Joanna Scanlan & Ann Dowd ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ I’m happy Zach Baylin will be there for King Richard! Had a feeling Will Smith & Aunjanue Ellis wouldn’t be there. I really don’t know why CC decided to have the award show on the same day as BAFTA’s. Pretty sure half the nominees are attending CC and the other half are attending BAFTA’s
Idk about Aunjanue but I don’t think Will is attending CCA either. Apparently he’s working on some other stuff? Idk tbh.March 10, 2022 at 7:16 am #1204839400
So I don’t think it necessarily matters much for BAFTA since voton opened and ended earlier. But Cumberbatch has been extremely open in his support of Ukraine, significantly more than most other celebrities. He talked at length about Ukraine and what to actually do and how to donate in his Hollywood Star speech. And yesterday when receiving his Cinema Vangard award at SBIFF (btw Pete Hammond mentioned that Cumberbatch’s event was the first sold out event of the festival apparently and that too on a Wednesday) fans were trying to pass him the Ukrainian flag and get him to talk about it and he actually held the flag up and again talked about it in his speech.
Ukraine is a huge talking point in Europe right now, especially in England and I do wonder if his genuine support for the cause might help him gain some of that European support.March 10, 2022 at 7:08 am #1204839389
An interesting thing one of the voters said on that BAFTA podcast: that many women voters might feel uncomfortable voting for Smith since it would mean ignoring the brilliance, hard work and talent of two women. I don’t know how much this thinking will impact some of the voters but I’ve seen some complaints in that regard here too.
You have a link to that podcast? I’m curious to listen to it now. Was Benedict mentioned as a potential winner?March 10, 2022 at 6:36 am #1204839362
Also, does BAFTA often correlate decently with LFCC or something? Since I’ve seen people use it here a few times.
Benedict and Kodi did both win LFCCMarch 10, 2022 at 6:34 am #1204839358
Anything can happen. But I truly don’t think Will Smith is winning BAFTA either. I hope he does
I’m fine with Will winning the Oscar but I really would like Benedict to win BAFTA because I think he deserves *something* for TPOTD.March 10, 2022 at 6:33 am #1204839356
I’m aware that discarding and betting against are two different things.
Help I’m confused because I’m genuinely asking if people are willing to overlook that since I’m very confused who to predict between Will and Benedict here. Malek is the only one to have won in 12 years without Film but Bale, while British, also didn’t have Best Film and I think Cumberbatch has more going for him than Bale.
So I have no idea who to predict.
Although apparently there was some podcast with a few BAFTA voters who said that Stephen and Benedict seemed to be the frontrunners for the category but that probably doesn’t matter lol.March 10, 2022 at 6:23 am #1204839339
<p style=”text-align: left;”>To the people not predicting Benedict for BAFTA and instead prediction Smith, are y’all discarding the Best Film/Best Actor stat?</p>

Yeah but Malek was playing icon Mercury and Cumberbatch is in a much stronger movie than Bale and with a more acclaimed performance. If my memory is correct Bale didn’t even win at the London critics which should have been a red flag. Nevertheless, I think Smith can ride the wave to a win but he’s in a more disadvantaged position than Malek whose movie also did better nomination wise.
Btw I’m curious, but is London Critics a decent indicator for BAFTA or something? I know that’s it’s a very prestigious critics group, up there with the trifecta but I’ve never focused on it for BAFTA noms or whatever. Cumberbatch won it this year and Smith missed a nomination.
Thank you for the answer! It makes sense.March 7, 2022 at 7:02 am #1204834633
(A) I’m predicting Benedict Cumberbatch to win the BAFTA and for me,it isn’t even a question. (B) I assume you mean Cumberbatch will be Malek and Bale would be like Smith. You have a solid point but Malek won SAG and GG as well other than BAFTA. Also, he was playing Freddie Mercury in a crowdpleasing movie. So, there’s that. (C) Even if Benedict wins BAFTA, I firmly think it’s Smith’s Oscar because King Richard is strong, Smith is overdue and because imo GG+CC+SAG>>>BAFTA alone. (D) You won’t be disappointed (I guess) because I think BAFTA is more likely to go to Cumberbatch. I suggest you choose what you have the gut feel about.
I actually mean that Smith is Malek. Bale is Cumberbatch, the high profile British nominee who’s consistently been second in the race and even then he actually won GG and CCA. Malek was American and won following the SAG win aka Smith. My point is that Smith can win BAFTA over Cumberbatch the way Malek won over Bale.March 7, 2022 at 1:28 am #1204834432
At this point I don’t think Benedict will win BAFTA, but Malek is a bad comparison because he was playing Freddie fucking Mercury.
It might be worth noting though that KR doesn’t have Film at BAFTA. Malek is the only one in the last 12 years to have won without Film.
I agree though that I’m really hesitant to predict Benedict which is a real shame because I think he deserves one major award for this role imo.March 7, 2022 at 1:18 am #1204834418
Okay so three questions:
How many of y’all are predicting Benedict to win BAFTA?
If you are predicting Benedict to win BAFTA, how do you know this won’t be a Rami Malek/Christian Bale situation where Malek won over Bale?
If Benedict wins BAFTA, what then?
And lastly, will I be disappointed if I predict Benedict for BAFTA? Other than Hopkins, most SAG/BAFTA splits had the Globe. Benedict doesn’t have that.March 5, 2022 at 3:59 am #1204832200
People predicting Benedict to win CCA are way off imo
The CCA does predicts. They only award the critics pick when the critics pick is also the frontrunner. Whenever the frontrunner has not been the critics pick, they’ve always awarded the frontrunner: McConaughey over Ejiofor, Pheonix over Driver, Bale over Hawke.
Smith will win CCA but if Cumberbatch can win BAFTA like people are predicting him to, the momentum should still balance out.
I will say though, that if Kodi wins BAFTA, he’s taking the Oscar over Troy even if (when) Troy wins CCA.
In the event that both Kodi and Cumberbatch win BAFTA, atleast one of them will take the Oscar imo.Not now
