I haven’t gotten to episode 9 yet oops (but you’ve made me look forward to something!) I totally agree with your rave review of season 1 of Pose (which I think is an understatement but still quite a nice thing to read from a fellow poster).
I find you so confusingJuly 8, 2020 at 10:53 pm #1203577364
I watched this today and thought it was pretty good. The performances were great and Yvonne Strahovski should definitely be considered for next year’s awards. The other standouts from the series, for me, were Asher Keddie and Fayssal Bazzi. Cate Blanchett was perfect as usual but she has too little screentime compared to the rest of the cast.
I would think this is by design. As much as I love Cate, I’m glad to see she’s providing other capable actors with a showcase.July 8, 2020 at 10:47 pm #1203577362
Garner has a much bigger role than McTeer. McTeer’s role was expanded this season, but Garner is a borderline lead, where McTeer is definitely supporting. McTeer will probably be nominated, but I think Garner could still overcome votesplitting for a win because A) her character is the fan favorite, B) her performance is pretty widely regarded as better, and C) she has the more important and bigger role.
Is it?July 8, 2020 at 6:09 am #1203573481

The critics and awards websites better push Michaela Coel and I May Destroy You like they did Waller-Bridge and Fleabag because they’re genuinely comparable (Coel probably gives a better performance actually). I’d like to see the same energy.
I really do think Coel’s performance here is quire revelatory, particularly as the series progresses, and very obviously superior to PWBs. That said, I do not anticipate awards replication, which is unfortunate. Her direction is incredibly strong too, particularly in episodes 9 & 10, and it goes without saying that the writing is some of the most powerful and incisive on TV.July 6, 2020 at 1:40 pm #1203570812
I’m in the UK so I’ve just finished the final two episodes and I continue to be blown away by this show.July 6, 2020 at 11:42 am #1203570549
Good. Ratings, such as Netflix counts them, must’ve been unimpressive to continue long-term.
It isn’t ratings. Really how many seasons can a show with this premise have? It’s the right decision.July 4, 2020 at 1:07 pm #1203566674
I like Moss’s performance but the fact Moss has an Emmy but Strahovski doesn’t is bizarre. Fingers crossed that if Strahovski loses this year that she takes revenge and wins two Emmys next year for THT and Stateless.
It’s not bizarre though. Moss had a very clear route to a win and immense goodwill from Mad Men. Strahovski has never had that. Though I agree her performance is consistently amongst the best on the show and totally worthy of a win.July 4, 2020 at 12:54 pm #1203566667
The Academy has embraced violent movies before, and Eggers seems to be very much a director the industry is excited by. I could see it happening, in theory.July 2, 2020 at 5:25 am #1203562655
Paramount has acquired the distribution rights for The United States Vs. Billie Holiday, according to Deadline’s article, the plan is for it to be a major awards season release.
So we have Andra Day as Billie Holiday, Jennifer Hudson as Aretha, and Viola as Ma Rainey all vying for awards attention as iconic singers this year. Interesting.July 1, 2020 at 12:00 pm #1203561039
Same problem as last year, two or three are gonna get lost in the shuffle or won’t make it to awards season. Their problem is that they think that with more movies they’re gonna have a better chance at a picture win but they don’t know how to prioritize and campaign all movies. Some get lost in the shuffle and then comes a studio with a one strong movie campaign and wins picture. Also being a streaming platform doesn’t help.
I think this will work in their favour this time around.June 30, 2020 at 11:47 pm #1203560308
I hope it goes well for JHud. I would have preferred a mini series because Aretha’s career expanded from the 50s to the 90s with hit songs.
I believe this is in the works too. NatGeo starring Cynthia Erivo, though it’s been pushed back. I actually think this is a better casting decision, regardless of JHud being chosen by Aretha.
