I’m thinking that this, if good, should earn her at least a Golden Globe nomination and maybe CCA too?

Eh every movie has music in some form. In the case of Joker 2, I don’t think it’ll be a musical. I think they’ll just make use of Gaga’s voice to make a few fun scenes where they’re singing and incorporate into the storyline. Kinda like ASIB.

March 13, 2023 at 1:14 am #1205349837Maybe unpopular opinion, but I don’t think “Navalny” is a good win. If you’re awarding the documentary merely based on the political situation, might as well award “A House Made of Splinters”. At least it’s not problematic.
This win is very likely to upset the very same side that the Oscars voters tried to recognize. He is very controversial in Ukraine because of his positions about Crimea, and the fact that he participated in Russian nationalist/imperialists rallies. Ironically he justified it in this nominated documentary.
Just another example of Oscar voters being very uneducated on world issues even when they mean well.

Okay, a shitty propaganda documentary is not what I had in mind when I talked about anti-war.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 11:19 pm #1205349729Hollywood likes to make movies about wars, but their tone deafness about real wars always amaze me.
Remember when they booed Michael Moore for criticizing the war in Iraq in 2003. Tonight not a single word about about Ukraine, not last year, not this year. The only mention of the topic came from Navalny himself in his relayed statement.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 9:30 pm #1205349434Ranking Gaga’s performances is really difficult, but here’s my attempt:
1. Sound of Music, 2015 (the depth in this performance is just incredible)
Reply
2. Shallow, 2019
3. Till It Happens To You, 2016
4. Hold My Hand, 2023March 12, 2023 at 8:40 pm #1205348994All the people who kept talking about how SAG is full of “tiktokers” take a seat now. We’re literally watching the emergence of the single most important precursor now. 5/5 a second year in a row, just incredible.

Let’s hope it’s only the begining. The first non-white actress to win in two decades. Incredible when you put it that way.
ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 8:32 pm #1205348870For the second year in a row, BAFTA is wrong and SAG is right. I wonder if a new trend is emerging.

ReplyMarch 12, 2023 at 7:58 pm #1205348261Well they kinda gave the best performance of the night, even if I don’t personally like the song. So there’s that.
March 12, 2023 at 7:38 pm #1205347915I really didn’t enjoy this year’s performances, except for Naatu Naatu a bit.
But it really makes me appreciate some past performances, especially Shallow, Till It Happens To You, Sound of Music, Skyfall and Lose Yourself.
