Olivia and HBC on graham Norton in U.K. both hilarious!November 8, 2019 at 2:34 pm #1203171600
Olivia Colman. Love her but that performance being so revered is strange to me.November 8, 2019 at 2:03 pm #1203171546
The Airbnb woman was obvious, otherwise why include. I enjoyed.November 8, 2019 at 2:00 pm #1203171543
Karen was amazing with the ‘up the back alley’ comment. Debra M continues to overact to such a degree that I find it embarrassingNovember 8, 2019 at 1:56 pm #1203171540
So I’ve seen the first 3 episodes now. And I’m literally in total disbelief at how truly awful this is. The writing and acting is absolutely abysmal. Like, I literally can’t believe it. It’s just so, so terrible. I thought it would probably be mediocre, but I didn’t expect this. One of the worst shows I’ve seen in a long time. There are certainly worse shows out there (like Riverdale) but out of the shows that try to pass themselves off as prestige dramas, this is possibly the worst I’ve ever seen.
Oh come on! It seems like you’re trying to be controversial here. I would like to say I respect your opinion but it’s simply not as bad as you say it is, so I don’t.November 8, 2019 at 1:47 pm #1203171530
@jaket Jackie Cooper, Skippy Brandon De Wilde, Shane Jack Wild, Oliver! That’s all I could find.
Thanks Teri. I have to say, I’d written this movie off because it’s not my taste, but Greg likes it and he’s one of the users here who I tend to agree with. So I’ll wait and see, but I do think no matter how amazing Roman is, he will not be nominated. There’s such a prejudice against young performers and studios know this, so don’t campaign them, except in such rare circumstances.November 7, 2019 at 2:04 pm #1203170171
It is rare for an actor so young to be nominated, but it’s also rare to have a Best Picture frontrunner with such a young lead actor. In the past, serious BP contenders with young leads have had their young leads nominated.
Thanks, I’m aware, but do you have recent examples? Again, I haven’t yet seen the movie but the reviews Roman is getting seem stronger than some others we consider BA leaders. It’d be nice if performance meant everything, but we know it doesn’t.November 7, 2019 at 12:37 pm #1203170098
I’m amazed the Academy is still watching THT. I was a fan, less so as it progressed, and have little interest now. Wider support may not have waned just yet, but it has to be imminent. The acting is still strong because the cast are super talented, but almost everything else has been inconsistent.November 7, 2019 at 12:20 pm #1203170074
It’s interesting because amongst those who have seen the movie (I have not) Roman is the clear standout. But it’s so highly unusual for an actor this young to receive academy recognition. Even if he is as good as people say, the odds are against him. I’m more comfortable predicting Thomasin because the category is ostensibly less clear, she has a decent filmography to date and her profile is rising. People caveat this by saying Scarlett is better in the film, but she’ll be taken care of with MS and I just can’t see her being a double nominee. Thomasin is the natural next choice.November 6, 2019 at 2:21 pm #1203168990
Since Roman is the most widely-praised performance in the movie, and he’s way behind in the Best Actor category, I doubt they will push Thomasin, another child actor, in. Scarlett’s their best bet in the acting categories, and I think even she will miss.
I haven’t seen the movie yet but this is a bit of a non sequitur. Just because he’s unlikely to make it despite his degree of praise doesn’t mean she won’t (in a less clear category). He has factors working against him, and she has quite a few in her favour.November 6, 2019 at 12:29 pm #1203168773
I’m not expecting this, but I could see Hinkle winning if the popular consensus is that she’s better than Borstein this season. Maisel’s clearly got very strong support from actors, and we saw this year in both Supporting Actress and Guest Actor that the more well received of the two nominated performances didn’t suffer from vote splitting. But like I said, I don’t see that happening. Borstein will likely have the bigger and showier role like she did the past two seasons, and therefore she’ll be more competitive for the nomination and win.
I think even if Hinkle were to give a superior performance, support would remain with Borstein. I was really glad when Hinkle received her nomination. It’s been some time since I watched S2 but I remember, for me personally, there not being much in it between the two whereas in S1 I thought Borstein gave (very clearly) the better performance.
