keithw replied to the topic Who was second to George C. Scott and Marlon Brando when the declined Oscar in the forum Movies 1 month, 3 weeks ago
I think the (distant) runner-up to George C. Scott would have been Ryan O’Neal for “Love Story”. The movie was a huge hit and he was great in it. For Marlon Brando I suspect the runner-up was Olivier, though maybe Caine. Paul Winfield was basically a supporting role and “The Ruling Class” was not really that popular. “Sleuth” also received a…[Read more]

I saw Joan Hackett’s performance in “Only When I Laugh” mentioned here…..she should have won! So great!

Last night I watched an older movie (the 70s) that I had not seen since I was a kid….”Soylent Green” starring Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson (in his last role). It was okay….but Robinson was great! I read that he died just 12 days after completing the film.
1. Robin Williams, Good Will Hunting
2. Jack Palance, City Slickers
3. Gene Hackman, Unforgiven
4. James Coburn, Affliction
5. Michael Caine, The Cider House Rules
6. Martin Landau, Ed Wood
7. Kevin Spacey, The Usual Suspects
8. Joe Pesci, Goodfellas
9. Tommy Lee Jones, The Fugitive
10. Cuba Gooding Jr., Jerry Macguire
Best – the 70s for sure….American Graffiti, Nashville, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Cabaret, The Last Picture Show, The French Connection, Klute, Network, Rocky, A Touch of Class, Pete n Tillie, The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, Coming Home, The Deer Hunter, Butterflies Are Free, The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Harry &…[Read more]
keithw replied to the topic Best Supporting Actress- Are it's Days Of Being The Wildcard Category Over? in the forum Movies 3 months ago
The year that Eileen Heckart won I think both Shelley Winters & Jeannie Berlin were favoured. Geraldine Page had several nominations (and was so great in “Pete n Tillie”) but didn’t likely stand a chance and Susan Tyrell was lucky to be nominated. All 5 performances were so great!
I totally agree about Art Carney (Harry & Tonto) and Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) being very deserving winners. I have seen all the nominees in the years they won and would have voted for both of them.

It was good to see Julia Roberts & Barbra Streisand presenting but more stars of that calibre could have been included…..and a couple of “older” winners like Cloris Leachman. Cicely Tyson was there….she could have presented.
I’m not really interested in any of these presenters…..they need some of the older winners to present….It was so great to see Eva Marie Saint & Rita Moreno last year…..what about Cloris Leachman or Gene Hackman this year? It would be amazing to have Kim Novak back and make her feel appreciated. I still remember Ellen’s introduction of…[Read more]
