BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Jesse Plemons – The Power of the Dog
How come some of y’all are just predicting Plemons to get an acting nomination for The Power of the Dog and not the other 2? I haven’t read the book but from the people who have read it they say his character is the least “interesting” out of the 3 main players so how does Plemons get in and not Cumberbatch and Dunst. It’d be like if Laura Dern got in for Marriage Story without Driver and Johannson.June 20, 2021 at 4:04 pm #1204310366
I didn’t see “Passing” on Sundance (I’ve read the book), however I know people who saw it and all of them believe Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga and Andre Holland are all Oscar worthy. Then again, this “not the Oscar thing” is silly because the campaign is what makes the movie an oscar thing. It may not be the winner but if it was purchased by non other than NETFLIX soon after Sundance then there is no reason to believe they’ll not work on it.
I actually think Netflix buying Passing was a bad thing to happen to it because it will most likely get buried underneath their bigger contenders like Don’t Look Up and The Power of the Dog.
I wouldn’t say Andre Holland is Oscar-worthy in it lol I don’t really remember his performance and Tessa Thompson is very good but for a lead actress nomination, it’s too small and she is overshadowed by Negga in my opinion.
Just look at the reception on Letterboxd compared to something like Mass, it does not elicit the same passionate response as the latter does.June 20, 2021 at 12:54 pm #1204310170
Bruh. Just stop with that “its not their thing” BS. You simply dont know at all. We have been proven wrong numerous times
I’ve seen Passing too and I agree with George, it’s not the Oscar-bait black & white period piece that y’all think it is. Rebecca Hall obviously doesn’t have the filmography like David Fincher that would get Academy voters to watch and vote for her movie. Having said that, I do think Ruth Negga is amazing in it and I think there’s a strong chance that Netflix just pushes hard for her and gets her to a nomination.June 15, 2021 at 8:19 pm #1204302201
I have some faith that Mass can take off because apparently Bleecker does know what they have on their hands and is gonna campaign it, that was confirmed to me by one of the film’s producers (the same one who told me that Bleecker Street picked it up before it was officially announced). That said, I don’t have enough faith in the movie to put it in Picture. I would like it to get at least one or two nominations, which is totally possible but we’ll see.
Yeah it just needs good word of mouth where people simply just watch it. No amount of written reviews, videos, reactions etc. can accurately describe how phenomenal the acting is. I think people are dismissing it because they think it’s just another The Assistant or Captain Fantastic handled by Bleecker St. I honestly don’t see the point of the Actors branch or SAG or whatever if they don’t at least nominate Plimpton and Dowd.May 20, 2021 at 9:35 pm #1204264171
Pitt by far. I’d take his amazingly consistent filmography any day over Depp’s hit or miss movies, some of which are truly horrendous like Willy wonka. Pitt is just an all around more talented industry member, look at all his producing credits.May 20, 2021 at 1:39 pm #1204263675
Yes, Ben looks way too old for this role and it will be distracting. But nothing will ever beat the Mank team thinking they could get away with Gary Oldman passing for a 33 year old man in some of the flashback scenes. And he got away with it!May 18, 2021 at 4:20 pm #1204260942
Dowd being the only nom for Mass would be really strange. It will either be shut out completely or get the 3 acting noms(add Plimpton & Isaacs) + screenplay package. Those are the only 2 paths I see for it.May 18, 2021 at 12:19 pm #1204260554
Only musical theater people are going to love this. This will get lukewarm reception at best. That trailer was manipulating AF lol and way too longMay 18, 2021 at 11:58 am #1204260500
Once Don’t Look Up is panned, Power of the Dog will become Netflix’s main push.May 18, 2021 at 11:25 am #1204260405
I’m confused why some are predicting JHud to win for Respect. Is the Academy really going to give her 2 Oscars, this time in lead, to an “actress” who is mainly known for her singing. She showed up out of nowhere in 2006 and wowed everyone and then hibernated for 15 years and now we think they’re just gonna give her another Oscar for the most obvious role she could do. I don’t buy itMay 17, 2021 at 7:38 pm #1204259352
Also……like…..this industry nominates people every year who there was no evidence they “cared about” until suddenly they do / or more likely, they appear in BP films. It’s hardly some vast conspiracy.
Exactly. It’s like saying Scarlett Johansson won’t get in for Marriage Story because the Academy never cared about her in the past. If Power of the Dog gets strong reviews at its Venice premiere, Dunst is happening everywhere along with Cumberbatch and it will be a long overdue nomination like Johansson.
