Basically, till 2014, all winners were selected by panels of volunteers, who watched episodes chosen by the nominees to represent their work. The number varied (usually a small amount) depending on different categories and you could only vote in like 2-3 categories at most. For most of the categories, the voters ranked the nominees in order of preference so the concept of vote-splitting was virtually non-existent. An additional nominee was seen as a boon rather than a hindrance for a show. This is what is known as the old system. Since voters would usually judge a performance based on a single episode, which we call the tape, the people with more baity, loud and dominant work would win over more subtle ones. Having a bad submission would basically kill your chance even if you were the presumed frontrunner. In 2015, they did away with the panels in general and everyone could vote in all categories from their specialisation and the program categories. The ranked ballot was still kept though. They went to popular vote in 2016, where you just vote for the nominee you’d like to prevail. The rest was carried over from 2015. This is what basically constitutes the new system and gave rise to the concept of ‘vote-splitting’.

I started following the emmys in 2017, and reading through posts in goldderby recently, there has been talk of “under the old system or in the current system” if anyone can kindly explain how emmy noms and winners were decided before they switched to the new system, how did it work and how did it disadvantage some performance- I read somewhere that Under the current system, Sandra Oh would have won for greys Anatomy.July 8, 2021 at 4:59 am #1204334122
Out of all categories this is the one where atleast we have a head start. A lot will happen during the season but we can be 10000% sure that the winner in this category will be white, we just have to figure out which white woman it will be. We can rule out all the WOC as early as now ( As much as people might want it to happen, it won’t) they will all be fighting for the fifth spot, its even likely they dont get nominated.May 27, 2021 at 1:39 am #1204274755

Can they just give Thuso Mbedu the emmy, the superb work she does shouldn’t go unrewarded, such a strong year in her category and the weakest performance -Anya Taylor- is going to win. I love Kate and she keeps on topping herself every week but I dont buy for a second she’ll will win, she’ll get a nom and that’s it, a la Cate Blanchett.May 23, 2021 at 2:37 pm #1204267897
If The Crown wins Drama Series, it isn’t walking away without Corrin AND O’Connor wins. The actors branch have become lazier and lazier as of late and the faces of shows tend to win when the show takes series (with the exception of Chernobyl).
Reading through posts and I know this was posted long ago but Really!! The actors branch are apparently lazy? not to be rude but this half ass assumption is just too lazy to hold water, it’s worse than the ” international voters won’t vote for it” , ” actors aren’t watching it anymore ” or “they didnt watch past episode 4” Maybe emmy voters just liked the show plus the faces of the show,There are tons of reasons why The Crown actors are going to win but none of them includes the actors branch being lazy.May 17, 2021 at 2:53 am #1204258110
Watched Halston and there is no way Ewan McGregor is getting In for that mess, unless he gets better past episode 2( that’s all I could stomach watching) Netflix really gave Ryan 300 million and so far it’s been one flop after the other. Also I am currently watching TUR and I think Chase Dillon is getting in, this young boy out here out acting his competition. Joel edgerton seems poised to win. Anya Taylor Joy position as the frontrunner keeps on shrinking each and every time-though she is still very much winning. If she had not swept the precursors I would have her fourth after Michaela, Winslet and Mbedu( she kills it, I hope she becomes a serious contender for best supporting actress for woman KIng at the oscars)May 8, 2021 at 1:01 pm #1204247070
I got around to watching this show finally and it was pretty disappointing. I echo those who found it entertaining. I too was strangely enthralled by the show. But the writing is so soapy and ludicrous that I just couldn’t take anything seriously. And, I think I am the only one who found the ending particularly underwhelming. The premise of this show was really excellent but it completely failed in exploring it. They could have done so much better and with so much more nuance. All I saw was Reese Witherspoon shouting and Jennifer Aniston throwing temper tantrums. It was only Gubu Mbatha Raw and Karen Pitman’s acting that stuck with me. This is a high class misfire and could have been a more in in depth analysis of the what goes behind the synthesis of a toxic work environment. Not preachy monologues. The ending scene especially was not at all grounded in reality. I get that this is soapy entertainment but some of made no sense. Especially Hanna’s suicide?! Was Alex waiting for someone to die to realize the magnanimity of the problem? Her character switched at the very last moment. There was something about this show that seemed so artificial. I really hope they have some major revision for the next season and bring in some authenticity rather than some foolish histrionics. Again, I love the actors involved and I am really happy for Jen who broke out of her mold but I just couldn’t like this show.
