You cannot feel so confident that another film can’t spoil Dog, Belfast, or WSS. You cannot just go off the GG and critic noms/wins for your reasoning/stats. Those stats are what make those 3 likely, but not at all guaranteed. Stats are always meant to be broken. No one was predicting Green Book to win BP, look what happened.
Imagine if House Of Gucci wins. I kinda want it to win at this point because the meltdowns here will be iconic.
January 15, 2022 at 1:46 am #1204728954What are your personal views on the AMPAS voting system? What should they do to promote diversity? Which categories should be under preferential ballot? Should critics and pundits be given the right to vote? Should a minimum of 2 international films be compulsorily nominated every year in Best Picture under quota? Thoughts.
Best Picture should go to the movie that gets the most 1s on the ballot end of. I think preferential ballots water down the academy and makes them go with safe crowd pleasuers.

ReplyJanuary 12, 2022 at 1:55 pm #1204721976I think many of you are counting House Of Gucci back in too quickly. SAG is not the oscars and the Baftas could easily not nominate House Of Gucci.
January 12, 2022 at 7:04 am #1204718334Some brief observations: — Good news for Ann Dowd. It proves once again that she is and has always been the choice from “Mass” — Good day for West Side Story — the Alvarez and Faist mentions are very important, I think. — The Power of the Dog got 14 mentions, which I think is what we expected, right? Or did it under- or over-perform? — The Penelope Cruz snub absolutely baffles me. Was there a visibility issue?? — tick… tick… BOOM! massively under-performed. Also: a reminder that just because you get a bunch of longlist mentions, that doesn’t mean you’re getting a lot of nominations. Ma Rainey had 11 longlist mentions last year but ended up with three nominations only.
TTB didn’t underperform. It showed up in best picture, best actor, best sound, best editing and best adapted screenplay. I think it did very well actually.

Of particular note, Dune, Belfast and CODA are at the top of the list and HoG is pretty high up. https://www.metacritic.com/feature/metacritic-users-pick-the-best-of-2021
Seeing TPOTD above Spiderman: No Way Home is a very encouraging sign that is more audience friendly than we’ve suspected. I know its not at the top but its a good sign when any movie is above Spiderman: No Way Home because audiences went batshit for that movie.
January 7, 2022 at 10:30 am #1204702946The tick tick boom praise with these critics is absolutely baffling. I can’t believe it keeps making top 10 lists. Truly one of the most miss-even, messy, poorly directed musicals I’ve seen in years. Not as bad as Cats, but that’s honestly not saying much. Even The Prom was more enjoyable than TTB, and I didn’t like that one either LOL.
OMG based critics
January 5, 2022 at 1:58 pm #1204699006I’m just now listening to the latest NBP podcast, they did a vote for the favorite films of 2021 among their listeners, and shockingly Belfast ended up at four. I’m saying shockingly cause even here I’ve only seen like one person who loves it. I have no idea where the love is coming from. The top two were, more predictably, TPOTD and Dune (with only a 15 vote difference).
There’s a world outside of this forum and flim twitter. Given it’s audience rating I can see how some people might like a flim like TPOTD and would instead root for a more easy going and light hearted movie. Personally I would be delighted if either of those two won especially over WSS (I think its ok but I don’t see how its THAT good) but yeah there is some passion for Belfast there just not here. Don’t make a mistake in thinking this forums opinions represent anything other than this forums opinions.
January 4, 2022 at 12:53 pm #1204696779for one dollar name a woman
I have my tastes and I was discussing well established directors that haven’t gotten a best director yet the industry is notriously male biased but if you want a female name (besides Jane Campion who is likely getting it this year) then Emerald Fannel. If Promising Young Woman is her debut then I will be very excited for her future work.
ReplyJanuary 4, 2022 at 10:06 am #1204696369(This year)2022:I don’t think that Paul Thomas Anderson will win,Campion and Spielberg are the clearly frontrunners with maybe Branagh. 2023:Lathimos and Daren might have a chance but It will depend on how public friendly their movies are and I don’t see them winning.I haven’t read The killer but is the type of film that Fincher fits so maybe???Wes Anderson seems the less likely of the four. 2024:this will be an interesting year because of Dune part 2 and Oppenheimer.I don’t see Denis wining because anyone who has read Dune can tell that the end is bad(anticlimatic, cold and the story still feels unfinished so they might have to make a film of the next book and with the third film Denis might win). This may be an unpopular opinion but I think that Oppenheimer fits Nolan perfectly(the book is really interesting)and it seems more likely to get acting nominations(Cillian,Emily,FlorencePugh…)than anything he has ever done so It easily his biggest chance to win an oscar since Dunkirk. With Tarantino I can see him winning with his last film but we don’t yet when he will realease it.
Imagine the showdown if Taratino releases his final flim during the same year that Openheimer is released.
ReplyJanuary 4, 2022 at 8:28 am #1204696095David fincher or Quentin (for his last film)
The only reason I didn’t pick Taratino is because 2022 has a lot of these guys taking their shot. My gut says Lanthimous atm but we’ll have to see how each of their movies pan out.
