture.
It’s still very early but isn’t that what’s happening at the critics awards?
Washington DC: Directing + Acting + Adapted Screenplay but not Picture
NYFCC: Directing + two acting wins + most likely screenplay if it’s split like at the oscars but not Picture
Atlanta: Directing + two acting awards + cinematography + strongest adapted screenplay contender based on their top 10 but not Picture
As I said it’s early, but consistently winning so many individual trophies and still coming up short in the end can indicate a similar thing happening at the Oscars. It’s not impossible.
November 22, 2021 at 2:57 am #1204593928Lol we all know the real artist of the year was Dua Lipa, The Weeknd or even Olivia Rodriguo. Neither BTS or Taylor Swift had an impact this year so just chill.
ReplyNovember 15, 2021 at 9:12 am #1204579985With S2 I was eager to get to the next episode, this season has felt more like an obligation to me. Not a single episode this season would be in my top 10 for this show. Individually there are still great scenes occasionally but at the end of any episode, it always ends up being less than the sum of its parts. Things move forward plot wise but everything feels stagnated. I also agree they are rehashing things at this point. I’ll wait for the season to end and binge watch the rest then. Maybe it leads to a better experience?
I guess everyone cannot be The Leftovers and follow one GOAT season with another.
September 26, 2021 at 11:44 am #1204486793Keri in 2016(>2018 imo) and Tatiana in 2013(>2016). That’d cover everyone.
September 22, 2021 at 2:08 pm #1204480289The thing is, they literally spent so much time discussing how white the winners were, but then barely even mentioned the acclaimed black winner right in front of them who had just made history as the first black woman to win in her category while preventing a sweep (another thing they spent loads of time complaining about) make it make sense.
Not to be overly harsh, but to me, that is mostly because most of the outrage always comes across as performative, intentionally or not. Just a couple of pages ago people seemed to be arguing over whose favourite show was less ‘white’ for instance.
It’s a very myopic view of the situation when representation only seems to become an issue in the most extreme cases.
The only person of color nominated for acting at the 2019 Oscars was Cynthia Erivo for example (don’t think I need to say how problematic in itself that nomination is) and that somehow was not a problem for anyone despite #OscarsSoWhite being a major talking point just a couple years ago. This own site’s awards hands out only one or two awards to pocs in the major acting categories. Regina King was the only non-white person to win outside of guest just last year. Where were the diversity concerns then?
The only person of color who was expected to win by Gold Derby was MKW and even he wasn’t a sure bet. The conversation that should have happened before the Emmys during all those podcasts, video chats and discussions talking about predictions is now relegated to a single day of outrage and forgotten after that.
Your concern highlights that. Folks are too caught up in expressing their ‘anger’ that they fail to even acknowledge or celebrate the thing they are very well supposed to be fighting for. Case in point, when MKW lost, an article about the lack of a single black winner in supporting actor drama was published immediately. As far as I’m aware, no such thing exists highlighting the significance of Coel’s win.
It’s easy to tweet a couple of things these days and leave it at that. But that’s not actual work, merely a performative symbol of allyship that benefits no one and is as useless as a glass hammer at the end of the day.
September 20, 2021 at 7:16 am #1204474400But I also don’t think Anderson’s choice to be more low-key with that is any less valid than Corrin’s. They both need to do what’s true for them.
Oh definitely. I’m not being critical of Anderson in any way or form. Apologies if it came out like that.
September 20, 2021 at 6:08 am #1204474228I think people should also keep in mind Gillian Anderson is bisexual, so the Corrin argument is a stretch.
While I do get where you are coming from, that’s a very false equivalence imo. Someone who is very much not into heteronormative stuff and openly supports things that challenge it (contrary to Couverture, the chest binder thing was a big talking point, at least in my community) is not really comparable to the person who says she leads an actively heterosexual lifestyle for example. Might be just me but I wasn’t even aware of the Gillian thing.
There are still levels of queerness that people find acceptable. That’s partly why I found Porter’s win so significantly huge and groundbreaking.
Do not think Corrin lost or Colman won necessarily because of this alone but I can see where the point originally came from.
Also, three cis straight white men winning is not how you wanna go about arguing against any existing biases lol.
September 14, 2021 at 5:27 am #1204458745Not really. The internet hates Gillian’s performance like they did with Dinklage’s by the end of GoT.
Outside of these forums, both Dinklage and Anderson’s performances are very beloved from what I’ve seen.

September 9, 2021 at 3:04 am #1204445891Yeah we are cancer for defending her but not those people who are slut shaming her?
In a forum filled primarily with gay men, it’s no surprise that such comments are regularly made to demean and belittle certain women and everyone will turn a blind eye to it. Certain is the key word here because you would not see the same reaction or treatment if it involved someone in favor with the crowd here. There shouldn’t be more outrage over which actress is better for heaven’s sake but here we are.
The gay community is and always has been, in general, more callous and misogynistic in their treatment of women than they actually realize. I guess the mindset of linking sexism almost exclusively with some innate desire for sexual dominance is a major reason for this nonobservance. Reminds me of Dennis Harvey bringing up his sexuality as some sort of defence last year in that Carey Mulligan discourse.
P.S. Seeing the past obnoxious comments about Boseman (and other people) from a certain user, I’m very surprised how they are still allowed to be active here.
August 23, 2021 at 2:39 pm #1204412152The Chair going #1 WW on Netflix with an increment of 131 points from yesterday. Yes Sandra, yes hit
I swear I’ve seen no one talk about this show outside of these forums so color me surprised.
