There was a lack of “passion” with Silk Sonic on those anonymous ballots last year, which tells me enough about those things.
this and the “alphabetical advantage” on the ballots are just myths, I can’t believe I see people considering this here

ReplyJanuary 23, 2023 at 10:37 am #1205259103I honestly think that if this was any other category, there would be no doubt that the winner for alt album would be Bjork. By far the most famous name in the list, has been trendy lately, is the most nominated artist in this category, is overdue and a literal legend and an influence to pretty much everyone in the industry.
ReplyJanuary 12, 2023 at 7:58 pm #1205240436I was somewhat baffled at the F+TM snub, but looking back, it was predictable
I think their influence gets often overlooked, even if a shit-ton of these new alt-rock segments, mitski-esque artists and specially this “trendy” tumblr reminiscent teenage music for millenials that the UK loves to produce, like Wet Leg, owe so much for acts like Florence. She was one of those who opened the way back in 2009 for all of this, and while she has succeed in this, people rarely give her credit for it and I feel she received quite a load of bullshit for this.
Lowkey one of music’s unsung heroes.

December 21, 2022 at 3:58 am #1205203786I think this ceremony seals the coffin for this award tbh. You know things can’t be right when you have Vespertine, Amnesiac and Strange Little Girls up for an award and you decide to give it to Coldplay.
Years later and Coldplay being in AOTY is just even more salt added to the injury of the Grammys downfall in influence and respect. Serves them right though,

Based on your pfp I am kind of flattered lol
ReplyDecember 12, 2022 at 12:10 pm #1205191370There is no other place other than the United States, such a self absorbed and spectacle driven country, that could have possibly produced something so atrocious as Britney Spears and her wannabes. Really a cultural downfall and the pinnacle of the celebration of mediocrity, which now has turned into a funeral as we lament over her “over-exposure” as if her label wasn’t giving free copies of her albums in Walmarts, selling dolls and panties and whatever other product they deemed fit for this cabaret dancer using department clothing targeted towards young girls who were supposed to aim to be like her.
Now that it backfired, it’s tragedy, but when this prissy girl with a pink stripe on her hair, whose media personality back then consisted on infantile vocals over a stale electronic beat was broadcasted voicing her support for the Iraq invasion and commending Bush for “being the president” and saying “everyone should trust the president”, it was just another day.
I honestly can’t feel pity for her. I am actually quite glad she is done.
ReplyDecember 11, 2022 at 11:15 am #1205187912Beck beat St. Vincent for Alt Album. I think you mean him winning Eng for Hyperspace and losing to Fiona Apple, but Fossora is not even close to Fetch the Bolt Cutters’ acclaim. Besides that Beck album, the last 10 engineered winners went on to win in their genre, IIRC. That said, I agree Eng doesn’t seal the win for Wet Leg. But their album is easily the biggest in the bunch besides Arcade Fire and they do seem to have passion with the W placement. It’s also outperforming everyone’s album but Big Thief in the critics lists, and it’s pretty much neck and neck with them.
Yup, Fiona Apple, my brain got mixed up lol.
To be fairly honest, I can’t see this category being influenced by critic’s decision. Were this the case, Björk would have gotten hers a long time ago and Beck wouldn’t have won anything for his recent projects. This category in particular is always very dissonant to YE lists everywhere, anyways.
I also think that TIW had the same level of critical acclaim FTBC had, but it wasn’t released amidst a pandemic and became the ultimate pandemic music. Besides being critically acclaimed, we have to account the fact that Fiona is a legend and that her comeback after 10 years absent prompted her public presence in pop culture a lot in 2020. Voters knew who she was and what she was doing at said moment, which I think it’s the most important thing for those awards at the end of the day.
To be fairly honest, taking in account lobby, critical acclaim, commercial success and presence in popular media, I’d say it is between Björk, YYYs (don’t count them out…) and Big Thief. I still believe this category will follow its pattern of awarding past winners and nominees over new acts, that is why while I don’t totally count them out, I think Wet Leg will not take this one. After the sexual misconduct allegations, I also can’t see AF taking this for dear life. As for Björk’s case, for reasons stated, I still think this is her best chance and I really hope she wins. This category needs a pop/electronic act winning for once, and who better to do so than the most nominated pop/electronic act in the alt field.
Also, this category tends to have some odd results anyways. Beck was the only Eng Album winner that lost in his field in 10 years as you said, and that was the first time he got a nomination in the alt field but no nominations in the rock or pop categories as far as I know, while Fiona won rock song that night. AF have never won this award, despite having AOTY. Since the field has expanded this year, I am still wondering if the voter panel changed too.
ReplyDecember 5, 2022 at 9:24 am #1205178894Raye is having a lot of popularity on TikTok at the moment with her single ‘Escapism’, I wonder if she might get an R&B artist nomination? I really hope they make a separate R&B/Soul Act category, I am still mad that they lumped pop and R&B together.
I think it is even weirder considering rock has its own category? Anyways, maybe it is a little delusional, but I hope there is a R&B only field and FLO get some love.
ReplyDecember 5, 2022 at 9:22 am #1205178889Björk getting in those lists after three decades of career is just so nice to see
ReplyDecember 1, 2022 at 5:02 pm #1205174534tbh getting the number of nominees to 10 was lowkey a good move because it make the choices less obvious sometimes, this category being a solid example
pretty much everyone in it has a real chance
if the academy fully let go of some old habits it might be very positive for their somewhat decaying reputation and it should get them more audience

it would also make the race more exciting and less predictableWhy are you reporting this post? (optional):Not now
