Gucci is a big, bold, operatic film – voters might love the scope and effort it took to write it especially after watching a bunch of smaller movies.January 12, 2022 at 4:27 pm #1204722683
many of Scorsese’s films are biopics, yet we never think of them as such.
The Last Temptation of Christ
Hugo (the Melies stuff)
I think there’s an abyss between a Biographical Film / a movie based on someone vs a Biopic.
Mishima is one of the most artful films I’ve ever seen and it’s about a person’s life. Same thing with Control, Il Divo or Diving Bell and the Butterfly. But these films took a person’s life and made something quite subliminal out of it. They transcended their “biographical notes”.
Biopics in my mind are lazy “and then, and then, and then” stories that usually check a list of predictable beats. They rely almost entirely on the fact that the central figure is popular enough to draw an audience. Usually they’re films about musicians. Should we expect more Rotten Tomatoes reviews or is that it?
it’s at 314 right now = 62%December 11, 2021 at 11:48 am #1204644315
Sir, you have already made your point: you hate the film. Why linger around here? Surely it’s more interesting to discuss films you respect? I hated Avengers but I didn’t spend my time on forums making sure people knew that. It’s boring.December 11, 2021 at 11:24 am #1204644247
What’s your point?
They didn’t make a cancer drama. If Power of the Dog was getting lampooned I’d be surprised- but Gucci was always a pop culture torpedo and with that comes comedy gold.
Really? Because from my layman’s armchair it seems WSS has got across the board rave reviews. Which cannot be said about HOG which is getting lampooned and memed… watch out for SNL tonight. Billie Eilish can do a great Gaga and would be poetic justice for the abuse she got from Gaga’s fans when she was 17. And cast member Chloe Fineman had already been sending up the movie on her insta, so I anticipate there will be a sketch.December 9, 2021 at 7:32 am #1204639767
Yeah well if they don’t post these soon it’ll turn rotten very fast
Do we know if there’s any negative ones waiting in the wings?December 7, 2021 at 1:36 pm #1204634594

I can’t take you seriously. “Brody”? You watched 26 minutes of a 2.5 hour movie (regardless of whether you think that’s too long)
I don’t know about the rest of the movie from minute 26 or so, when I interrupted it after the sex scene, but the beginning was awful, like deliberately awful. I can’t explain myself why. Lady gaga is the only reason if this movie, that seems more like one of the worst 2000ish trash Italian tv movie, isn’t horrible. I attribute all the fault to the director, obviously. You can’t be Ridley Scott and think that this garbage could be watchable only because you have a really good story to tell and a really good name to sell it. every choice he made in the first 30min were only ridiculous for a respectible storyteller like him. really insulting. Irons and Brody, especially the last one, weren’t good at all. but it’s the screenplay that is stupid, the scenografy is bad, the soundtrack is a joke and the fact that the potential was all there is mortifying. That sex scene was literally horrible. Gaga will be the only nomination of this mess. edit: I watched also the marriage scene, so dramatically funny.December 5, 2021 at 2:12 pm #1204628369
Less than two weeks. It was released on November 24. Barely 10 days ago.
and it still hasn’t hit a bunch of big territories…
i think it can make 200m theatrical when all is said and done. It’ll make double that on streaming. Maybe 500m Total?December 5, 2021 at 2:09 pm #1204628365
There’s just no way West Side Story is getting anywhere this year considering the insane competition. I feel similarly about Macbeth. I can’t believe people have it in their “best adapted screenplay” predictions. It’s a very faithful Shakespeare adaptation ffs. it’s strengths are in the visuals, the performances- certainly not in the editorializing of the materialDecember 3, 2021 at 4:01 pm #1204624696
Why even care? He’s a blob. An ignorant, self-absorbed blob who unfortunately was given a (very small) platform.December 2, 2021 at 7:03 pm #1204621854
Up to 63% on RT.
Let’s hope the tide turns and the remaining reviews are positive . I have hope the box office makes a difference to how it is received by critics who have yet to chime in.
is 65-68% totally unrealistic?December 2, 2021 at 9:59 am #1204620125
Who runs it?December 1, 2021 at 3:45 pm #1204618167
as with all things Hollywood, the Globes will go through a “mea culpa” phase, but I see them coming back just as strong as ever – the questions is whether this year will be seen as a transitional year or whether they can pick up the pieces RIGHT NOW and make it happen. Not now
