Finished this season of Motherland and was struck by how much its grown into a confident, charismatic show in its third season. It’s a real shame Julia is the main character as, great as Anna Maxwell Martin is in it, I always want to spend more time with the supporting cast.
Of all the supporting cast, it’s Tanya Moodie for me as the MVP this season. They really gave her character so much more nuance this year in just five episodes. The scene on Mother’s Day where she opens the door at the end of the day in tears… she was just fabulous. And Lucy Punch remains one of the most underrated comic actresses out there. Both nom-worthy.
Such a shame we don’t get Guest Actress at BAFTA – Joanna Lumley vs Minnie Driver would be a wondrous battle.October 21, 2021 at 9:07 am #1204530159
I knew people way way overestimate “The Worst Person of the World” as favourite to win this category (or even becoming a broad contender in main categories). Romantic comedies/dramedies don’t tell to be nominated anymore in this category (Unless these came with a realistical acting contender, and we know Reinsve has lost the steam over Cruz). And less if these stories are too feminine. When they nominate a female driven story, it’s often a dramatic one based on a social and political issue or related to an specific trope (WWII for example).
In the prior system with 9 nominees I would predict this film as one of the main snubbed contenders. But yeah, after not being in the Top 3 per TIFF, this film lost big numbers over a more competitive race.October 21, 2021 at 9:06 am #1204530157
I feel so bad for Nikolas. Obviously he should not have fake stabbed Spencer and probably should have considered that he was terrorizing Trina, Cam and Joss in addition to Spencer, but I don’t think it was nearly as horrible a plan as Laura was making it out to be. Laura came down on him really hard. It felt especially harsh when she started talking about Florence Grey. I can understand that she expects less from someone like Carly and is less concerned about her moral compass (I guess, though honestly Laura just seems very on board with all of Carly’s crap, which I really dislike), but to act like Nikolas is so much worse than Carly in that scenario is kind of absurd. She immediately betrayed Laura’s trust to kidnap an elderly woman. I also did not need Carly coming in to get in Nikolas’s face about his parenting. Her track record is abysmal. No one should be as cool as they’ve been about Joss being approached by Joey Novak considering that mob-related stuff got Morgan killed and Michael both put in a coma and sent to prison where he was raped. Anyway, I look forward to eventually getting my ‘Nikolas Was Right’ tee shirt with Marcus Coloma’s pretty face on the back. Not now
