Big Hero 6 also lost out the Annie and the BAFTA (and the PGA) but still won the Oscar. Also, recently, Kubo won the BAFTA but Zootopia won everything else.
I do acknowledge that Best Animated Feature is definitely gonna be a toss up this year, but I wouldn’t put a ton of stock into jusst those two awards to determine the winner. If there’s no…[Read more]

The meeting scene when Hoffa is pissed off that he had to wait more than 15 minutes.
The Gestapo scene was one of the most tense scenes in a film I watched last year. And this was a comedy!

– They usually put a one or two cute animal shorts(Kitbull), something emotional about family, usually a sick or dead parent (Hair Love), a comedic one (Hors Piste), and something that’s stop motion (Sister) in this category. I didn’t see Dcera, but it just looked interesting.

If Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore could both win Oscars during a voting period where Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son, respectively, were playing in theaters, I think Adam Driver is going to be fine.
DGA likes to nominate directors who work with first-time child actors (see: Garth Davis for Lion) that may or may not translate to an Oscar nomination.
Weirdly, the Oscars like nominating them, too. Especially if they show up literally nowhere else and in favor over a “sure” nominee (see: Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild over Ben…[Read more]
Whoa. I was Top 6 in this leaderboard?? How random. I think that’s the highest rank I’ve ever gotten. Also, it seems the most anyone got was 5/7. Best Director and Actress really came out of nowhere, it seems.
While I’m excited for whatever happens with this, the material is definitely gonna be difficult to translate to film. The best parts of the musical are Alison talking back in time to her father or reacting to things her younger self did (“Changing My Major” and “Telephone Wire” come to mind). Also, the part where her house disappears as she’s…[Read more]
Whoa. I actually got 6th in the leaderboards. Wasn’t expecting that. I guess my biggest risks I took were Gideon Glick for Featured Actor, Ain’t Too Proud for Director, and Ruth Wilson for King Lear.
Still, no one could have predicted the TKAM snub for Best Play and Glenda Jackson not being in the Top 6 of her category.
Toni Collette was also starring in a divisive film directed by a relative unknown in the industry making his debut feature. It was entirely driven by her performance and the awards it contended for showed that. Plus, her film was released relatively early on (when critics start voting and other actresses’ films hadn’t released yet).

The white hat-vs-black hat Westerns as most people know it peaked in the 1950s, a time when the Red Scare was reaching its own peak and American-ism was something to be celebrated and revered, characterized by the lone cowboy standing up to a criminal gang (see: High Noon, 1952). The Technicolor films also made Western movies an epic genre.
Every single scientist I’ve seen in a movie drastically overestimates the reach of their knowledge. Oh, he’s an ecologist? I’m sure he’s a wonderful mathematician/physicist as well. A lot of Marvel “doctors” are very guilty of this. It’s just a convenient way to move the plot along without introducing new characters.

Kendrick and SZA will not be performing at the Oscars.
Jim Sturgess as Paul McCartney
Joe Anderson as Kurt Cobain
Basically the main cast of “Across the Universe” starring in a biopic of their musical counterparts. Whoever did the casting on that film was a genius.
