This is my favourite film of the year. It’s so unbelievably well crafted. The acting from both female leads was just so good. The screenplay was perfect. Sadly, we are likely to see a few mediocre performances in lead actress and a female-less best director category, when these three ladies are right here!January 4, 2020 at 11:52 pm #1203260721
I actually want to drop Adam Driver. Him and Scarlett Johansson were not that good, and this is mainly due to a bad script and weak direction.
I disagree with parts of this but I do agree Driver’s performance, whilst very solid, has been overhyped from the beginning. Scarlett is better in this movie. Regardless, I’m pretty confident Driver is absolutely getting in. He’s built up huge amounts of good will and is the male darling of the industry currently.
On another note, I watched Uncut Gems recently and was seriously unimpressed by the movie generally and Adam Sandler specifically. I’m shocked he’s loosely in the discussion here. Better than he usually is, yes, but still not good.January 2, 2020 at 12:22 pm #1203256833
Yes Emily!January 2, 2020 at 10:41 am #1203256739
Just got back from seeing Bombshell. I thought Charlize was great. I’m British so am not overly familiar with Megyn Kelly so cant speak to likeness, but that aside the performance is a compelling one. Her and SJ are my two favourite leading performances so far this year. I still think Renee has the slight edge but I’m not as enamoured by that performance as others are. A nomination, sure, but not win.December 30, 2019 at 2:23 am #1203253793
This was so bad. And not believable ending AT ALL.
Nothing about the show is believable, but I still enjoy itDecember 28, 2019 at 3:35 am #1203252209
I’m sad to say I felt Ronan’s performance lacking. It pains me to say this as I am a fan and was expecting big things from this performance but, to me at least, it felt too forced. I wouldn’t mind if she misses this year.December 28, 2019 at 3:32 am #1203252206
Having seen Little Women, I have to say Florence Pugh stole the show and Laura Dern was surprisingly good and heartwarming (much better than in Marriage Story imo).
Agree totally! I was so pleasantly surprised by Dern. Pugh I’d expected because notices for her had been swirling for some time, but she was still excellent. I was underwhelmed by the movie generally, which I was surprised by, as a big fan of the novels, Gerwig, and the cast.December 23, 2019 at 12:46 pm #1203248142
One of the leads will be an unknown or broadway actress
One doesn’t equate to the other. But I might be misunderstanding your comment.
Either way, I think it should be a broadway actress/actresses. It’s a broadway show with a big enough fan base to carry it to success if the casting is right. It doesn’t need big ‘stars’. In fact, that’s almost certainly what’ll ruin it.December 23, 2019 at 12:38 pm #1203248129
Extremely surprised to find myself rooting for Scarlett. Awkwafina was good but I’m struggling to identify with those who think her performance deserves a nomination, let alone a win. It seems like I’m in the minority but Zellweger to me was not the performance others claim it to be. I’ve yet to see Erivo, Theron and Ronan but it’s not the most exciting race in recent years.December 22, 2019 at 6:34 am #1203246855
I haven’t seen The Crown season 3 yet, I’m not the biggest fan (I know that amounts to sacrilege on GD) but I was so amazed by Aniston, I really hope she receives some accolades.December 21, 2019 at 2:11 am #1203246029
I finally saw Marriage Story. I say this as somebody who, before this, actively thought ScarJo lacked talent and ability. She definitely deserves a nomination, I’d be fine with a win and am I the only one who thought she was better than Adam Driver?December 20, 2019 at 1:19 pm #1203245754
I haven’t posted in awhile. Aniston was astonishing in the last episode. Gugu also. My issue is them having the victim commit suicide which, for sure, happens. Couldn’t we have chosen a different route? The drug overdose was linked to one very brief prior moment where we saw Gugu take drugs (coke, where it looks like she OD’d on fentanyl or something). She deserved better. The victim serves the story of the enablers, again. I liked the show. I championed it, really, but this is really the part I can’t get over.November 8, 2019 at 2:49 pm #1203171611
