markwahlbird replied to the topic Who will be this year's "out of nowhere" nominees? in the forum Movies 1 month, 2 weeks ago
The Painted Bird in International Film (and maybe Cinematography, in an even longer shot)
Aside from Actor in a Comedy, Supporting Actor, and Foreign Language (all 5/5) and Actress in a Comedy (3 for 5, with Dever/Wu over Blanchett/Feldstein), I got a pretty solid 4/5 across the board. I had:
- Little Women over Two Popes
- De Niro over Bale
- Nyong’o over Erivo
- Hustlers over Dolemite Is My Name
- Johansson over Bening
Not since the 2nd Academy Awards has there been a Best Director winner not nominated for Best Picture. This will likely never happen again, but what do you think are the closest times this has come to happening in the past? I think there are a few cases that can be made for some coming in third place or even second (not including occasions such as…[Read more]

This is an exercise I’ve spent a lot of free time contemplating, if my long and pre-prepared response didn’t give that away already.
- Almost Famous
- Billy Elliot
- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
- Erin Brockovich
- Wonder Boys
- A Beautiful Mind
- Black Hawk Down

Fonda wasn’t an acting nominee for 12 Angry Men, just producing. He actually would have the widest gap solely between acting nominations: 41 years between The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and On Golden Pond (1981)
Just wrote up some veeery long and very rough lists for the acting categories, gonna put them here.
NOTE: Some of these might not end up being 2020 releases, and there might even be some on here that are already confirmed as later releases and I just missed that. Anyway, here they are!
– Daniel Kaluuya, Jesus Was My Homeboy
– Bill…[Read more]
markwahlbird replied to the topic Where did Robert De Niro place in his nominations? in the forum Movies 3 months, 1 week ago
1990 I actually think he was either 3rd or 4th – Costner was 2nd, and 3/4 was probably a very close race between De Niro and Depardieu, who was playing a larger than life, very capital-a Acting role (which had already won another actor the Oscar forty years prior) as well as being in Green Card, which won him the Globe for Comedy, that same year.

Got to see an early screening of Clemency and there was an original song that played over the credits that was pretty good… don’t remember the title though, and haven’t been able to find it anywhere online

Dafoe/Viggo was tough for me to pick, but even though Dafoe is easily the better performance, I doubt enough people saw it to vote him over Viggo. See previous comments for Redmayne. Eastwood I think was 5th because people wanting to reward him could easily vote for him in Director, and while I could see arguments being made for Depp or Cheadle,…[Read more]