You basically summed up what I felt about the show. It’s an expensive misfire, Reese giving the same one note performance, Jen trying her best with an underwritten awful script, Steve giving the worst performance of his career. The boardroom scene – I can’t believe they shot that scene, watched it, edited it and actually thought that was something they could present on TV. Jen’s character splashing water on some producer, that to me was the lowest point of the show. Dont even get me started on Hanna the black women having to die for the white lead to finally have a social reawakening. With the 300 million spent on that show, they could have hired better writers.May 7, 2021 at 9:02 am #1204245873
The way Halston reviews could be a total mess, with Ryan Murphy you never know what to expect, the trailers always look phenomenal- just look at Ratched- I am actually looking forward for the reviews more than the show itself.May 7, 2021 at 7:58 am #1204245805
I think what we might not be considering is that alot of Grammys voters dont even vote in first round voting, that’s why Scooter Braun, for instance is able to mobilise the few voters he knows to actually vote for his clients, not just Scooter but record labels also do this with their clients .With increased emphasis on all voters to actually vote and the requalification process, I think we might be looking at a different academy altogether. The ” old white dudes” as we call them who haven’t made music since the 80s will no longer be able to vote. I think the requalification process is probably the most important change that the academy needed, the voters will be more attuned to the prevailing trends in music and not some random dude who doesn’t make music and name checks their favourite artist. With atleast 3/4 of the voting body actually voting, I dont see how Beiber makes it in ( last year there was a report that said only about 500 members took part in nomination voting, pop was really low) neither does Ariana in the GF, also I think we’ll start seeing more general distribution in the GF when it comes to genres. I also think we might go back to the early 2010s era where many alternative and rock albums won AOTY. With pop and probably RnB and Rap scoring major nominations, the one country or Rock album that appeals to alt, rock, country voters may win , and ofcourse cross genre appealing music. Artists who will benefit from this greatly are Billie Eillish, Taylor swift ( if she continues moving away from pop, she has country votes locked, they wont nominate her in country categories but when there are no country albums in AOTY , they’ll pick her, pop love her even if she doesn’t win there, they nominated Rep and YNTCD for heaven sakes, and has been made apparent alt rock voters are willing to lean towards her) Bruno Mars( need I explain, Bruno Mars is cross genre appeal) , Black Pumas, Anderson Paak. We might never see an album like Djesse vol get in. In short if you are not a respected big artist like the one mentioned above or like H.E.R, Beyonce,Kendrick Adele, you will need a really big and critically acclaimed album to get in the GF.May 7, 2021 at 2:44 am #1204245624
I will never forgive Taylor if she doesn’t release BTR on speak Now (TV) or even if she changes the lyrics . If she pulls that shit, I am unstuning. The song is a classic that was written by an angry 20 year old and it should be appreciated that way.May 6, 2021 at 12:10 pm #1204244981
Okay now why is MINE sounding like her best song? That bridge” braced my self for the goodbyes” wow, speak now been sounding fresh lately, Haunted acoustic version!!! Starting to think it’s her best album, after Folklore and Evermore ofcourse. Also one thing I realised is Taylor success comes from having a core fan base, which other artist would have released an album like folklore in 2020 and have it sell like that? Taylor doesn’t need hits at this point, her fans will listen to her shit. She doesn’t need to rely on gimmicks or anything, all she has to do is focus on her art, release good music and the fans will do the rest.Artists like Drake, Ariana , Beiber all need hits, they need the GP. Taylor releasing Evermore out of nowhere and it still got more first day streams than Positions.May 6, 2021 at 4:30 am #1204244478
Your power sounded so familiar but I couldn’t put my hands on which song she ripped off. I’ve finally figured it out, it rips off skinny love and Re: stacks ( especially this one)by bon iver, from the guitar playing at the beginning ( it combines elements of both with Re: stacks being more prominent) the first verse sounds EXACTLY the same as the first verse of Re:stacks same tune, same melody. Where is the originality? The song is basically Re:stacks with different lyrics.
